We have a very experienced defensive midfielder

( Mccarthy)sitting on the bench every week and Ange won’t play him.

    I wonder why that is.”

Because Ange does not rate him ?

  2. RobertTressell – A minority of two on Starfelt’s passing, also Carter-Vickers though I wouldn’t specifically blame him for the poor long passing. He isn’t a natural long passer, yet as the game progressed and it became clear we weren’t getting any success with the short pass I feel he increasingly felt, as the guy on the ball, it was falling to him to try something else.

Starfelt carried the ball forward well and played some accurate and quite insightful mid-range balls, something he does fairly regularly. For the first goal he seemed to get a lot of the blame simply because he was _there_, which is a recurring theme. The players who aren’t there (and should be) often seem to get away without scrutiny. This was an aspect I often noticed (and still do) in the much loved Van Dijk’s game, he’s often conveniently elsewhere when things go wrong. Football sacrilege, I know.

Why won’t AP play JMcC …

Word salad of reasons — DD inspired purchase / fitness is questionable / attitude is suspect / retirement gig so he can build a house locally / limited end product when he does play / the slow motion look at me passing / lack of energy + stamina.

I had high hopes but he would appear to be SD Mk2 — came up thinking it would be all too easy.

CS is improving the “playing the ball out from the back” side of his game.

Unfortunately the defensive side of his game fell of a cliff.

Plus the good forward stuff was a minority of his passing efforts.

It was far too much side to side with CCV and then his hot potato act of sending hospital passes to GT — to the point that GT started to hide so that he couldn’t make the pass forcing him to advance forward himself with the ball ….

    Not good.

  5. Mccarthy sitting on the bench every week and Ange won’t play him.

    I wonder why that is.”

MM has most of the answers in that grab-bag of options.

The latter is the most seeable; Ange aspires us to be a fit, fast-moving and readily interchangeable team.

Limited viewings of the wrong ex_Palace Macca, reveals that milk turns quicker.

Either the result of Desmond playing fitba manager or Dom playing Billy BigBaws with long contract offers.

Re last nite; I still don’t think we were (variously described) a car crash, shambles, etc….

We started brightly and were surprised that didn’t wow our opponents, who simply did it back to us.

The team talk at halftime was useless cos we came out more nervy and timid than ever and had the jittery.

At 2-1 I was sure we’d sneak a draw, then we switch off and get done.

    Simples, but no shambles.

  6. Thing that stood out to me with Bodo was they were a tall athletic team. Seemed to be bigger everywhere. They won a good percent of tackles and 50/50’s. Decent footballers very well prepared -coached. We were a bit unlucky but its a lesson to learn from . Onwards to the next must-win game.

  7. MadMitch – specifically which defensive actions did Carl Starfelt fail in last night?

First goal? He was last man covering two players. His fault? Where was the LB or midfield cover? If a CB is exposed 2 on 1, someone else has failed, not the CB.

Second goal? Ball lost in their half. Greg gets absolutely skinned and a ball played across goal at pace. Finisher is coming in from the right hand side. How is starfelt to blame?

Third goal? Another break, no midfield tracker on the goal scorer. Gets a shot off. On another night it misses CCV and Hart saves or it hits CCV anywhere else and the ball is cleared.

They had one other chance of note in the first half. That came down our right hand side. Carl’s fault?

If you have examples of where his defending ‘fell off a cliff’ last night I missed them but I’ll gladly defer if you can cite any. (I do have some work to do so apologies if I am slow to respond but I will look in later)

  8. Obviously signing better players should make us a better team, but last night it was the tactics/formation that did us.

We regularly only had Hart, CCV, CS, CM in defence as the rest, including the full backs pushed forward.

All it took was for Bodo to rob Rogic of the ball and they were in.

  9. Sonsoferin- I think it is something to do with confirmation bias. It’s one of the good things about the data collectors, although I think that has its limitations. I’ll be interested to see the defensive stats and passing stats for each of our CBs. I think CCV is immense and love him as a defender, my defence of Carl is no criticism of Cameron. But they don’t seem to get judged to the same standard.

He was a Desmond signing who should never have been anywhere near Celtic. We had our chance when he was 18 and didn’t take it, when was the last time we took a senior player from that league that was a success?

  11. RT @ 11.10

Don’t have time to list them but he looked very unsettled throughout the game.

He has made progress in the SPL but that progress was lost last night.

The whole defence was 20% off it last night.

For JJ that means he can still offer something.

For CCV that means he can still do the basics.

For CS it means that he is floundering at regular intervals.

For GT it means that he is worse than a man down.

Hopefully lessons are learned — AP / squad / Board.

  12. Come on Celtic get the finger out and upgrade Barrowfield so as I can pay and watch the Ghirls football Team there,I will not give Airdrie one dim ,and why do we have to play in the Penny Car Stadium.

  13. A reality check. One or two getting caught up in their own press including Ange. Too many interviews lately by the gaffer.

Bodo pressed us in numbers early and got their reward. We were knocked off our stride and they got through our press too easily. We did not work hard enough or press in coordinated numbers. We dominated the second half but conceded 2 calamitous goals.

We need to regroup quickly and get back to basics.

  14. Given our finances the Jan window is starting to look a bit limited / self indulgent.

We get in a full rota of JLeague prospects plus we get in another AM — all good.

However we don’t bring in another quality defender when one is badly needed.

CJ looks well of the pace physically and mentally — playing well within his abilities when he did make the field — so that angle would appear to be closed to us and we are both very limited and have very little quality cover.

I wonder how our LU escapee would have performed last night?

    Scapegoat if playing for us.

    Standout if playing for them?

  15. I take Ange never sanctioned the signing of Mccarthy.

On the 2 centre halfs passing out from the back.

Starfelt played 2 decent passes first half and can’t remember anything of note in the second.

As for CCV. In the first half Abada was screaming for the ball to be played in front of him. But CCV was reluctant to play the pass.

    Joe Hart this Summer

  17. Scott Brown (age 36) this season – 32 games and 2 goals

    James McCarthy (age 31) – 8 games 0 goals

someone on here may a big play at the start of the season that James would have more games than Scott would.

  18. Does anyone know if there are there comparative stats available for the rate of goals resulting from corners?

Are some teams significantly better at corners than others and if so is that as a result of coaching, tactics, standard of player, purposeful practice, discipline or is it all just random chance?

  19. park the bus ala MON on

If St Mirren, Livi, DundeeUtd, and most of our Europa league opponents can suss out and nullify AngeBall, then it was likely that Bodo watched these games in Spain, and planned accordingly.

Although, Bodo didn’t park the bus, they were more like, Aberdeen and, Raith Rovers, in Celtic’s face approach and AngeBall didn’t look too clever.

AngeBall has got Celtic into 3rd division European football, and Celtic season ticket holders are raving about AngeBall??

Bodo didn’t park the bus, they merely demonstrated that there is more than one way to rip AngeBall apart, as Aberdeen threatened to do last week, and Raith Rovers made AngeBall look glaikit and entitled last Saturday.

The huns are a different team with Morelos in it, there I said it.

What if McGhee parks the Dundee bus on Sunday, like St Mirren, Livi, DundeeUtd etc? The blonde headed pacey DundeeUtd winger, Finland player, can’t remember his name, I think he would be better for us than Jota, who is now reduced to the McGeady syndrome, when ball went near Aiden, the 2 nearest opposition players would double up on him, nullifying him, and neutralizing 70% of Celtic’s threat, this is now happening to, Jota.

Our two strikers are in the wrong movie, G-Mac and Maeda, despite his goal last night, and what does it say about Celtic supporters who will happily fly the flag of, Kyogo, Hatate, Maeda, Guchi, but not fly the flag of, Abada, Bitton??

    2 faced??

Get real, park the bus, and hit on the break like MON, or suck up PLC puppet managers.

“We controlled the game.” Ange said this last night.??

Bullsh*thing the fans, like Strachan, Lennon, and all executive members.

    There’ll be no change.

Celtic Trust, Green Brigade, CSA, all of them suck, and are toothless, paper tigers.

A run of brutal hun trophy success induced apathy is the only threat to the Celtic executive and their cuddly toy, puppet, bullsh*thing managers.

Maybe in the build up to, and aftermath of, Sundays game v Dundee, McGhee might “use” the media to chuck in a few truth grenades to waken up sleepy dim Tims??

  20. the_huddle

With you all the way. My first comment last night was 6 attacking players against decent teams in Europe?

Sorry, completely wrong formation. The problems being pinned on Taylor are the outcome not the problem.

You can’t leave your defence exposed every time you lose the ball in midfield. The goals were pretty similar and have a horrible echo of previous European failure. There is nothing wrong with playing a bit cagey in the first leg home or away. You cant win in the first leg but you can sure as hell lose it. It will be interesting to see how Ange approaches the second leg.

did you go to the Celtic match last night ?

do you go to celtic away matches ?

do you watch celtic b team matches anywhere ?

do you go support the ladies team at any games away from Pennycars ?

  22. Question – has anyone ever seen us start with a midfield 3 all being left footed ?

I cannot recall having seen this before 🤔

Bodo- massive team, must have had 8 players ( then 3 of the subs) all at 6’4”, all physical and athletic.

Very well organised, coached and knew exactly what they were doing.

The amount of time they had a player drop into the space our midfield was leaving was frightening – look at their number 10 on both the first and 3rd goal.

They closed us down when needed and stood off again defending as a compact set up unit.

When we got close and in their faces, we often won the ball.

Not wanting to call out any specific player,

1 glaring deficiency I noticed, Joe Hart has the ball, looks left with Starfelt retreating towards the byline near the corner flag, their forward follows closing down the pass, strangely Greg Taylor also follows their forward, in behind him, leaving Hart with not option

Taylor should have stayed where he was in space to take the ball

(I also noticed Ange instructing Taylor to move the ball forward wide to Jota, instead he come inside across their forward and passes the ball back)

I stated last week, too often we move the ball backwards, retaining possession, instead of lifting our heads and seeing a forward move, with a player moving into space.

    That I find hugely frustrating

Incidentally – accepting we all want to win the league and gain instant access to Champions league next season. In my view we are nowhere near this level (champions league) and think it would be a painful experience

  23. THE_HUDDLE on 18TH FEBRUARY 2022 11:13 AM

Obviously signing better players should make us a better team, but last night it was the tactics/formation that did us.

Dead on! I think Ange needs to wisen up in Europe. It looks like he never watched the game between Bodo and Roma. or thought they’d be a different team after selling a few of their best players. It looks like he didn’t know they were a big athletic team that played a similar style to Celtic. Why oh why play without a big defensive midfielder? We got beaten and we have to analyse that. We can’t just say it was an off day. If some players are having an off day then best to get them off. But we’re still weak in terms of Europe level performers on the bench. If all we care about is the SPFL then we will remain the same. Remember we used to say “we are a Champions League team (yet)” and then it was “We are not a Europa League team (yet”, nowit’s “we are not a Europa Conference League team (yet)”. And Calmac has said the same thing at each descending level “We can’t be naive at this level”. I love you Ange but you need to wisen up when playing in Europe.

  24. SCEPTICAL CITIZEN on 18TH FEBRUARY 2022 1:29 AM

Ange ball is all that Ange knows.

I remember we used to read all the gushing about his wealth of experience.

Why do you think no team in Europe would employ him, apart from Celtic?

Does Ange know that Celtic are a freak show of a club?

60k crowd, pennies for TV money, a board that throws leagues to keep our bitter rivals viable, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2021, 2022? who knows.

And if you don’t agree to a NDA you won’t get the job?

Is it Celtic, or is it the CIA?

Ange is a puppet get real!
