  1. no, I’M Neil Lennon “i’ll never walk alone” (fourstonecoppi )

    GRRRR

On the bright side us Celtic fans will never celebrate or cheer such sportsmanship.

The constant minor fouls on Celtic players after they had released the ball.

An Italian player manhandling our captain while he was speaking with the referee.

The refusal by the referee to play our advantage if it favoured the Italians not to do so.

  2. Celtic played well tonight, we came up against a clinical, talented team who set out to frustrate us.

How much possession did we have?

We had how many chances in the first half?

Mistakes were made, by both the manager and players, but that was the last 16, not a qualifier we lost to a very very good team.

We have more experience now than we had in August, a steep learning curve if you will.

Now finish the season with a double please Neil.

And prepare for the qualifiers in July.

The support, us, we were magnificent, that’s being honest not trumpet blowing.

    It’s just true.

Fair play to the a Juve fans in the ground, they were passionate, and as I left the ground they sang, Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay, Celtic, Celtic.

Although during the game I hated them, sportingly that is.m

  3. OG,

That, at least, will keep a few smug Sevconians in their place when discussing our CL fortunes. I can go to bed with a wee smile on my face.

It could be worse, I could be from Govan!

    Hail Hail!

  4. jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on

    Super Sutton

Neil shld have realised 10 mins into the 2nd half Efe was mentally nacked and subbed him. A wee bit of stubborness from Neil IMO

    Love the guy BTW

  5. Also Wanyama. His performance tonight and against Barca show that he could grace any midfield in Europe.

I suspect he’s for the off (fair enough, if that’s the strategy…), but we should not be letting him go for less than £15million.

That haddie Hutton went for £9million a few years ago, and he was rank. Wanyama is a future European footballer of the year.

  6. We were the better team for 60-70 minutes then faded badly. Hardly surprising given the effort we put in closing them down, especially in their half. They took control when Lustig came off (coincidence maybe?)and they started to get space down our right flank.

  7. Disappointing scoreline that belies the 90 minutes.

Fine lines at this level and Juve undoubtedly got more than their play merited. While individual mistakes cost us, as a team and a Club we have many positives to focus on.

One hard lesson from tonight was that, at this level, at times it pays to be streetwise.

We had clear issues with the referee around set-pieces and post-match Neil commented the players were complaining to no avail. The difference between us and a streetwise team however is that we did not make it a clear issue for the ref on the pitch. A referee at this stage of the tournament wants to keep a low profile and skirt away from issues – it plays to his advantage when it comes to getting an appointment in later rounds and the nodding heads look for a safe choice. Individual comments from players during the game are therefore easily dismissed and the ref happily avoids confronting the issue.

If roles had been reversed, Juve as a team would have been round the ref, throwing arms in the air and gesticulating, making clear to everyone watching the ref had a problem. By doing that you force a ref to make a decision – he becomes self-aware and conscious that he has to get involved with everyone now aware of the problem sitting in judgement. That’s the type of pressure which a Man Utd, Juve or Barca would apply.

  8. Lets put in a decent show in Turin. Get the double and qualify for this comp again next season. Neil Lennon is doing a first class job.

  9. I thought Celtic played great tonight.

Lack of finishing and luck cost us dearly.

Some of my fears were confirmed in this game:

    1. Buffon was right.

    2. Italian football is not yet crap.

    3. Lenny has a lot to learn tactically.

    4. Celtic squad is deficient at this level in the striker and centre back departments.

    5. As Gary Neville after the England v Portugal game and Paul Lambert after Seville alluded to we just have to learn how to cheat to the same level as the Latins. Its part of their game…or words to that effect

    6. Spanish refs and the Latin ref bias towards British teams in general continues. Like FIFA coaching refs at world cup games same happens w/UEFA I think and Champions league at this stage i.e. “watch Celtic at corners”. Some of the man handling of Celtic players in the box at corners was just outrageous. If it was reversed the refs decisions would have been different.

    7. ok expecting a clear out and continuous rebuilding in the summer :)

As I said last night if Celtic can keep a clean slate for 30 minutes they might win this tie.

  10. Snake,

That’s a daft post. Can’t speak for the rest but the Portuguese are a wonderful people, very similar to the scots if you spend time with them (out with the tourist spots)….

So thats one example, so I am is sure there are others who could do the same.

    Cheers

Proud tonight we were EVEN there. Shame we made some bad choices and were exposed for them, but hey ho, 2 nil at half time in the Juve grun, and who knows

  11. I don’t blame Neil for picking Ambrose. He made a decision and it didn’t pay off. Probably should have subbed him at some point, but hindsight etc. I do think the approach to the game was questionable – presumably the loss of the early goal dictated things to an extent, but we looked awful daft at times. That was the bit that was disappointing for me – it was as if all the progress and learning we’d accumulated over the last couple of seasons was ditched.

When we chased the game in the second half I thought we were starting to look a bit exposed and liable to be caught out. Looking back, I think Ambrose could have done with some protection from the rest of the team.

Juve were dirty cheating so and so’s but I wonder if we let them distract us with their nonsense? I do think Celtic have a right to ask questions about what was going on, all the same. The guy on the touchline couldn’t have missed what was happening in front of him, but in not reacting to the fouls he gave the referee the opportunity to let Lichsteiner (the man with the most annoying face in the world – FACT) do whatever he wanted.

I thought that we got spanked by the end, and I’d rather forget all about the second leg to be honest. Onward to next year’s adventure.

  12. 67 European Cup Winners on

First time post in a while. Forever Celtic and I remain proud – but very naive tonight – the objective was to keep the game alive until second half in Turin Very hard to make any impression now In reality game over. Hail hail. X 67 ECW

Don’t agree mate. I remember chelksi doing the like not too long ago. I and I suspect, a great many people just thought they lacked class. Not how I want to see Celtic players behave.

  14. pedrocaravanachio67 on

Thought Buffon was excellent tonight along with his three defenders, when he had the ball, the 2 full backs dropped back to almost in line with the six yard box and the centre half to the edge of the box. Buffon was happy to play the ball to any one of the three, which meant 3 of our players were drawn out to leave a gaping hole in the middle of the park for Pirlo to operate in. Granted we did work hard and close it down on numerous occasions, but it was a clever tactic and interesting to watch.

I’ve been captivated by Lenny’s Celtic for the past 2 years. There is something emerging at Celtic that is new, fresh and exciting. Losing this tie, and it is all but lost now, is no great setback provided the manager and the players learn from it.

It was an odd game, with the scoreline giving an impression of the match that is largely misleading. Celtic played well in large measure, but lacked that ‘imagination’ that the top teams have. Juve’s 2nd goal exemplified this.

Lenny made an error of professional judgement though in playing Ambrose, and sadly it took all of 3 minutes to expose it. A restless sleep on Saturday night ahead of the Nations Cup Final on Sunday, a night of celebration afterwards, and a 12 hour nightshift slog back to Glasgow via London from South Africa is a ‘sub-optimal’ preparation for a Call Centre handler let alone an elite athlete. Ambrose ought never have been stripped, and Lenny will reflect on this in the coming days.

We missed Sammi. Forrest was playing without the benefit of much match time. Izzy touch and go beforehand. Juve are a class outfit and we were disadvantaged before the whistle blew. Once it blew it became apparent that Juve had a 12th man in the form of the refereeing approach. With the best will in the world, Celtic in the current era don’t beat Juve without the wind in our sails. It wasn’t tonight.

In the circumstances, the bhoys gave their all, and I look forward to their Celtic story unfolding in the coming years.

  17. The sleekit double bookings.

Anyway. I’m going to listen to some cheerful music.

At least Gordon Strachan isn’t beholden to the compliant commentariat and will always speak his mind.

  18. There is definitely something in the “group complaining” tactic. Man United under Keane were masters at it.

Even if it doesn’t intimidate the ref it forces him to think carefully about the next few decisions, puts him on the back foot.

    Cheating? Maybe… or maybe streetwise…

They were happy to surrender possession to us, as we weren’t hurting them. They will look at this game as a textbook away performance in Europe….job done after 3 minutes!

I’m proud of what Lenny and the bhoys have achieved in Europe this year, but we have to face up to the fact that we have reached our glass ceiling. We have to continue developing young homegrown and imported talent and hope for more European campaigns like this season, until the football environment changes and we can afford to buy some top players.

  20. Barcelona sat in our 3rd and that allowed us to counter attack and win…….Juventus sat in their own 3rd and counter attacked us and won.

What we witnessed was the hard nosed professionalism that comes with a team worth 150M+ against a team assembled for around 20M. How we square the circle and find a away forward to progress at this level is anyones guess.

We saw plenty of the ball and had around 10 half chances which we failed to convert. Juventus had hardly more than three and scored three which tells its own story.

We are a young team and will be back. Some will leave others will come through and yet more shall arrive. The team now knows what it takes to reach this level the next lesson is learning to remain there.

    “Celtic…..more than a football club”

  21. The Hat

I don’t think Celtic throwing the toys at the ref would have resulted in anything only bookings for us, he simply was not going to stop Juve pulling and holding. If 60,000 fans can’t ‘force’ the ref to apply the basics, I don’t see the point in our players losing their heads.

Agree we should not generalize that ‘Italians are corrupt’

    BUT

The Juventus Manager took charge of his first CL game tonight two years after he took over Juventus. He was banned for the group games.

We played a club who could come close to rival rangers for corruption.

They played the rules to the extreme, the disappointing way current football lays.

It was blatantly obvious not everyone in the stadium (and on TV) what was going on.

What the held we could have dons I’m not sure.

  24. A few weeks ago, Paul wrote an excellent article about not making basic errors at this level.

Tonight we did. Ref a side for a minute, we gifted them two goals and missed to sitters – Wanyama and Ambrose. There in lies the tale.

  25. Proud to be a tim tonight as always, thought izzy in particular played well, few good performances, but a few poor ones cost us,ref was a disgrace, can’t believe officials behind goal get paid…… for what????feel for the fans travelling to Turin but i know you will enjoy yourselves as always and do us proud, hail hail

  28. The Referee was not going to give a penalty against Juventus tonight and their Club and players knew it. Ambrose sold the jerseys tonight,of that there is no doubt, but Italian football is reeking of corruption.
