  1. Good morning from an overcast North Staffs.

Very happy after yesterday’s results – followed the game here whilst watching Vale live.

Vale now joint top of the league – who’d have thought that after our 7 goal drubbing on game 1.

    Not getting carried away.

Roll on Tuesday when I’ll be at vale park but will have most of my attention on Rotterdam

The best news of the week is having Jackie home.

  2. Result was what we wanted and needed and we grew into the game 2nd half. Was looking a repeat of StJ up until the 1st and shows how important it is to get that goal early. We had a good habit of starting on fire last few seasons and more often than not got the goal that changes the pattern of the game – need to relight that fire as we started too slowly yesterday and StJ – sure we were in control and had all the ball but not in areas to hurt them and not turning them and not fizzing things across the box at every opportunity. From minute one opposition should be under pressure – we will get through or they will make an error but it has to be fast not giving them time to settle into ultra negative game plan. We spend to much time at the beginning of the game passing along the back and to and fro MF to defenders – I know it’s not easy against low block tactics but we have to learn it as everyone plays the same tactic

  3. Morninv Celts

  4. bournesouprecipe on

Parkhead or Spain, it’s all the same.

Watching Celtic win with a sinking sun and a 30 degree poolside view, makes relaxing easier, at least till Tuesday. Choosing CB’s at very short notice from Premier League games to Champions League isn’t easy.

Midfield and up top at Celtic just now, is much more predictable, but something pragmatic must be on the cards, – shirley? BR needs to pick a side to throw old foes Feyenoord a googly, according to SMSM just like the trip to the fenianless bigot dome Celtic shouldn’t bother turning up. Whether it’s tactical or vintage Celtic, this is one very hard game and a rigid thinking would mean we need to produce our a game.

Dundee was a very similar game to the St Johnstone home draw, except of course the scoreline, and Brendan Rodgers tweakery continues. Thought Liam Scales did well again, not severely tested though, just like Nat Phillips. The key might yet be Gus Lagerbielke whose excellent second forty five minutes might mean, a three, which BR played at Leicester in their happier times. Then again maybe not he could go for it and get hit for six like we did in Barca.

Justification in perseverance with vastly improved Daizen Maeda Joe Hart and Matt O’Riley saw a side that finished, arguably better than the first eleven pick? The talks with Reo Hatate should be swift, and fruitful.

    MOM Daizen Maeda

  5. Dear Cqn,

This week(Thurs) sees an important anniversary of serving the church(60 years) for Monsignor Charlie Kavanagh((Good poster CONNAIRE here)

A mass to celebrate this event is taking place at St Mary’s Greenock 7pm with refreshments and food afterwards

Those of us who were lucky enough to be in Lisbon in 2017 will recall the celebtation of mass at the Basilica,Celebrated by Monsignor Cavanagh

    All welcome

    Hail Hail

  6. On Tuesday, I would play Maeda and Kyogo up front and drop Yang. Play Hatate from the start and bolster midfield by also playing Holm who can give Calmac a lot of defensive help and allow him to push forward more.

Won’t happen though. Brendan said before yesterday he already knew his team for Tuesday and it would be a matter of deciding who to give minutes to yesterday. So it looks to me like it will be the same team with a decision to be made on starting HAtate or DT, Phillips or Lagerbielke.

In which case I would go with Reo and Lagerbielke (Phillips is not match fit).

  7. Good morning all from a very cloudy Bishopbriggs (out for Breakkie).

A good day at the office yesterday and Scales done well, credit where crefit is due.

The best news of the week is having Jackie home.

You take care of Jackie, you know it makes sense.

  9. Back on August 5th, DT won MOTM in the 4-2 win over Ross County. In the post-match interview, MoR suggested that DT was far too good a footballer to be left on the bench and that he was not given enough of a chance( by Ange). DT also indicated that BR knew how to improve his game. The bromance looked strong between the two and they have started together every week since (I think).

Fast forward a few weeks, and it is fair to say DT has been given plenty of chances and has not done an awful lot with them. I think that was partly due to the possibility that Reo would leave and then by the fact that Reo was injured when he came on for DT at Pittodrie.

I am not making him out as a scapegoat. He is a good SPFL-level player but his game is not at the level we need. I don’t think we will see much of him in the starting line up over the next few weeks.

  10. I think David Turnbull is a valuable squad member. Not starting but one of the few midfield players that we have who will have a shot from outside the box. In tight games, he may come on and help us to break down a deep-lying defence, which, of course, is the total norm at Celtic Park v SPFL teams, apart from one or two, por cierto

  11. Our team is too fast of feet and mind for the bull I am afraid.

By the time he has received the ball he gives it straight back as the opposition are already on him, 5 yrs ago he would be a stand out but the game is too fast for him now.

Great Pen, nice and simple. Power and we were all happy for him and us. Much like Broonie towards the end, play breaks down because of his speed of thought unfortunately. I think Brendan is doubling down with playing the bull over Holm, Reo, iwatta and now Bernardo.

No harm to David at all, good honest pro.

Taylor and Joe continued to look more settled and no harm to Nat but I think the pace of the game got to him early doors, he took a shy in front of us in the first couple of mins and looked shattered already, his passing was tired after that. Trying too hard? Who knows. Thought Lagerbielke settled the whole team down. Solid display, won everything and what can you say about Liam? Great game again, quietly goes about his business.

Good to have Reo back and Palma looked good, direct, Yang was also excellent, pace and power in abundance but slight optional Paralysis with final ball once he’s created space for himself. He’s young though.

Hat tipped to the recruitment team, no one has look out their depth at all. All stepped up and been good additions, Bernardo, Kwon and Tillio we will have to wait and see.

    Happy Sunday.csc

    KLV

  12. PoR Cierto – Ange used him that way for sure. My point is he has not done enough these past few weeks to command a starting place and if the new signings live up to expectations, he is likely to find his sub appearances dropping off too.

Such is the nature of the game. It could all change again if Reo leaves in January (God forbid).

  13. Result was great yesterday, and 3-0 was a fair reflection on the game, imo.

I thought our performance was similar to the St Johnstone match.

Unlike the poor performance at Killie, I was reasonably pleased with our efforts at home v St Johnstone. 2-0 or 3-0 would have been a fair reflection that day, imo.

Difference between our last 2 home games, imo, was simply putting the ball in the net. We had 75% possession yesterday – 19 shots at goal – 7 shots on target – scored with 3 of them.

Against St Johnston we had 74% possession – 19 shots at goal – 5 shots on target – scoring with none. Though O’Riley could have had a hat trick that day but for good shot-stopping by their keeper (or poor finishing from us, depending on your viewpoint).

Another difference was the attacking subs brought on in each game. I think our bench was stronger yesterday in that respect. Against St Johnstone we brought on Forrest, Haksabanovic and Abada. One is a peripheral squad player, whilst another has been sent out on loan. Their introduction had little effect that day.

Yesterday we brought on Hatate, Palma and Bernardo. Granted, we had already scored the all important opener by then, and it’s early days for assessing the newcomers, but I prefer the look of Palma and Bernardo (compared to Forrest & Haksabanovic).

Still think we are vulnerable defensively. This is a concern when the standard of opposition increases (like in Europe). We have yet to form a settled CH pairing, and our midfield 3 are primarily attacking players. Our midfield are not great defensively and do not protect the back line as much as we’d like. When Calmac (more a number 8, imo) is our most defensively minded midfielder, then we are obviously lacking in that area. We’ve tried signing a better number 6 (Ideguchi, Iwata, Kwon, etc) but none have managed to convince as being better at the holding midfielder role…yet.

BR has some thinking to do for Tuesday re our line up and tactics. I hope, rather than expect, for a positive result 🤞

  15. Regarding DT – I thought he played ok yesterday. Always looking for the ball, and never hiding. Pushed forward more in 2nd half and he literally won us the penalty for the all important opening goal.

In saying that, U fully expect Hatate to be reinstated as starter once he is ready. Once we have all players available I see Turnbull as a backup number 10 (to O’Riley), used from the bench to rest MOR later in games, or potentially start against lower league SPFL opponents; again, to rest one of our better players.

  16. Without knowing the ins and outs of the rugby world cup, as a casual bystander the fixtures are not exactly coming down the line thick and fast? The tournament kicked off on the 8th and Samoa only got their firt game yesterday. Scotland played on Sunday 10th and then have no games until Sunday 24th. Hope they have lots of books to read.

  17. Great result yesterday, good measured performance against a tricky opponent.

The first goal was all important, so we’ll done Big Joe Hart on a great save and David Turnbull on a fine penalty.

See DT is getting “mixed” reviews, it is interesting in his MoTM display at the start of season BR said is he kept it up, he’d be offered a contract extension.

Now that hasn’t been announced so either negos are still ongoes or more likely DT isn’t making the grade.

Hatate back, Holm with plenty of potential, our loanee Bernardo coming with a fine fanfare, we could be seeing a Celtic squad player in his final season.

Calmac had a great game and Matt is pushing on under BR’s guidance, so that aspect of the midfield picks itself at the moment.

The forwards were interesting Meada is a pure torment and Yang, rough diamond for sure but bags of potential – yet the standout was again Kyogo, who is re-writing the Scottish phrase, in the name of the wee man.

It is difficult to select a three for Jobo again this week, the defence still a w.i.p. yet good to see AJ getting his “legs back” in the second half.

Was trying not to go for MO’R this week, yet the lhad is just coming on leaps and bounds and his goal was a clincher – how much progress has he really made!? I’ll let you know Wednesday morning.

So winging it’s way to SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

    1. Calmac

    2. Kyogo

    3. O’Really

    Hail Hail

  18. St Johnstone second penalty shout v Rangers.

Rangers have went a record 60 league games without conceding a penalty, twitter.com/zeshankenzo/st…

  19. DeniaBhoy – due to the attrition, rugby players can’t really play more than once a week.

Added to that, there’s 20 teams in the competion in 4 pools of 5 so 4 sides have no game one week like Scotland for this w/end.

Ireland South Africa on Saturday night should be a humdinger.

  20. RECORD ATTENDANCES IN 2022/23

OVER FIVE MILLION FANS ATTEND SPFL MATCHES ACROSS A SEASON FOR FIRST TIME

Five million supporters have turned out to watch their teams across all SPFL competitions for the first time in the League’s history.

A total of 4,673,847 fans attended games across the cinch Premiership, cinch Championship, cinch League 1 and cinch League 2, including play-off fixtures, in season 2022/23.

Another 413,553 fans passed through the turnstiles across the Viaplay Cup and SPFL Trust Trophy competitions. Those additional crowds mean 5,087,400 fans attended SPFL matches across the season.
