  1. Now it is Gollum’s turn to play with Craig Gordon’s head.

    The Sunday Post, Gordon Smith:

Transfer window shows that our game might not be as bad as we often think it is

I NEVER expected this transfer window to give the Scottish game a shot in the arm, but that’s the way it has turned out.

To be fair, it is the unexpected nature of the wheelings and dealings which has made it so fascinating.

Who could have expected Chelsea, the English Premier League leaders, would come in with a £3-million bid for Celtic keeper, Craig Gordon?

That Rangers would have to issue a ‘Hands Off’ warning to Hull City after learning of their interest in Josh Windass through the media?

Or, indeed, that Kilmarnock would get £1-million for the sale of Souleymane Coulibaly to Egyptian outfit, Al Ahly?

Throw in the news that Barcelona are keeping tabs on a Falkirk teenager – the talented left- back, Tony Gallacher – and it all adds up to a pleasing conclusion.

We might be better thought of outside these shores than we had previously thought.

The proposed Gordon deal is ongoing. Chelsea, seemingly unprepared to take no for an answer, are considering just how much it would take to land a player they are said to have admired for a couple of years now.

While Brendan Rodgers’ first response was that his player was not for sale, I am not convinced it will prove the case.

There is, I would argue, the possibility for everyone to be a winner here.

Celtic can pick up a nice fee for a player who, at 34, is in the later stages of his career. £5-million would probably do it.

Craig Gordon, meanwhile, can pick up both a nice hike in his wages and an unexpected opportunity to taste life at a club who are liable to start next season among the favourites to win the Champions League itself.

On paper, he would be a back-up keeper. But with regular stories of interest from Real Madrid and beyond in Thibaut Courtois, you never know.

Finally, it would be a great opportunity for Dorus de Vries – a Rodgers signing don’t forget – to regain his starting place at Celtic in what will be a low-pressure finish to the season.

As surprised as I was by that, I was near-amazed to hear Josh Windass talked of as a possible replacement for £10-million midfielder, Robert Snodgrass, at Hull City.

Windass is a good prospect, yes. But the lad is nowhere near ready for the EPL. In truth, he is still finding his feet in the SPFL.

That couldn’t be said of Coulibaly, who deserves his move after making a real impact in our top flight.

Kilmarnock deserve credit as well as their profit for spotting his potential.

It is ironic, meanwhile, to find the player getting most hype in terms of the size of the clubs following his progress is a young Scottish left-back.

With Kieran Tierney, David Robertson and Stephen Kingsley – the respective first picks for Celtic, Hull City and Swansea – all already in contention to be Scotland’s first-choice in the position, we really are spoiled for choice.

Ryan Christie isn’t one who is really thought of in terms of representing the national team right now, but that could change if he makes the most of his loan move to Aberdeen.

Celtic fans will relish the fact he has been loaned to a side vying with rivals Rangers for runner- up spot, as well as his social media history of being critical of the Dons.

Personally, I don’t think either is really an issue.

The majority of Ibrox regulars who were dubious of Mo Johnston’s arrival at Ibrox forgot their objections when he started scoring and it will be the same story with Christie at Pittodrie.

Rangers have new arrivals of their own, and they will either be good enough, or they won’t.

  9. Gordon Smith: Questions have to be asked at Rangers as Mark Warburton pleads for transfer window funds

WHAT were Rangers doing when Celtic were snapping up Moussa Dembele?

That’s the question the Light Blues board of directors are entitled to be asking themselves just now as Mark Warburton pleads for transfer window funds.

They won’t be in any doubt reinforcements are needed for the second half of the season.

Yes, the Light Blues were better against Celtic at Ibrox on Hogmanay.

The gap between the teams, however, was still pronounced.

Dembele was part of that, and I doubt Rangers could have pipped Celtic for his signature, as they didn’t have the Champions League as a potential carrot.

What the Ibrox directors will be questioning, however, is whether their manager has got value for the money that was laid out.

I say this after it emerged that the Hoops are believed to have rebuffed a £20-million inquiry from West Ham for Dembele.

That was very significant on two fronts.

One – it values the player as worth at least £20-million. That’s FORTY times, it should be remembered, the £500,000 Celtic paid Fulham for him in compensation in the summer.

Two – it shows the Hoops to be on such a firm financial footing, they are able to turn down the chance to make an enormous profit.

I suspect, despite manager Brendan Rodgers’ assertions to the contrary, Dembele’s transfer might still go through.

It was interesting to read reports the Hoops would be agreeable to a bid in the region of £30-million, and West Ham’s need to bring in a quality goalscorer is clear.

If it happens, there will be a striking contrast in the transfer dealings of the two Old Firm rivals in the previous window.

Celtic, a club with lots of money to spend, will have bought low and sold high. Impressively high.

Rangers, with severely restricted finances, will have bought relatively high – the £1.8-million spent on Joe Garner – yet had precious little return on their investment.

The former Preston player has become something of a cult hero with the supporters for the way he throws himself about the pitch.

For me, however, goals and assists are what matters when it comes to assessing the contribution of strikers. In those respects, Garner comes up short.

29 years old in a couple of months, unlike Dembele he is not someone who is going to gain value.

To be fair to Warburton, the other, younger Joe – Dodoo – has shown flashes of potential since coming north.

And it’s a little early to be writing off either of the Accrington pair of Josh Windass and Matt Crooks. The latter has been injured much of the time, while Windass has had his moments.

Overall, though, the jury on Warburton’s spending remains out.

What he really needs to do right now is to somehow source a dominant, solid and experienced central defender.

I know Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos were brought to the club with exactly this thought in mind.

The first named has been OK, but is 38. The latter just hasn’t worked out.

Andrew Davies of Ross County is the sort of player I am talking about. He is someone who has always impressed me and looks tailor-made for the job.

As he is under contract at Dingwall, I feel Rangers may have to go to the English lower leagues (from where Davies was picked up by County) to find the man they are looking for.

It won’t be easy but they will have to redouble their efforts.

The final conclusion to be drawn from the Dembele scenario is that it’s going to be easier for Celtic to bring high-quality, young players north in the future than it will be for their rivals.

So Rangers, mind the gap – before it becomes too wide to cross.

Chelsea are expected to return to Celtic with a second bid for Craig Gordon today, but a significant hike from their opening bid will need to be tabled for the Parkhead side to give it consideration.

Gordon kept a clean sheet as Celtic beat Hearts 4-0 yesterday to create a new record of 27 games unbeaten at the start of a season, overtaking the previous best of 26 set by the Lisbon Lions.

Brendan Rodgers maintains that Gordon is not a player that Celtic want to sell, although it is thought that privately the keeper will seek permission from the club to enter into dialogue with Chelsea if and when a second bid is received.

The Scotland internationalist was subject of an opening bid believed to be less than £3m for Gordon, an offer that is significantly below the valuation that the club have for the 34-year-old.

Their resolve is likely to be tested over the next 24 hours, though, with an improved offer anticipated for the Scotland internationalist.

“There is nothing new,” said Rodgers. “He is a player we want to keep.”

However, there also seemed to be a recognition that if the club’s valuation for the player is met then there may well be something to think about.

“Chelsea have an interest in him but for any interest to be activated there has to be a valuation of the player that has to be met,” said Rodgers.

“We don’t want to sell him of course but if there’s any way that would make Celtic think then there has to be an offer that would allow us to do that as a club. And what came in was nowhere near that level.

“There’s nothing we have got from Chelsea that would make us think in any way we would want to lose a goalkeeper. He is a goalkeeper I really want to keep here. I have enjoyed seeing his progress and development.”

Rodgers, though, maintains that Gordon will be squandering game time if he opts to warm a bench rather than play football. And the Celtic manager also believes that the keeper has been improved this season under the tutelage of the current coaching staff.

“He is a player that, with all due respect, when myself and my staff came in here he was a far cry away from what he is now as a goalkeeper,” said Rodgers.

“He is a goalkeeper who, whenever I studied the games here in the past, when the ball went back to Craig the crowd were nervous and the players were nervous and he was probably nervous.

“If you look at him now his game because of our style has elevated him to one of the best clubs in Europe wanting to take him down there as a number two.

“I have had a few conversations with him and he is clear where we are at.

“I understand the lure of it (Chelsea bid) and I also understand what it would mean for Craig to go there as a number two for the next two years and waste away his career in not playing games.”
