I was aware of the name from reading about Celtic’s history.

I’m surprised so few had even heard of it.

  2. I don’t believe the 6:15 kick off will help increase the crowd. People are barely home from work at that time, trying to have dinner. Lunch time for me. It’s hardly TV Prime Time in any time zone.

Why did the Huns, second in SPL, playing a Championship side, receive the Prime Time slot?

  3. lets all do the huddle on

glasgow airport will be lively tonite, going by the number of folk in graces this afternoon with luggage getting scooped before their flights back to ireland later 😄

  4. prestonpans bhoys on

    GG

My guess is that the huns are at home and a earlier kickoff would affect their attendance and you don’t want to upset them!

  5. I don’t think the Hayshed thing merits a rammy- it looks like it may have been used way back – none of us youngsters 😁 have heard it used.

Cowshed – now that does exist – at Cappielow

  6. Afternoon again

No memories of the North Terrave ever being referred to as the Hayshed ( or indeed the North Terrace) it was always ‘The Jungle’. As to how it got its name I’d always thought it was because the morass of girders in the roof and supporting wall made it seem to some to be like a Jungle. Seems as believable or not as stuff about soldiers who fought in a real jungle.

What I’d dispute is the idea that it was not until the late 70s that it became the most vocal part of the ground. I was first taken to see Celtic at home in 1968 and we went to the wee enclosure in front of the stand or, if my wee sister went , to the stand itself. Looking round the ground as a child the Jungle even then was obviously the busiest and noisiest part of the ground. I accept that at European games the two ‘ends’ were packed and because there were at least double the number of folk in each of the ends the Jungle was less dominant . However , when it came to noise at a game versus Airdrie, Clyde, Raith Rovers in front of 31000 fans the noise seemed to me mainly coming from those stood opposite me. But it’s a long time ago.

To be fair someone like a journo with research experience and facilities at their disposal like Andrew Smith of the Scotsman for example, as someone has just posted no need for a rammy

  8. Jimbo – I wouldn’t argue with you re noise from the jungle – could easily be my childhood memories of the Celtic end which are colouring my emotions.

Maybe the younger CQNrs are wondering why we even had a ‘Celtic End’? What was the other end called?

  9. rare footage, kilmarnock v celtic 1957, playing in the all white shamrock strip, no numbers on shorts.

No probs- as I say its a long time ago and my memory is as unreliable as anybody else’s. Reading Ernie’s links re Hayshed/Cowshed I did realise that I had read similar before – but never heard anybody refer to it.

I don’t remember the stand being too quiet either- the wooden flooring being stamped made quite a racket although I don’t think I ever saw the pre-match ‘ walk on’ spread to it.

  12. St Stivs – I know it is a silent film but when the ole Marquis fell off his horse I distinctly heard ‘Penalty to Rangers’

Good evening all from the Victoria Bar. I wish you all health, happiness and a long life full of good times. And if you are a lurking hun GIRFUY and drop dead. I feel better for that.

  14. The okd pavilion, hayshed referred to as the jungle, grant stand without the glass looks an impressive structure, good sized crown for the neutral venue, guessing a midweek afternoon for a replay,

  15. My memory was sparked by the talk about the Jungle

Back in the late 80’s Hugh McIlvanney once started a 2 page Observer article about Celtic..

    “It’s Dark

    It’s Hot

    It’s Noisy

    It’s Green….

    They call it “The Jungle”

    A genius at work.

( Hugh McIlvanney not me 😀)

  16. Big Jimmy,

I hope you are well, well as well as can be – Wednesday Night must have been some tonic!

I think you were wrong to say what you did about Jinkyredstar.

From his posts I discern he is an oldie (Jeez – I hit 50 this year).

I never watched the hun game Today, how was it Refereed?

Yesterdays performance by that Cheat was reprehensible.

  17. It was mair Breakbeat at the Time.

Alexandro, as Kojo would say, looks to be an absolute Brammer.

I seen so many Amazing things Yesterday in the Celtic performance….. The Celtic Ball Bhoys were not as World Class as the Hibees Manager suggested. So Real Madrid wullnae be looking to nab our World Class Ball Bhoys …Yet!!!

We are Learning so much from playing the best teams out there.

    Ange is the Man.

  18. Petec- I didn’t take any offence from Jimmy, I think I got caught in the middle of something between others.

Yes I am an ‘oldie’ 😀. First game was 1962 so I do have a lot of memories to share.

I have met many CQNrs over the years – hope to make it to the Shipbank one day

    All the best to you

  19. Wish we had Thiago of Liverpool in our midfield , did anyone notice on Wednesday more-or less .

At Thiago like a wee boy asked for his baw back , no snarling Gubby wee Rat we see up here .

  20. Re the 6.15 ko on Wednesday. It’s a weird one but the reason the Huns will be the later will be traffic through Glasgow at rush hour would make it something the Scottish police would not entertain.

Crazy for us though. Guessing Motherwell would not have wanted a Tuesday game after playing today. We could not do a Thursday as we could not put hertz game back to Sunday due to CL game on next Tuesday.

Prem Sports have rights to 3 matches.

Only other option would have been Huns on Tuesday but then playing today rules that out.

  21. The 1898 Grant Stand — in the cup replay film — is still the most impressive / sophisticated / dominating structure ever to be built at P/head /CP2.

    Well in my opinion anyway.

AL with his 1929 stand phoned it in — the design came straight out of the bargain basement end of his catalogue.

Wee FMcC and his 90’s knock off version of the M/field rebuild delivered on seats / view for 90% but little else.

We need to up our game for the much needed Main Stand rebuild.

Hopefully AP will stick around to help fund it / fill it.

67,525 is a number with a nice ring to it.

  22. Petec – read about that this morning, the actual Smiley (with a Smiley face) came ne’er attack last year as potentially offending folk who weren’t happy (such as Chris Boyd)

My personal preferences are : 🥃🥃🥃🥃🕺🕺🕺

Being one of the few, I guess, who really enjoys your posts, I am truly surprised that you feel ` The Hayshed` would be familiar to Celtic fans. I have never hear anyone referring to any part of the ground by that name.

I have just `phoned a 90 year old Celtic relation ( who sits beside me at the ground) and he is not aware of it either. He did ask , though as to which part of the ground the name refers.
