When he first answered the call in October, Celtic were sitting in second place in the table, 8 points behind Hearts having played 9 matches. We had dropped 10 points in the previous 6 matches. The team was in disarray and the club was in crisis.
He left us after beating Dundee on 3rd December. Celtic were sitting level on points with Hearts at the top and with a match in hand. We were 9 points ahead of 3rd placed Motherwell. We had won 5 league matches in succession, stabilised the position in the Europa League and beaten R2ngers to win through to the final of the League Cup.
He got another SOS call on the 4th of January. In the preceding 30 days Celtic, under new management, had lost the League Cup final, lost 4 out of 6 league matches and been beaten by Roma in the Europa League. We were tied in second place with R2ngers in the league, 6 points behind Hearts. The chaos that the club found itself at the end of October was nothing compared to the bombsite that was Celtic in the first week of January.
By the middle of March Celtic were 2 points behind Hearts at the top of the league but a defeat to Dundee Utd at the end of an exhausting schedule of 6 away matches from 7 over 30 days left us 3rd in the league, trailing Hearts by 5 points and R2ngers by 2.
Celtic have won all 6 league matches since, plus a Scottish Cup semi final.
Fast forward to this morning. In the last 4 months Martin O’Neill has hauled the team and the club out of a deep mire of our own making. He qualified the club for the knockout stages of the Europa League, won 13 from 17 league matches – drawing another 2 – and his side beat R2ngers at Ibrox on its way to the Scottish Cup final.
His team sits a single point behind Hearts at the top of the league, the two teams meeting today at Celtic Park on the final day of the season.
His league record since first answering the call for help is Played 22, Won 18, Drawn 2, Lost 2. That’s over 2.5 points per match, equivalent to 96 points over the 38 matches in a season.
It’s perhaps not Ferrari performance, but it’s certainly Porsche-adjacent racing from Honda parts.
Whatever the outcome of today’s match and the season as a whole, we – all of us – owe Martin O’Neill an unpayable debt of thanks, impossible to settle, for pulling us foot by unlikely foot from the rubble he found us in to the place we find ourselves this morning. And for our part, all he asks of us is to roar his team through today’s match. Let’s hear it.
IF Hearts win the title today, I would like the Celtic support to respond in a sporting fashion.
I suppose the chances of that are very small ( very, very !) .

Hot Smoked, I agree. And I’d like to see the players of the title winning team applauded by the runners up, whichever way it lands.

Sadly, I fear I’m asking for the impossible. But let’s win it regardless.

Good Luck Celtic for the last time this season, 3 points please. They have picked a big physical team and will look for Kabore to run in behind , watch him cross in front of his defender to get him sent off. They will also shell the box, be clinical Celtic and lets see where it takes us.
After the debacle of Rodgers/Desmond period (I am still unsure as to all the goings on behind the scenes) followed by the bizarre Inspector Clouseau comedy show, I thought 3rd place was as much as we could aspire to.
Enter St Martin, patron saint of football miracles.
Suddenly we were back in with a chance !
As the results changed, my biggest fear was der Hun getting their grubby hands on £40,000,000 and with our crowd defautling to the biscuit tin method, this could become a genetational disaster.
But, the various Gods indulged us and here we are.
No matter what the outcome we need strong, professional personnel running our club going forward. No more Tisdale type spoofers.
Win or loose, Hearts are not going to be a one season wonder. Lets hope today is not their day. I think home advantage will see us through.

Good luck to the Bhoys today. We always seem to do things the hard way and that’s what I’m expecting this afternoon. It’s fantastic that we’re still in with a shout at the league and it’s been a great run by Hearts too.
Whatever happens will happen.

One notable change for today:
When Celtic play it’s usually 11 against 15, but today it’s definitely Celtic against the world!
Let Celtic’s gladiators emerge victorious!
