    THE LONG THROW

Over the next few days our focus, quite rightly, will be on probably our most important European match for some considerable time in the Champions League tie with Young Boys at Celtic Park.

However I should like to air a subject that has bothers me for and from what I see is more prevalent in Scotland than anywhere else, namely the use of the long throw-in into the opponent’s penalty box. There were quite a few examples from Scottish Cup matches yesterday.

Football, “the beautiful game”, as the name suggests (except in the US) is a game predominately played with the feet and not the hands; in fact use of the hands is punished by various decisions dependent on location and circumstance. The only player in a team able to play the ball legally with the hand is the goalkeeper, with one exception – the restarting of the game with a throw-in when any player can direct the ball into the field of play using both hands in a prescribed manner.

Where I take issue is that it appears that more than ever some teams are coaching and recruiting players who possess the ability to propel the ball as far as by hand as others do by foot, and with understandable more accuracy and certainty. Most goals are scored within the penalty area and so it seems an anathema to me that propelling/placing the ball with the hands into that area from the touch-line is allowable – there is no FOOTBALL skill in it whatsoever. It is more like a line-out in rugby, a predominately hand game, but with much higher stakes. A team can outplay an opponent in all the skillful aspects of football and be undone by a second-ball and /or ricochet, the result of a long throw delivered into the box. Throwing is a skill in field events in athletics, e.g. hammer, discus and javelin – it should not be countenanced in football.

If we play FOOTball let the ball enter play by a pass-in from touch, with a five-metre opposition exclusion area as opposed to the ten required at free-kicks given for infringements. Only goalkeepers should display hand skills in football – ban the long-throw NOW!

C’mon….when was the last time we played down the flanks and whipped a cross in from the bye line?….Really?…

Whipped the cross in from the bye line!?

I didn’t say that, that was artistic license on your part:))

No my point was our attacks that went direct through the centre, gave Killie defence a torrid time.

“To those who dont really like BR or his style of play, as much as I agree with many of the things you guys say (I’m sure you care), I just dont recall the same attitudes towards Ange when he was here (and he most certainly did not vary his style of play against any team). Happy to be completely wrong on that, but just dont.

(and BTW, I’m not BRs biggest fan !)”

Well you wouldn’t get the same attitude to Ange…

For me this has little to do with football and lots to do with corporate politics.

The placemen, and they have popped up again all over the place this month follow an agenda…

It’s a long tried and tested tactic

    Try to change people’s perceptions

    Let me give an example.

    “31003

Agree that we will only progress if we do vary it. No point in the debate when the current man is in charge. He won’t do that”

Compare and contrast that to this…

“His system has been exposed repeatedly over the last two months and needs urgent revision.  Best of luck to those who want to have a chat to him about it.

As I say, and old tactics but an effective one.

    I was taught it as…

    …”perception is everything”

Yet truth is BR does change things…

Longterm; when Brendan Rodgers was here first time around he consistently played 4-2-3-1

Now he plays 4-3-3 and variations there off.

If you just look at our European games this season.

Tactics against Slovan Bratislava quite different from Atalanta, quite different from RB Leipzig.

In general, compared to Ange we are much more flexible, also our penalty taking has improved, our set plays have improved as well as other aspects of our play since Ange’s time.

Still work to be done of course but you won’t get the loathers giving BR&CO credit for it, so…

  7. DARWIN @ 5:35 AM,

Well good luck with your campaign, dont see the shie changing soon…

Interesting at their goal, how the Killie player adjusts his body to ensure he plays the ball with his arm and sets up young Wales at the back post.

A very clever piece of play, by ex-Celt Robbie Deas, if it had been off his knee it would be a fine assist.

As it was off his arm it should have been a foul, though not given.

Presumably as his arm was by his side, however what constitues a natural position when you turn and utilise that arm to pass the ball?

    “some unbelievable football at times”

shhh – keep it quiet – dont tell some on here

  11. Well done Celtic yesterday v Kilmarnock.

Some of our play was very good ( at times ). NICOLAS KUHN was quiet in the 1st half, but he came onto a good game in the 2nd half and it made a difference.

The Killie Goal was a strange one …..I watched the game on Premier Sports and Michael Stewart and the main Commentator were saying that ” According to the Rules, the Killie handball that led to their goal was LEGAL as it was another player actually scored…but IF the Killie player who played the ball with his arm had been the Goal Scorer, the ” Goal” would have been chalked OFF ” ?

I am a bit baffled as does that mean, ANY Player CAN Handball during a build up to a Goal, just as long as THAT PLAYER is NOT the actual Goal Scorer ?

If that is TRUE….Its the FIRST Time that I have heard of THAT RULE ?

    BAFFLED and CONFUSED !

    HH.

  12. BIG JIMMY @ 8:27 AM,

    Yes, it’s stuff and nonsense…

Although not an expert my understanding is if the ball hits your arm and it’s in a natural position it’s not a foul.

    OK

Now, if you are in the box and the ball hits your arm in a natural position and it sets you up to score, it is a foul as you got an advantage from “a handball”.

This new variation, if the ball hits your arm but sets up a team mate to score that’s fine!?

    Whit!!

Well Robbie Deas made a nonsense of that rule, and if he knew it, smart lad, cause he turns his whole body round so he can set up Wales with his arm.

Of course if he kept his body still and just moved out his arm to play the ball, it would have been a foul.

If Scottish Offiicals have to make a “common sense” decision, no way are Celtic benefiting from it…

    Hail Hail

  13. KILLIE HANDBALL ASSIST..

IF Michael Stewart and his Main Commentator are “CORRECT” about the Killie Goal being LEGAL yesterday DESPITE the CLEAR HANDBALL Assist, does that mean that ANY Player can now PICK UP the Ball with Both Hands and THROW or PUNCH or SLAP it to a Team Mate to score ?

WHEN did the Rule come in that a Player can Handball the Ball in the build up to knocking it on to a Team Mate to SCORE….being LEGAL ?

    HH

  14. lets all do the huddle on

played fine yesterday. made hunners of chances, just profligate in the penalty box! we definitely get less bang for our buck in terms of goals scored from the number of opportunities we create compared to our opponents, as has been mentioned often enough.

as for the hand/arm ball, i get the arm by your side argument, and also the fact he wasnt the goal scorer, but it looked to me as if the player deliberately used his arm to play the ball to the scorer, even if his arm was at his side. surely that rule is intended for accidental use of the arm, whereas the killie player seemed to know exactly what he was doing.

and as for the GB statement, a bit of uber-self-importance about it, albeit they arent miles out in what they say. but dont tell me to put my fone away, none of their business. and how did the barely audible Billy Reid song for example help the atmosphere yesterday?

  15. JACKIEMAC @ 8:52 AM,

    Don’t think so…

He was on the bench again for Arsenal yesterday but didn’t come on as he has done the last few games.

Make of that what you will…

cant find a text version of their statement, just pictures which i cant paste on here.

they basically banned me from checking the racing results on my phone during the game.

    aye right.

oh, and suggested i should sing more.

    fair enough.

then told me i cant leave the ground until the jannie has switched the lights oot.

they never mentioned whether im allowed to go for a kebab pie during the game or not so im left with more questions than answers.

so think i will just ignore all of it.
