It’s clear it’s sell before buy policy and the clubs cash pile will not be touched.
The net result is that the selling clubs know that Celtic are desperate as they need the player urgently and are cash rich from the sale and cash pile. Hence they play hardball which leads to dragging out deals , players arriving late and no time to assimilate into team dynamics.
The approach to bring in AJ before selling Juranovic was better financially and football wise.
So use the funds available as the buffer to bring in players and top it back up with the sales. A smart CFO will sort the cash flow timing so no FSR rules are breached.
Separately, why the cash pile ? They probably don’t know what to do with it or are just risk adverse as seriously lacking in ambition. Hence the rainy day story.
It’s really amateur hour with no functioning board , execs neutered and not fit for purpose —- all waiting on a call from a shareholder when he feels like it.

Was good to be back but I said a hard watch and 1 nil and it was.
The squad amd first team & coaching team needed major investment and still does.
It is starring us right in the face.
Farcical the way our club is run.
Yo ho ho off we go, who would have thought that of last season’s main protagonists it was only the champions who picked up 3 points in the opening round of fixtures?
Despite the uncomfortable score-line it was a comfortable victory. There’s work to be done for sure, but anyone willing to pay attention and actually listen to the words coming out of the manager’s mouth should be quietly confident.
I was particularly pleased to hear him say pre-match that in playing Duran wide right was playing him out of position. He went on to say if he gets in the players he wants Duran will play off Hoch.
This was pleasing in two aspects – first, after a year of chaos it sounds like there’s a plan and second, it sounds like a change in formation is in the offing – music to my ears. His post-match quip name-checking CCV (many a true thing is said in jest) suggests he recognises the ghost of Brendan Rodgers is still strong in this team. Thankfully the transfer window is still open and hopefully a few out and a few in will allow the team to move forward (literally and metaphorically).

Great three points for Martin and the bhoys, still not quite off to a flier… predictably rusty performance.
Wish I could give the new forwards points but agree with those who say Duran is no winger and we need things a bit sharper from big Kasper… MO’N’s comments on him were interesting.
Thought it was a good tactic Calmac going deep to collect the ball from the keeper – makes sense to me, our best distributor of the ball picking it up there – not seeing it effecting our attacking moves to much yet but he did his Captains role.
KT by far the best player on the pitch, and who was always there to get the winner, well done Benji…

It will be interesting how we prepare for the UCL group stages if we get through – we severely lack the strength and depth for a UCL competition.

I have given up trying to second guess team selections and substitutions. Martin has favourites just like those before him and some players just don’t fit into their plans. Luke before Reo?
Last night JF should have started on the right before wasting Duran there. Give JF or Yang the freedom to play on either wing and play Duran and Hogh through the centre as we used to do in days gone by. If Jota gets back, that should be his role. If the plan is to play two up front, I don’t see much point in blowing 8 million on a right winger when we have two in the building (Yang and JF) and Jota still to come back? All three of them can play left or right and only one will be playing at any given time if we go two up front. (if that is Martin’s intention as stated).

Sentinel Celts Player Of The Year 2026 27 Season
I’m happy to again run my Player Of The Year game by game survey for the 2026 27 season. This is something that is open to all, on a game by game basis, for every competitive match that Celtic play.
There’s no need to sign up, there’s no joining fee, and perhaps best of all – there’s absolutely no need to justify your opinions! Neither is it limited to folk who post or lurk on Sentinel Celts. So, friends, family, neighbours, window cleaners, absolutely anyone can join in.
Many of you reading this will already know what’s involved. But for anyone who doesn’t, or for anyone thinking that they can’t join in cos they don’t actually post on here then here’s a quick reminder of how the thing works.
1. After the final whistle for every competitive game, the voting lines are open and remain open until 9.00pm (Celtic Park Time) on the following day. Votes should be sent to me at sencelpoty@gmail.com
2. Anyone and everyone is entitled to email me their own opinion on which 3 Celtic players stood out. Importantly, you do NOT have to put the 3 names in any order – your 3 nominations will all get 1 vote registered.
3. If you have watched the game in company, whether at Celtic Park, in the pub, at home etc then by all means gather together the opinions from your family, friends or whatever and include these all in the one email. For example this is done regularly by someone on these pages who sends an email along the lines of “… my 3 picks are…, my son’s 3 are….. “ etc etc.
4. And as the season progresses there’s no obligation to vote after every single game. And new voters are welcome at any time, right up until the last game of the season.
5. And that’s basically all you have to do!
6. After every game, I total up all of the votes sent in. I put the players names in order from highest to lowest number of votes and then I allocate POINTS. The player receiving the most votes gets 25 points. Those players finishing 2nd to 5th in the voting receive 22, 19, 16 and 14 points respectively. The remaining players (6th best right down to 16th, if 5 subs have come on) get 13, 12, 11 points, etc etc. And even the unused subs each get 1 point. As the season goes on, these points are accumulated to show how each player is being viewed over the whole season.
7. The results are published in 2 places. First, on the Sentinel Celts website. And second, I also email the results out personally to anyone who has asked for that extra option (around 40 folk opted for this last season).
8. Finally, I’m going to continue to try, with your help, to benefit the Sentinel Celts nominated charity. For every game that sees 100 or more voters I’ll donate at least £3 to the charity. I’m just waiting on the nominated charity being announced. Last season those donations totalled £107.
And I’ll end with a promise! Everyone who votes has my assurance that their opinions are kept secret, their names are not divulged, their email addresses are not shared and all emails are only kept for a couple of weeks before then being deleted.

About two weeks ago Romano said we’d agreed personal terms with Baur.
This deal sums up everything wrong with our approach to transfers.
I can’t comment on the individual deal but we clearly identified midfield as a priority and tried to bring someone in two weeks ago.
We’re no further along. If Baur was too pricey, we should have moved on and secured a midfielder, in weeks before the big playoff.
We seem contend to sit idle and play chicken which is frankly bizarre given the money on offer from the CL.

We got 3 points and that is a big positive. It was the first game so we can cut a bit of slack.
However it was not a good or entertaining game to watch.
I must be honest here, at times I thought Dundee played some decent football considering they have changed virtually a full team.
Again if I’m being honest some observations about last night.
A wet Monday night to raise the flag is an insult to all connected with Celtic We move on but we should not forget the insult.
Loads of empty seats, especially round the area the Bhoys formally frequented. Possibly fans could not make it for a variety of reasons or we couldn’t sell all the tickets.
Substantial queues at the JS turnstiles as some tickets didn’t appear to activate.
Our pre match organised pyro was decent however our infrastructure including the stairwell and passageways etc looked tired. Non slip coating pealing and paintwork universally flaking.
At halftime a tenner for a burger with a fancy name, but never mind no hot water in the toilets there was no hot water for a coffee.
And could not get a connection to pay with phone.
The concourse looked dirty especially around the condiment areas where the windows were absolutely bogging.
Celtic have stated they have carried out maintenance during the close season, perhaps but it was certainly not visible in the upper JS stand.
Very poor imo from Celtic, especially with stated cash reserves in the bank and we could reclaim the VAT back on taxable activity.
Trivial points to many and it won’t affect TV viewers, but it all contributes to the bigger picture.
Anyways, HH, the journey continues.
I read a lot of negativity all of last season and over the summer. Having re-watched our final game v Hearts and then watched and re-watched last night’s game, what struck me is just how categorically better our players are than our SPFL opponents (I won’t presume that in the case of Sevco until I see the final product when the window closes). But with a bit of perspective our players are not just better but in an entirely different class. Yes we will drop points. Playing v 11 behind the ball who hit on the break gives opponents a puncher’s chance. But we should dominate most games. A ball-winning midfielder would be my big ask for the rest of the window, for the more physical away games.
We need to replace anyone who leaves but that apart we have little domestic competition. The problem is raising our game to play European football. But that is going to be a massive step up whoever we bring in. The players are just not used to that kind of test. That’s a structural problem that we can do nothing about despite trying to recruit good players.
Shifting AJ out left after KT went off meant our failure to sign Sarrachi really hit home for me.
Two weeks before a play off we’re playing Yang out left, McCowan is coming on and we’re playing AJ at left back.
Great to see the flag raised last night but disappointed that it was CalMac that did it. This should be an opportunity to give one of our greats a reward for their contribution to the Celtic cause as a player or manager or even to recognise someone in the wider Celltic community.
Even Uncle Tom English, post match conceded that Celtic could have won by three goals or so. In that we created a handful of very good chances for Hogh, Engels, CalMac and Tounetki late on. All positive.
Agree re playing Duran wide right, cant see the logic when Yang was effective there at times last season. Then again saw some good interaction between Hogh and Nygren, the latter getting the season off to a good start with his goal. Need support for KT but we knew that already, good cameo from Donovan got high hopes for him, dovetailed well with Forrest late on. Dundee, as we saw last season can play a bit, and can be effective going forward. Good result to start off with, better performances to come.
I am assuming this was said as humour given Celtic has won 14 leagues in 15 seasons which is the best by a mile ever in our history.
With some of the expert folk on here it’s the kind of thing that might have been said in earnest.
Quite why some of these really smart people are not running a football club or other major concern rather than whinging on a blog I don’t really know.

Yes, Nygren is our best No 10 and despite certain attributes is highly effective.
T’uther day I talked about the inside forwards role – think Durán would excel there – how we get the frontline playing Høgh, Durán, Nygren in the most effective roles is a challenge…
Still think with the players available going back to the 4-2-3-1 might be best…

Its only clear if you ignore it is easier to sell than to buy.
It is clear a lot of players were offloaded and buys took time.
My point is there is no dependency and the cash is there to buy once deals have been negotiated.
The cash in the bank is the result of Celtic not spending on players when they could with no FSR worries.
There is still time to increase the current spend above the £16m spent so far.
At the close of the window we’ll see if Celtic have spent closer to the FSR limit than previously.
Then we can fill the blogosphere with what we think what that makes clear.

More options up front the better as far as I’m concerned. Osmand is another one and, though in a minority here, Jonny Kenny is another. Not sure if he is in Martin & Co plans, guessing he is still injured @ the mo.
Key as always is getting the most out of the players individually and collectively, not sure we did that with Duran last night, despite some promising pre-season games. Early doors of course

Surely You are aware of the concept of a football.blog, with respect I’ll remind you anyway.
It is a vehicle for discussion and interaction amongst participants.. it is not a pre- requisite to run a football club or any other concern for that matter before offering an opinion.
And all honest opinions should be equally valued regardless of personal or employment status.
Personal or employment status should never be used to close discussion down.

There’s a strong tendency to set up teams symmetrically that is persisted with despite the game being asymmetrical – no two players are the mirror image of each other, for example, so why set up a team as if they were?
I thought we handicapped ourselves last night by playing Duran wide right. He did a power of good pressing when Dundee had the ball (he’s very quick), but he was unable to influence the game much when he had it, bar some nice touches and the odd cute pass.
I thought when I saw the line up that he’d be played inside on the left, with Yang wide right. This would have given KT space on the outside where he’s terrific – cf the goal.
On the one occasion that Duran got into the inside left attacking position he showed what I was expecting of him.
If AJ is going, we need a really good replacement. Araujo is not that player, his use of the ball is a league below AJ’s.
Arne played his typical game, some good running and some poor decision making coupled with careless use of the ball. He’s too old to be so persistently half-baked. Take the dough, Celtic.
Sinisalo is not a Celtic-standard keeper, at least at this stage of his career. His use if the ball was dreadful when trying to hit Hogh. I lost count at 5 in the first half of the number of times his longer kick came straight back down our throats. We can’t have that in the SPFL let alone Europe. And his goal tending is below par – he concedes more goals than the attackers’ xG suggests he ought to.
The worry is that MON’s record of goalkeeper signings extends to Rab Douglas, Magnus Hedman and Javier Sanchez Broto, not encouraging when our better teams have had relied on Boruc, Foster, Hart and Schmeichel.
I’d say Thursday is cut off day for closing business in sufficient time to get new players assimilated into the team before LASK. On the evidence of last night, we need some good signings.
And AJ is going nowhere until the LASK tie is completed.

I understood MoN’s decision to give Duran real game time and see how he performed on the wing.
We were a man short first half as a result but Duran tried taking the full back on in second half.
He played a delicious lob pass to set AJ free but his touch in the box to set himself up for a shot or cutback is I hope where he will find himself in future games.

Vote Labour, Vote for Ragers
Glasgow MP Dr Zubir Ahmed has revealed he helped Rangers star Olwethu Makhanya secure a last-minute visa for the Europa League tie against Jagiellonia Bialystok.
The Labour politician posted on his social media account that he was involved in helping the new Ibrox signing land a visa so he can play in Thursday night’s match away in Poland.
Derek McInnes had admitted there were fears over visa issues preventing Makhanya from being involved in the first leg of the third qualifying round match.
Further to comments about the state of the stadium facilities last night.
Whilst I wasn’t there, it has been apparent for some time that the club has scrimped on what would be relatively modest outlays to improve the fan experience.
Simple things like paint and plastering.
The stadium is in need of a major revamp and we wouldn’t even have to use the reported £45m from the sale of a couple of players to do the basics.
Alternatively, that sort of money would go a long way to financing a rebuilt South Stand, whether to marry in with the height and capacity of the other 3 or something short of that but with 21st century facilities, including revenue raising facilities.
Do the board actually sit down and discuss the nuts and bolts of stadium management? Do they know of the ordinary fan experience?
