Very enjoyable game to watch but we came up short.

Game’s key moment is at 44:45.

Very poor from Adam at Kuhn’s goal. Nicolas’ slightly longer second touch opened up the space for the shot.
Adam knew the shot was coming and when. He went too early. Timing !

No doubt we were up against a very good team. We did not disgrace ourselves by any means.
However, I do not think we optimised our strengths. We seemed more concerned about cancellng the Germans strengths.
We let them play the ball about without pressing and harrasing them. High energy tactics, I know but they closed us down when we played the ball out from the back. We let them slow the tempo down and defuse the atmosphere
They looked rattled when we played Maeda through the middle and went for them. That is our game and we should have adopted it as much as physically possible.
Bayern were beatable, but we overdone it with the respect.
Their first goal was from poor defending down the left.
Was it avoidable. Definitely.
Their second was from school boy defending a corner. How on earth do you leave a guy who scores every game for Bayern unmarked. Shocking defending.

Respectable result against a top ten club even if we could have done better with a bit of luck. Full moon last night?
Celtic struggled for long periods to get their foot on the ball against a very good Bayern side that should be one of the favourites to win the CL this season ?
We had a ” Goal” disallowed in the 1st minute, and we should have had a Penalty in the 2nd half when Arne Engels was fouled by the Bayern player. On 90 minutes, as Celtic pressurised Bayern I thought my wee ” Prediction” that Celtic’s ALISTAIR JOHNSTON would score a Goal, but the Bayern Goalie saved AJ shot.
I thought that ALISTAIR JOHNSTON and Big KASPER were both excellent, and if only some other Celts had concentrated a wee bit more in defence, we may have got a Draw outta the game ?
Having said that, Bayern were certainly excellent in possession for much of the game, although Celtic finally came alive after Daizens goal, and we managed to finally rattle Bayern into making some mistakes.
Overall we can have few complaints, and IF we have a wee bit more luck we can put on a good show when we travel to Munich ?

WGS tactics were not to everyone’s taste but he did achieve our best results v top tier teams in Europe.
We beat teams with bigger budgets and more resources back then by doing as Brendan sought to last night. By recognising that no one wins going ‘toe to toe’ vs an opponent with superior resources for 98 minutes. By trying to limit the game to a period of 15-20 minutes when we take a few risks and ‘change it up’ then we may have a punchers chance.
We did it vs Man U and Shakhtar and Milan. We came close to getting a result last night. Closer than Brest or Sporting despite being against superior opponents. Closer than we did v PSG etc.
Maybe Maeda through the middle would have been a better starting option as he could have challenged them more but could / would Jota have put in the same defensive shift Maeda didn’t on their right flank ?
Overall it’s a real mixed bag of emotions for me today. We don’t even get a prized co efficient points from what was a good mature performance. We are still in the tie just as Man City and Monaco and Milan and Atalanta are. Bringing 2-1 lead at home is a weird one to play out. It’s like you have already won, or can only lose the tie. If you are Bayern do you stick or twist ? We still have a punchers chance.
bournesouprecipe on
Was it a bird, was it a plane were they just Supermen.
Celtic played well against £50M players but price tags talk and are part of the package, it showed over 97 minutes, if you thought Celtic had a chance in this tie, it probably died with five seconds left of the first half. Surprisingly, thought they sat off at 2-0 and let us come into the game, their arrogance could have been costly, they were good but aren’t the best ever Bayern side of the modern era.
No failures from what we have as a squad so far, however when Bayern needed to score they did, either side of half time is almost always a killer. Celtic were great as were the support, in the last 25 minutes and we missed that little un-Celtic like luck we cannot get, even for once VAR wasn’t enough for the Spanish referree, who seemed too often, to give the benefit of any doubt to Bayern.
If you didn’t know £2M Greg Taylor might come off worst in a ricochet with £50M Michael Olise, or that £80M Harry Kane might move zones and elude his marker, was it AJ ?, congrats you are a super Celtic optimist. Taylor ( the wee guy ) regularly a Liam Mc Grandles plays an inverted role in a way that Kieran or Jeff Schlupp, definitely won’t. Another maligned ‘escaped goat’ Yang truly was a sub with impact, Reo Hatate had a typical twisting turning time in midfield and Arne Engels and Nicolas Kuhn weren’t phased by any former Bundesliga mates.
Daizen Maeda now “ the best presser in the world ” scored on cue and pestered Bayern non stop. Shout out to Celtic legislators for being on top of the red card rules, nobody mentioned appeal till it was won. Any repeat of the Parkhead first half in Munich will quickly close the book on this season’s clear Euro improvement, an early away goal that stood would help our cause. Back to more mundane tasks, and three points towards next years lessons learned tilt. If continuity at Celtic is achieved, the months of planning for CL qualification, should already have started and be concluded when the short window closes with players like CEO’s already in the building.
Brendan Rodgers sides lack a ‘physicality’ whether it’s Dens Park or the CL, maybe that’s why it’s his favourite word. If that was us being ‘pragmatic’ in the first half ( I doubt it was ) more outclassed, I preferred the Celtic of the last 30 mins. No pragmatism sometimes at this level in Birmingham, Dortmund, or Munich there are better players that Celtic can only aspire to. It wasn’t a battle of tactics or managers, it’s all about players and a competitive Celtic, which we certainly saw.
MOM Daizen Maeda.

Before I read back I just wanted to give my thoughts on the match last night, which, as BR often says and is often the case against better teams, we had to “suffer” for long spells.
Atmosphere started well, ramped up with our first ‘goal’ then slowly declined as Bayern took almost total control of the match and we looked timid and at times were unable to do the basics right (simple passes, balls up the line going out) and looked reluctant to press. Credit to BM – they are a quality team and they work hard. The team worked their asses off and nearly made it to half time with a respectable 0-0 result, and could have even been 1-0 but for Idah’s knee.
I am not fooled by the last 15 or 20 minutes. Whilst (other than Yang who was a pleasant surprise after his poor first contribution) the line up looked more like what I had hoped for (Schlupp and Jota on the wing, Maeda central) it did appear that BM took their foot off the gas and tried to manage the game with a big game coming up at the weekend for them. After a short spell, they did manage it well again. Had we started with that line up I am not sure we would have fared much better; Maeda can only do so much and Jota can’t control balls on the line which are being constantly played out carelessly.
We’ve seen often enough SPFL teams come back into games when we ease off towards the end of games, this felt much the same.
Despite the above, still proud of the work rate, togetherness and mental strength of the team; it could have been a lot worse. I also think we should have had a penalty (foul anywhere else) AND I think that Bayern should NOT have had the corner to score from. Even ignoring the fact that the initial corner was a goal kick, the strangest thing for me was the ref blowing for a foul with the ball in play and caught by Kasper (after Trusty was fouled?) – yet he proceeds to give BM another corner?! Ref was honking throughout.
The second leg will be tough and will require the team to suffer for even longer spells I feel but at least the tie is alive, even if it seems a mission highly improbable if not impossible.
DeniaBhoy on
Burnley78 – good post but I think sometimes we also have to factor in luck when looking at past results. Sometimes we batter teams and the ball just won’t go in. The other team may have set themselves up in a low block and defended for their lives but the post, the bar, an inexplicable miss in front of goal etc. can mean you leave the game with no points. Barcelona battered us at Parkhead but didn’t get the result their dominance merited. It happens in football as we know.
Last night we defended well and were within a couple of seconds of going in at HT 0-0. For all their possession and good play, Kasper did not have much to do. Brendan then would have had the chance to tweak the set up before the calamity of the second goal.
BR said post match it was only once he made the changes did we start to play as he wanted – on the front foot and more aggressively. Which begs the question, did we not play like that in the first 45 mins because Bayern didn’t let us or was it because the players picked couldn’t do it? (a bit of both is my guess).
Once Maeda was switched to the middle, he terrorised their keeper into making a couple of mistakes that could have seen us back in the game. Idah is not capable of that kind of pressing. Maeda, we are discovering late in the day, is a much better forward than winger. And Jota is a much better winger than Maeda. His crosses more dangerous, his dribbling and control at another level. But Jota is probably not in the door long enough to demand a start and Idah delivered big time at Villa. To leave him out would have been harsh.
I think Brendan probably got his tactics right last night, but the team that began the game were not delivering the aggressive press he wanted them too.
Would the result have been any different? Probably not. Bayern, I imagine, could have stepped up their game if they had needed to.
I imagine Bayern will run out comfortable winners now, probably by adding another 3 or 4 goals over there. But, back to where I started, sometimes luck intervenes. They might rest players, we might play the game of our season. Stranger things have happened.
Off now for a ride in the sun, cheers.

“Bringing 2-1 lead at home is a weird one to play out. It’s like you have already won, or can only lose the tie. If you are Bayern do you stick or twist ? We still have a punchers chance.”
This casts my mind back to 3-1 away to Ajax followed by 1-0 defeat at home. The difference being we were still learning at that level and the gap between the teams was not as pronounced.
I’d love to think Bayern will be in two minds; I just don’t see it. After losing out last year they seem to be re-focussed this season and have a professionalism, focus and work ethic to go with their superior talent.
Still, hope in our hearts, stranger things have happened but I will definitely be watching in the room with the big sofa that night I think.

The morning after the night b4….as I sed to my mate, before the game, that our Atalanta and Leipzig performances show that we can compete…am not despondent
