If the CL table today was the final one then we’d be up against Bayern Munich (I think )

It’s obvious that Valle is an upgrade on Greg Taylor and deserves to make the left back slot his own, with Greg as backup.
Also, Bernardo has earned his place in the midfield for the rest of the season. Engels is still young and can come good, but especially in Europe, Paulo is the man.

I was going to post my take on the game, no need Big Jimmy beat me to it, summed it up for me too
That reminded me of the Bodo game , they were energetic , technical , physical , great shape and confident in themselves (Bodos finishing was better).
In the past it seemed like we lost a second goal soon after letting in the first , last night showed resilience and belief we could get back on level terms .
Last night tempered my expectations of how good I thought we were .
Delighted with the point .
Bread n butter game on Saturday 3 points please .
A pleasure as usual seeing some old faces (pals) pre game ….

Our CL position is 9 places above what would be expected compared to squad values. Some shocking results for some big clubs in this table at this time in the tournament.
The rise of the sun after a big midweek game typically finds me in slightly more reflective mood after the emotional rollercoaster of the night before.
Great point made by Marspapa – we’re not quite as good as we think.
I’m sure many of us (myself included) were thinking of an outside chance of making the top 8.
Would take 3 wins to give us an outside chance.
Possible yes, but highly unlikely.
Bruges physical strength was noticeable last night, particularly at corners, when half a dozen big men lined up against our smaller players.
Easy to see how they could match up against a big, strong Aston Villa team and beat them.

Quite a few positives from last night.
Biggest one which is possibly not being discussed broadly?
We played below par in a Champions League game …. AND DIDN’T LOSE.
To the best of my recollections that has never happened before.
It has more or less been a binary thing.
We don’t play well – we lose.
“Highest level / Fine margins / Unforgiving / You get punished for every mistake” blah blah blah.
Even though it was “only a draw” … last night says something significant about our progression.

Happy Thanksgiving – and we should be giving thanks that we came out of last night with a point.
In recent years it is exactly the type of game that would have seen us beaten and contributed to non-qualification, or, group failure. It was not a good performance typified by CCV’s aberration
In the immediate aftermath of the Dortmund drubbing, draws against Atalanta & Brugge and a win in the Leipzig game might have seemed like ‘pie in the sky’ – it’s now in the history books along with Slovan; so in my opinion we are in a good position to progress and maybe a shade better than expectations (see HRVATSKI JIM @ 9:51).
I believe that a win when we host Young Boys will see us into the play-offs, anything else is a bonus at this stage of our European rehabilitation.
I don’t know what to make of the Zagreb encounter, but have a funny feeling that we could do UEFA Cup-type Blackburn/Liverpool job on Villa.
A nice resounding win on Saturday to station us fourteen ahead of Ibrox and we can look forward to more than Christmas in December. HH

Brendan Rodgers talked after the game of how we failed to press Bruges in the first half. Bruges’ tactics rendered that all but impossible, not with the Barca influenced crowding of the opponent in possession, but with an older variant of man to man closing down, not just on your opposite number, but on the likely recipient of the next pass. Very effective and put us on the back foot, from which it was very difficult to play to our attacking strengths, leaving our forward three with little time and space when they actually got on the ball. And it was not only our midfield who were pressured into poor decision making it was also our wide players, Taylor, Johnson having to run with the ball towards our goal line. As in Kuhn careering in the wrong direction, and passing to CCV when Kasper had positioned himself for the passback. In short we buckled.
Never realised that this was the first time we had ever played each other, no prizes for guessing which Coach had done his homework.

Noticeable lack of energy last night.
This can happen given the intensity of the schedule and the intensity of the games in that schedule.
Respectfully, the
“they are professional athletes, they should be able to play twice a week comfortably. See when I was young …..”
brigade are wide of the mark.
An issue that affliction all clubs.
Needs managed (and am sure it will be).
For me we’ve got three huge games in the next month.
– Aberdeen away
– League Cup Final
– Diamond Zagreb away
Our best players should be preserved for these.
No offence to Ross County, Hibs, Motherwell and St Johnstone … but the squad should be used in full for the home games against them …
… and the home support needs to patient.

I’m sure BR did his homework fully and diligently.
Sometimes the players on the pitch don’t just measure up on the day. It happens.
Dinamo Zagreb are facing a crisis on and off the pitch ahead of their clash with Celtic – and off-field matters mean travelling Hoops fans could face an away day nightmare in Croatia.
That’s because Borussia Dortmund are protesting to UEFA after fans complained they were strip-searched and MANHANDLED before their game there. The Hoops travel to Croatia next month knowing a win could all-but secure their passage to the knockout stage of the new-look competition. Fans will travel in their numbers as usual but will be wary after Dortmund supporters lashed out at excessive searches before their match, where the Germans romped to a 3-0 win.
And yet, some Dortmund fans STILL managed to produce some PYRO Display as the game was going on ?
Apparently, the Croatian Cops and Security Staff had TENTS erected outside the stadium so they could conduct the strip searches ?

Our midfield was very poor last night , hatati and Engels that’s about the worst performance from them this season ,and to be honest Callum wasn’t a whole lot better . But we managed a point keeps us in the running . CCV a bit careless with his back pass but it was very unusual from him , he has stuck out for us on many many occasions . Don’t know about you on this site but after the RB Performance I expected more of the same , not to be , but we’re Still in with a chance of qualifying .

Ah the ol’ throw the players under the bus treatment.
We got another reality check last night that CL ties are challenges still.
It disappoints us that a home game v Bruges was one where we had a right to hope for 3 points, but in the end recognise we deserved no more than 1.
The reality is that we could lose all three of our remaining ties or we could win all 3. It all depends on which version of Celtic turns up and which version of Zagreb, Young Boys and Villa show up.
All the factors that make it a game by game calculation:-
Injuries & Suspensions
Form coming into the game
Form on the night
Adherence to Manager’s Instructions
Concentration, Bravery on the ball & Stamina/fitness
This rollercoaster will continue- I’m glad to be in the competition and giving of our best in 3 of the 5 ties so far.
One wee light-hearted thought amongst the disappointment was a tweet I noticed about Cameron Carter Vickers own goal- some wag said – “Dessers would have missed that!”
bournesouprecipe on
Great point for Celtic, previous sides would have crumbled after a bizarre own goal and the way Brugge were dominating. A first half that went the same way as it did at Tynecastle, apart from the opponents, who are obviously a much better side than we face domestically.
Don’t know why BR switched widemen and we didn’t settle from the K.O. but were better with Daizen Maeda restored to the left and Nicolas Kuhn to the right after 15 or so minutes. It was the Brugge tactics that caused an uncharacteristic panic pass from CCV. Celtic miss an often wise row Z clearance backwards and sideways finally caught us, against quality European ‘high pressers’.
The midfield three and inverts were getting the run around, almost every player stuttered, on to half time. CalMac couldn’t get it going with the ball, Arne Engels doesn’t hold it much, and Hatate’s movement gets him a game, that is often punctuated with the sublime verging on ridiculous. Greg Taylor was caught, more than once on his flank where he hadn’t returned in time from aborted forays on the left. Especially with their diagonals, Brugge passing made it look like they had an extra man, in the first half.
Brendan’s team talk and tweaks upped the performance level and Daizen Maeda’s supreme finish was the highlight of the night, possibly in the Champions League, not just Parkhead. Nicolas Kuhn was again superb, and although he’d been homeworked by Brugge, he was still able to wriggle free more than once. Kyogo was bright and barely got a sniff never mind a break in the box, when the changes came right on cue, it was surely way too soon for Maeda? and maybe a bit too late for Hatate?
Alex Valle had another good showing, and he’ll push Greg all season hopefully with a signature from both, at the end of the race. Kasper Schmeichel was immense with his feet and his hands, saving a certain goal with a finger tip round the post, late on. A goal and a half each against the Belgian Champions was a point won in the new league format, we enjoy.
Not Rod Stewart just Ross County giddy up next in Parkhead what an anticlimax that is for a support enjoying the second Brendan voyage and Paulo Bernardo’s inevitable starting slot on real turf, nothing virtual.
