BITTER END OF FERGUS; McCann bows out of Celtic with last sad attack on almost everyone.

FERGUS McCann walked out of Celtic Park for the last time yesterday – and couldn’t resist a final dig at Scottish football.
Top of his hit list was Hampden Park, which he said should never have been rebuilt. He claims that Parkhead and Ibrox could have been used to host Scotland’s international matches.
The former Celtic chairman and chief executive, currently living the life of a tax exile in France, called on the Government to hold a public inquiry into the funding crisis at the revamped National Stadium.
And McCann claimed the problems could have been avoided had First Minister Donald Dewar and Scottish Executive minister Sam Galbraith listened to his warnings in the first place.
The National Stadium Company, who rebuilt the stadium at a cost of pounds 60 million, are said to be somewhere between pounds 4m and pounds 10m in debt.
The Fraud Squad have been called in and contractors Robert McAlpine have taken legal action against the company for non-payment of bills.
McCann, who opposed the SFA’s plans to do up Hampden from the outset, believes many of the problems could have been avoidedHe said: “What has been seen recently is by no means a shock to me.
“I made every effort I could to try to speak to Mr Dewar and he declined to see me.
“I did meet with Mr Galbraith but he did nothing about the things I pointed out to him.
“There is much more than that. Hampden Park is not just a great folly, but a great scandal.
“It has cost clubs like Celtic and many others very heavily, aside, of course, from the taxpayer.
“There are many things which have to be dealt with and uncovered and I am sure that only a public inquiry can deal with.”
But his comments were instantly attacked by Dave Whitton, First Minister Donald Dewar’s spin doctor, who said: “I can’t say we are really surprised at what Mr McCann had to say.
“He had two meetings. One in 1997 with Brian Wilson and one in 1998 with Sam Galbraith during which he expressed his views on the Hampden project.
“After meeting with two Ministers, there was no point in him meeting Mr Dewar, who was then Scottish Secretary, because we all knew what he was going to say.”
Mr Whitton also pointed out that Celtic Park received the largest grant from the Football Trust – over pounds 4m – towards the redevelopment of the stadium.
Former Celtic director Michael Kelly was even more scathing of McCann’s broadside.
He said: “Hampden Park is a matter for the British taxpayer.
“The reason Fergus went to live in France was to avoid paying British taxes.
“This has even less to do with Fergus than it had before he went into exile.”
However, despite causing uproar on his last official visit to Glasgow’s east end, McCann shouldn’t have too much trouble doing what he was basically there to do – sell his majority shareholding in the club.
Last night there was no shortage of high-profile fans queueing up to snap up a part of the millionaire’s huge stake in the famous club.
Scots rocker Jim Kerr was obviously prepared to forgive and forget the man who once famously snubbed him – if it means increasing his shareholding in his beloved club.
The Simple Minds front man confirmed that he has gone back on his earlier vow not to hand any of his cash over to the outgoing Celtic supremo.
He said: “Contrary to what I said before, I will be delighted to take some of Fergus’s shares off him.
“At the time, I was so annoyed at the way we had been dealt with that I wanted no part of his enterprise.
“My involvement now should be seen as support for the new Celtic management team of Kenny Dalglish, Allan MacDonald and chairman Frank O’Callaghan.”
Earlier this year, Kerr and his consortium were fiercely rebuffed in their attempts to take over the 111-year-old club. That team included Kenny Dalglish, now head of Celtic’s football operations.
The experience was uppermost in his mind last night, when he stressed it is his belief in the current management team that has won him over.
Kerr said: “I believe in the vision of Allan MacDonald, rather than the views of someone I do not know.
“Allan MacDonald has both the passion and the brains to take Celtic to a new level.”
And Rab C. Nesbitt actor Tony Roper, another famous Celtic fan, confirmed that he would also be adding to his shareholding and former director Willie Haughey confirmed he would also be subscribing to the new share offer.
