The Battered Bunnet on
Usually for CQN, there’s broad consensus tonight.
General disappointment at a poor result form a promising performance. Like Ajax in September. Like Malmo 1st leg in August. We’re setting the template for a pattern here. There’s a lacking and it requires to be addressed. It doesn’t seem to be getting the attention it deserves.
Young Tierney should be proud of that performance. I’ll bet his folks are. 18 years old and gave neither Nani nor Van Persie a sniff.
Outstanding football for our 2nd goal. Outstanding.
Forrest is starting to show up well.
Brown played well (but gave the ball away that led to the corner, and was the man on the post who wasn’t on the post when he needed to be).
Efe’s was howler of inexplicability, which is a shame really, as he had defended well before his brain freeze. To be fair, the goalkeeper needs to call the play in that situation. Perhaps he did and Efe was absent at the time. Who knows. Inexplicable.
Boyata was sound. Pleased.
Bitton’s lost a little of his earlier form. A little sharpness missing, although he was instrumental in the second goal.
We’re getting nothing out of Johansen. It’s starting to become uncomfortable to watch. If we’re going to play Commons, give him Johansen’s space on the park and put Stefan into special measures.
Teams grow, and teams grow up. This group needs to do the latter pretty quickly. If they do there’s some joy ahead for them. If not. they’re destined to repeat the pattern they’ve laid down in Europe lately, and it’s not a rewarding one.
Assorted talk about how to defend corners and set pieces. Zonal. Man4Man. etc etc. The reality is that there isn’t a prescribed format. Every team uses a mixture of both. There’s only good defending and bad defending. Tonight, as previously, we lost a goal because we defended badly. It seems to me that winning the header isn’t important enough for these players. There’s no aggression, let alone any throat ripping intent. Sort it out bhoys.
The final word: Frustration.

From where I was sat (143 row P) we controlled the 1st half. We were adjusting to Fernandao (sp?) when Efe made his mistake. So on that basis I’d say that Ronny got it tactically correct. Now to me that makes the half time team talk very hard because basically all you can say is “keep it up, no more mistake”. They on the other hand can talk about what to change. They did and it took us a while to get to grips with their changes but we did.
I have to say, after being a bit critical of his decisions at the weekend, that James Forrest was excellent tonight. If he keeps that up he’ll be the next big sell.

“THE GLORIOUS BALANCE SHEET on 1ST OCTOBER 2015 10:14 PM
Are we seeing any palpable signs of progress under Ronny? I don’t think so.
For the seventh time in little over a year we were in complete control of a European match/tie, only to collapse and throw it all away.”
I don’t mean to pick on you but your comment is one I think needs addressed.
Several times I have seen us dominate very good European team for large periods of game. I don’t really remember us doing that in the recent past apart from one or 2 memorable games. I think we are progressing but that by playing a riskier type of football that looks to dominate and win has left us vulnerable at times with the players we have at the moment.
What I have seen is players like Bitton and Griffiths improve dramatically, some very young and inexperienced players getting real European experience and learning, maybe not at the same speed, but growing. I thought Forrest came of age today and took responsibility in covering and helping Tierney whilst still creating various chances including the 2nd goal. I do believe we have left the team short of a main striker as a point of focus for the attacks although Griffiths has been really good. Not perfect and very lightweight but he works his socks off and has a great goalscoring record. I’ve enjoyed seeing the likes of Tierney and Nesbitt coming in and doing well. The same goes for the Rogic revival and the exciting signings like Janko, Armstrong and Jozo.
Brown has been fantastic under Ronny. I think there have been many signs of progress when you look at the players Ronny is working with. I don’t think it’s an easy task he has but I’ve seen enough positive progress to give a lot of leeway for now.
So, yeah, reasonably pleased.

Just in from the game.
A good yet worrying performance.
Similar game to Malmo at home. Controlled the first half, conceded a silly goal then lost the plot for 20 minutes before coming back into it.

Apart from my disappointment at drawing a game we should have won out of the park (we were so bloody good in that first half until Efe intervened), I would like to say that I thought tonight’s game was brilliant with abtremendous atmosphere. The Green Brigade were excellent as were the fans in the Jock Stein Stand. Truly great European glamour game.
Celtic are playing some very inventive, creative, passing football in EL with end product goals. In American football, they have their specialist teams – the players who come on and take kicks etc. What we need is a specialist management team. Let Ronny pick the team. As soon as we go two goals up, send Ronny to the stand and bring on Mr. Defensive manager to see the game out. Job done. Points in the bag.

Secondly, nani apart, I thought fenerbahce were very honest opponents. No cheat in, faint in, div in or time wasting. Not a dirty team, good fans as well.

Lastly, oh how I miss samaras for European match corner kick defensive duties.

I kept a close eye on him tonight, as I think he has been a huge problem in European games in the past. I thought he was garbage and he still does that chase the ball like a headless chicken thing. I think Armstrong is due a chance in the central role, it’s his best position.

I’m not sure that I’d agree with your comment that under Ronny we have dominated several very good European teams. I don’t think we’ve played many very good teams in European terms under his watch for a start ( look at where inter finished in Italy last season), and I can’t remember too many European games in the last year and a bit where we have utterly dominated the game. I’m open to being corrected on that.
I do agree that griffiths and Bitton have improved (leaps and bounds in bitton’s case) but how many other players can we say have regressed (eg stokes mulgrew, Johansen tho this may be temporary) and how many have been signed but haven’t worked out (too many to name in my view).
I genuinely haven’t seen enough of jozo to be excited or not by his signing, it’s wait and see for me. Janko is in the jam tomorrow category though I’ve liked what I’ve seen of him in domestic games, but an improvement on a fit Lustig? Doubtful in my view. Armstrong I do like though it’s not happened for him this season but hopefully he comes back strong from his injury, was good to see him come back late on tonight.

Someone nailed it above. Last season we were outplayed in the EL home games by our opponents. I thought we were lucky to take the points against Astra and to a lesser extent against Zagreb. However, this season we are playing much better football and dominating our opponents. The anger of our fans at not taking all three points tonight and in Amsterdam is a measure of that.
