My dad took me to the home leg. I was only 10 and stood at the front of the enclosure below the stand. It was the biggest crowd I had ever witnessed and I remember the remendous atmosphere.

After what was a hard-fought but narrow victory, the feeling was that Celtic had blown it with a handful of missed chances.

On the morning of 5th March, my dad arrived home from a night shift at the steelworks, woke me up for school and excitedly told me Celtic had won the second-leg 1-0. I remember the joy of realising Celtic were in a European semi-final.

When I arrived home that afternoon, my dad announced that we were going to Celtic Park to welcome the team back from behind the Iron Curtain after their magnificent victory. My mum said we were mad. We got the bus into Parkhead Cross and walked round to the main entrance where a crowd had gathered.

The team bus had already brought the Celtic party back from the airport and were now ensconsed inside the stadium. Eventually, as the crowd grew, it was announced that they would open the gate to the left of the stand, allowing the supporters access to the Celtic End.

There must have been about a thousand supporters massed at the front corner next to the stand as the players and Jimmy McGrory came across to loud cheers. My dad had lifted me on to his shoulders and I remember raising my arms and cheering as our heroes soaked up the applause.

I think my mum was right. We WERE mad. Celtic mad 😁

  3. Wow Tom, what a great experience.

That was a strong period in Slovan B history. They eventually won the CWC in 1969 but they reckon the team of the mid 60s was better.

It showed the potential we had though. We really blew it in the semi final. That was maybe for the best as within a year Jock was at the helm and the rest is history.

What great Celtic times you grew up in. Seeing us go from no hopers to a top feared team. I am guessing 7 years ahead of me. All I really recall from my early days was us winning and going deep in Europe every other year it seemed.

Hopefully a similar result on Wednesday. This will be a level above anything so far this season. Hopefully the team and the manager and the fans are up for it. If so it could be a special season.

A great recollection of family life back in the day.

Not to mention a day* in the life of being a young Celtic supporter in the 1960s

Hopefully we can get a similar result, or better, on a late summer Wednesday night.

Would give us such a boost to get off to a winning start against a team from a great footballing nation with connections to both Celtic and Scotland. Not least Joe Venglos, a coach who also managed future opponents Aston Villa.

    Thanks

I think what we think “should” happen and what is likely to happen are very different

You have the EPL who will want to see the integrity of their exceptionally valuable product maintained. But also will be very careful about tainting that product by suggesting the standard bearer for the league gained all their advantage by cheating

You also have City who can argue that while they might have breached the regs they did it with their own money. Most football fans wouldn’t care when they’ve been able to watch “one of the best club sides ever” win 4 leagues in a row. Fans want to be able to talk about watching Haaland break scoring records, City lets them do that with their own money. We all know they’re bad guys, they’re not doing much wrong surely?

City’s lawyers beat UEFA who have a better resourced legal department than the EPL. They were bang to rights but their expensive legal team exploited some mistakes in the regs. I think with everything the EPL has to lose they will stop short of anything that threatens the image of the league and runs the risk of a very protracte, damaging and expensive legal battle. They’ll impose something harsh in the knowledge it will be appealed and eventually City will end up with something that won’t take away what they won on the pitch and won’t seriously threaten their dominance long term. Cripple us and we’ll take our money to another league.

Wrong of course, but I think this is just the logical outcome of allowing City’s owners into the game and City becoming the dominant club in the league.

  7. I do sometimes think Celtic are a bit of an exception in football. We approach all the rules with a view to being compliant, we dominate our game domestically which is what 99% of fans look for, without cheating anyone, or looking to cheat anyone. We don’t look to destroy the game in Scotland for our own benefit, we don’t have owners who look to take money out of the game.

Our success hasn’t really been at the expense of the game

  8. Re Slovan game in 1964.

Jo Venglos was part of that side but didn’t feature. This was a question I posed a few years ago.Remember listening to the game on the Scottish home service.

  9. Some real howlers this morning.

” Dave King should be the new chairman. We need someone who makes the right decisions,???????,and he has turned it all around before. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

“Igamane looks like a cross between Pele and Messi”

Stupider by the day,and no end in sight.

  10. Hope they dont waste time,go for the BOGOF offer.King as chairman,Gerrraaaard as manager.Let’s humiliate them both, all the while googly eyes is looking for his one last big payday from them.Shady deals afoot. The mob are soooo ripe for the plucking.
