I agree with the guys talking about Brown. An integral part of the team now, a fine captain, one of those players who’s best and biggest contributions to the side are the ones no-one notices. There really are a lot of self proclaimed football “experts” out there who don’t know the first damn thing about the sport.

Some of the posters on here should stick to what they are good at. Abusing ethnic minorities and spouting right-wing, racist clap-trap, and leave the football to the people who know something about it.

To the Stokesy comment, I never heard it so no idea what Lenny meant, but I don’t think there are signs of trouble in Paradise. We sure ain’t playing like it.

Steve Lomas is right. Rangers fans should be worried sick.

Tom English is a numpty. I don’t care if he doesn’t hate Celtic, he is a Hun.

He is also dead wrong. I do not define my Celtic supporting life by the existence of Rangers. If I did, I would not want to see them gone, gone, gone. I will not miss them if they do. I will not mourn them if they die. I will celebrate it, like the death of Thatcher, like the end of the Tory government.

Do I miss these things? I think, every day, about them. I have blogged on them extensively. Some people say my hatred of Nick Clegg is pathalogical. Will I be concerned when vanishes from history, a mere fart amongst its timeline?

All these things occupy the same space in my mind, in my life, as Rangers. A small space.

Celtic is everything. My love for this club overwhelms everything at times. My good lady knows there are nights she won’t see me, days she won’t hear from me. After defeats she knows when to cheer me up and that there are nights just to leave me alone. She knows the triumphs I have to enjoy with the people around me who experience them the same way … in short, she knows how much of my life it is.

Will our club suffer if Rangers are relegated to the Third Division or die? Only as long as it takes to get us somewhere else, and besides, what does “suffer” mean in context? We would win everything for years to come, even downsizing. Our young players would break into the team. We’d get to see what the fuss is about with the Lennoxtown Conveyer Belt.

And in time, with them gone, Scottish football itself would be healthier and more challenging.

Our club has never been defined by these people. It never will be.

    I understand

I disagree with those who feel no-one should critique Celtic players -as long as they are not being unfair.

my own view of broony is he does well enough in games when we are 5 across the middle

feel we lose something in terms of creativity when he plays in a 4

no doubts about his energy and passion tho’ and the players and management seem to value him highly

  5. First post in a while…..

Thought we were excellent for the most part this afternoon. Utd’s goal came as a bit of a surprise and knocked the players confidence going into the latter stages but we held out for the points despite the obvious lift they got.

Scott Brown my MOTM with Vic and Tom Rogne not far behind him for the honour.

Thought young Matthews had a poor game, certainly his passing and distribution came up short but seemingly he was carrying a virus today which would explain the sudden dip in form.

    Lenny doing a superb job.

  7. I thought Scott Brown was nothing more than average today.

The young DU player with the double barelled name was fit for him today. He out-gallused Broony.

I like SB. He just wasn’t that good today.

Rogne, Mulgrew and Victor should share the motm podium.

The fans were very quick to get on the backs of the players today for some reason.

  8. Another win 3 more points in the bag, loved the first half 2 goals and some great possession play. 2nd half utd pushed further up the park and pressed us back a bit. Their goal was well struck , felt we should have closed rankin down quicker. We never panicked and I thought we were comfortable in the end.

Only criticism is we should have killed them of when on top in first half.

See some discussion on Brown, I thought he played well today I like what he gives us on right hand side.Good to see Izzy start and Kris come on , we will need all our good players over the next few months.

Maybe you might want to reciprocate.

    Then again.

    Maybe not.

  15. James Forrest,

The campaign is gathering steam right now, maybe tens of thousands of Scottish football fans are listening to Traynor and English at this very moment as they inform the country that Scottish football could not survive without our opposites.

You have written brilliantly about how we should address this. MWD also made an excellenct suggestion recently.

Sorry to be so pessimistic and negative but my instinct tells me there will be no relinquishing of titles illegally obtained and perhaps a one off points penalty.

Truly sickened but I sense no appetite in this country to take the recidivists to task in any meaningful way.

I can’t commit any more nervous energy to this. Nevin and Mclean still make me combust internally every time I see them. Neil needs to win this tite because he deserves it and we all need it.

  16. I thought Brown had a good game today and from years past where he was pitched in the middle, he’s a different player.

Granted he won POTY whilst in the middle, but for me, i think he only fit into that position on certain occasions. Benfica 3-0 at Paradise was the best i can remember him playing in the centre, great game

Contrast to where he plays now.

Where he played in the middle, he had the entire field around him and it seemed to make him sort of directionless, using all that energy to cover all the bits of ground, his skillset not being suited to that part of the field and largely just getting in peoples faces and grimacing and giving the ball away and getting booked trying to cover himself and failing.

Now however, he has the right side to himself, he knows what direction to go and brings other players into the game by drawing opponents towards him and freeing up space, which he also often creates himself.

Last season i thought that him and Mark Wilson struck up a good partnership on that side and it was used to great effect in retaining possession and building attacks. I don’t think there’s quite the same link with Matthews (Who i also think is a fine player) but they still work well together.

Scott Brown is no world beater, but he’s a grafter and his technique, to me, really shines out wide. He doesn’t get bullied and when he plays, he claims it as his territory.

I’m glad he’s back in the team. I won’t say we missed him when he was injured (ok maybe a wee bit), cos it started to come together before he fully recovered and James Forrest is bloomin’ fantastic when he’s off and going, but Brown brings something unique. Not entirely sure what it is, but on todays game and since the time he got put out wide, he’s an important member of the team. Of course that is based purely on the way he plays the game, without taking into account the appreciation and respect that the players and gaffers seem to have for him.

A view that’s not shared by some this side of the Kerrydale front door unfortunately

Tough game, good 3 points. Utd were trying to play football until the last 20 minutes when they started to get a bit rougher. WHAT A SHOCK!!!!!!

Not a brilliant second half but at no time did i feel Celtic would fall down and lose. If they had scored again, i’m confident we would have put another away. Coupla good saves from Forster tho

I like SB. He adds something to the midfield that is missed when he’s not there.

I also like him playing on the rhs. In the recent Glasgow derby, I though him and Matthews were terrific.

His passing leaves a lot to be desired a lot of the time though. It was again poor today.

DU down the left today got the better of us.

    It happens.

Our lack of ball retention from the front men didn’t help today.

  19. I think a few comments tonight here on Broonie in particular are disgraceful and do us no favours.

I have rarely seen such vilification ( well, not since Sammi was last playing poorly) and it does not sit well with me.

We won today, we are top of the table having won the last 11 league games in a row and many on here vilify our skipper. He may not be everyone’s idea of a quality player but in my opinion, at least, he leads the team very well and is no mean player.

Time for many to cool down I think and remember this is a Celtic Supporters site.

  20. St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas accused Rangers of acting like “a little club” over their pursuit of Francisco Sandaza.

The Ibrox side have submitted a pre-contract offer for the McDiarmid Park striker, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

However, the Northern Irishman – who saw his side lose 2-1 to the champions – hit out at the conduct of Rangers and owner Craig Whyte.

“I do believe there should be a bit more leadership from the top at Rangers,” he said.

“Ally McCoist has got a difficult job because of the finances and he has had to follow Walter Smith, who is a legend, so he has a tough job.

“But this wouldn’t happen if David Murray was at the club, he wouldn’t let it.

“Rangers are a big club but unfortunately they are behaving like a little one.”

Prior to kick-off, Lomas told BBC Scotland that Rangers had offered Sandaza a two-year contract to move to Ibrox in the summer.

And he is frustrated that Rangers have chosen this approach rather than offering a fee to take Saints’ leading scorer now.

“We haven’t even had an offer,” Lomas added.

Rangers are a big club but unfortunately they are behaving like a little one

    Steve Lomas

    St Johnstone manager

“As a boy, I was a Rangers fan. They are great fans, the Rangers fans, and I’m sure they must be feeling slightly miffed that they can’t go out and pay for Fran Sandaza.

“I would be worried, especially a guy who is in the last months of his contract. I would be extremely worried if I was a Rangers fan.”

Lomas is also unhappy with Sandaza’s agent, Clive Jagger.

He said: “As for his agent, we still haven’t heard if he’s turned our offer down – probably as big an offer as St Johnstone have ever made in their history, which I think is slightly disrespectful to us.

“He’s on the TV saying this and that. No doubt he wants him to go to Rangers because he will be getting something.

  21. In my unimportant opinion, today’s result was one of the most significant results in my long Celtic life.

    Tommy Joad:

It’s simple mate, as you’ve said; a lot of us have talked about it.

If their argument is that Scottish Football needs us both then that is what we specifically take off the table for them, and let them make a choice.

They can apply the rules fairly to Rangers, and let the chips fall where they may. This club is not a team which ran into trouble because of the recession or a bad boardroom decision to invest in Baring Bank shares or some other such thing.

They ran up debts quite deliberately. They defrauded the tax payer. The tax payer, mate, the general public, not football fans, but nurses, doctors, police officers, working men and women. They were caught. They were told to pay. Instead of behaving honourably, they first defused and deflected. They then appealed. Now they seek to find a way which although it might be legal is grossly immoral, in order to duck their responsibilities.

You tell me how anyone can justify allowing such a disgusting action to succeed? You tell me where that leaves our game, when a club can cheat its way to titles on tainted money, be caught and the worst that happens is a minor points deduction that won’t matter.

This is not about hating Rangers. It is about the overall reputation of the game, and if it happens the game is in the gutter and we are well out of it.

The choice must be simple; they can allow this corruption, and have Rangers, tainted with the stink of it, the disgrace of it, forever, all future titles stained and reeking by it ….

    Or ….

They can have Celtic, a club which acted against it’s own interests (yes, if that is their argument, let us hang them with it) for the Greater Good of the Game.

They cannot, they will not, have both.

The End of Rangers will devastate the game. I have no doubt of it. But that need not be a bad thing. If Celtic walked away that too will devastate the game.

At that point it becomes about what foundations you build on. You can either have worm eaten ones, jerry-built, and forever teetering on the brink or you can have strong ones.

And by their choice, let them, all of them, be judged, on the record, now and forever.
