How Ronny Deila found his feet at Celtic

    Published: Monday 17 August 2015, 10.52CET

Ronny Deila endured a calamity-strewn first autumn at Celtic, but a year on, and with his side within sight of the group stage, Alex O’Henley feels he has weathered the storm.

    by Alex O’Henley

    from Glasgow

Asked to sum up his maiden campaign in charge of Celtic, Ronny Deila said it had been a combination of “hell and heaven”. The celestial heights eventually came in the shape of a domestic league and cup double but the 39-year-old admitted his first six months in Glasgow had been “very tough”.

Following in the footsteps Neil Lennon – who had led the Hoops to a famous UEFA Champions League win against the mighty Barcelona in 2012 – was never going to be an easy task, especially for a relatively inexperienced manager. Although he had made his name by leading Strømsgodset to their first Norwegian title in 43 years in 2013, moving to a club with the tradition of Celtic was a big step up for Deila, who had previously been considered for a position as Lennon’s assistant.

While he charactarised his arrival at the club as the best day of his life, Deila had little time to put his stamp on the team before they were pitched into UEFA Champions League qualifiers last summer. A humiliating 6-1 aggregate defeat to Legia Warszawa in the third qualifying round was partially redeemed when an administrative error handed the Hoops a reprieve and a play-off spot against Maribor. However, it was a stroke of luck that Deila’s side failed to capitalise on, Celtic losing to the Slovenian side and settling for a UEFA Europa League place.

It was a disappointing start, and there would be teething problems at home too, with Celtic dropping 15 points in the Scottish Premiership before the New Year, promoted Hamilton Academical notably earning their first success at Celtic Park in 76 years. These were testing times for the Norwegian but his pressing, high tempo game gradually won over players and supporters, culminating in the coach’s much feted ‘Ronny Roar’ which greeted ten-man Celtic’s 2-1 victory against title rivals Aberdeen at the start of November.

That game proved to be a turning point for Deila, and with the players now fully buying into his ’24-hour athlete’ approach, Celtic cruised to a fourth consecutive title, finishing a commanding 17 points ahead of the Dons. However, European success will always be the ultimate yardstick for any Celtic manager, and although Deila led the Hoops to the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League before being edged out by Internazionale Milano last season, reaching the group stages of the UEFA Champions League remains the Holy Grail.

Ironically, fellow Norwegian Åge Hareide stands in Deila’s way as Celtic prepare for Wednesday’s first leg of their play-off tie against Swedish champions Malmö, a club Deila might have joined before the opportunity came to move to Scotland. Despite his difficult start in Glasgow, Deila has no regrets and in his own words his dream is “to keep winning, winning, winning and to go to the Champions League and make the Scottish people proud of Celtic”

  3. Patricia and Dominic – it’s a situation myself and no doubt nearly everyone on here will have experienced. A loved one with a serious or potentially serious medical condition. It sure is hard. But it never crosses your mind to do anything other than support your loved one as best you can. I’m sure they will.

Prayers are for all in this or similar situation.

To KevJ, your determination is evident I your postings on here so it can be assumed that you will do everything to ease the fears of those around you. I sincerely hope that the incompetence of the health professionals does not affect the ability to make a full recovery.

    Best wishes.

    Not aff oot, still here.

  7. As most of you will know, my daughter, 15, found 2 of lumps on her breast a about 3 months ago.

    Very, very, very, worrying.

At the hospital she had an ultrasound followed by a double biopsy. We were given a sealed report to take back to the doctor we had seen initially an hour or so earlier.

He looked at the report and said we would get written confirmation in 10 days detailing exactly the results of the biopsys.

10 days came and went, nothing, and on the eleventh day, a Saturday, we got a letter from the hospital which asked us to phone to make another appointment. Nothing else. No detailed results!

    PANIC!!!!!

There was noone at the hospital who could help me until the following Monday. I called the number from the letter to get a message saying sorry I’m on annual leave please phone this other number.

When I called the second number I got the the same “annual leave” message telling me to phone the first number!!

Having phoned the hospital switchboard I was kept holding for more than half an hour before being told that someone would call me back before noon. It was 9:00am.

A secretary called a couple of hours later and said we had got the WRONG LETTER, and that the results were fine. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I was too relieved that my wee girl was OK to complain about the cock up.

She is in next week to get the lumps removed, so hopefully that is the end of it.

If any of you ghuys can remember what I look like from the last Hootenanny, wait ’til you see me now.

    10 years older at least.

The |Hooper story might just be media nonsense but could be a good addition for us if we got the right Gary Hooper back,( not the one who couldnae be ersed in his final season with us.)

The NHS is not perfect and it does under perform at times, especially in terms of communication but it does deliver the best possible care at times under great strain. The NHS is a lot better than any other alternatives that provide gold standard care for those who can afford it and if not well don’t get sick.

Philbhoy pleased to hear your daughter’s results are good. Please make sure you complain about the poor communication, especially the wrong letter.

  12. Good morning everyone shocked to hear of Kevjs treatment by the nhs thoughts & prayers to you & your family &hope you are back to good health soon

My Mum has rarely met a family as lovely as you,C and O. She’s hard to impress-I know,I’ve tried for fifty-odd years-and you three charmed the socks off her in seconds.

The communication has clearly been disastrous for you. But the medical care will be wonderful.

A wee shooting star confirmed it last week,so it must be true!
