  1. Lazio play at close to this level most weeks.

We play at it maybe 10 times a season.

    As for the ref. Pathetic.

  2. Gutted ! Played very well but why no red card gor assault on Hatate? Not too happy with CV coming on must have been rusty. Overall , extemely unlucky..and cheated!

  3. garygillespieshamstring on

I also thought Callum had an excellent game but we need to know when to commit a foul.

We would have had a point tonight if we were a bit smarter in seeing out the game.

  4. BIGSHUGGY – phillips had to come off as Rodgers knew the ref would have red carded him – he got a yellow for winning a header!

Italians know how to play the ref – we should know how to play that game too but we’re too nice / honest

  5. I understand the need to blame someone whether it be the ref or Peter or Mark Lawell but I think our main problem is we have a squad that is beyond challenge in SPFL but unsuited for the CL. and how much that is a failure of the Lawells I don’t know. We had some of our best/regular players performing not up to CL standard except for a few lively moments, that is Hatate and Maeda and this is the second game now. Phillips is still I think a new recruit in terms of the team’s cohesion and is not going to be a great influence for some time. Same for some of our other substitutes. Palma shows promise but not yet up to playing a full game at CL level I’d say. His goal was definitely offside. Yang a project and if Bada not injured he wouldn’t start. CCV brought back too soon and rusty. Thought big Joe could have done better for the goals as could some other defenders. EL looking unlikely now. It’s no wonder we are all disappointed – it’s so predictable, so groundhog day.

You can be sure Killie will try to take advantage of tonight. Expect high pressing and lots of stout defending.

Hello again all you young rebels.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said on here.

Another winnable game but the fates and a dodgy ref decided

    otherwise.

But signs showing through of improvement, maybe need a few

weeks yet till new players and injured are up to speed.

Having the usual bother getting in to CQN at the mo.

Embdy else or just me ?

  7. Good morning all from a very calm and still Garngad, I hope its not the eye of the storm.

    All good points made.

Personally I think we still need a proven winger, Young Yang’s end product just is not there yet. Palma needs time and like Yang will come good eventually.

But we need someone that is game ready and can take take defenders on with pace and skill.

Oh I better provide names as I am not aloud my opinion but feck it that is down to scouting team. Or is it a case they failed the manager like another keeper??

Good thing is I thought we played really well up until our final ball so much so Koyogo was dropping deeper and deeper to get the ball. Play the way we played last night and the league should pose no real problems.

    We played great.

All of our players played close to their best.

We still lost, in one of the (relatively) easiest ECL games we’ll ever play.

We concede one unforced error goal per ECL game – at least.

We are getting further away from ECL teams year on year.

This trend will continue because the plc has made a decision not to gamble on ECL credibility.

These games are only here for the fun.

  9. I don’t think we do ourselves any favours by claiming we’re almost there, we were unlucky etc

In my opinion, we don’t have the quality for this level.

Last seasons team were not competitive, in a European context, and there is little evidence that we’ve strengthened since.

Glad we weren’t hammered last night, though it’s looking ominously like a 4th placed finish.

I believe Brendan doesn’t yet have the team he’d like and hope to see some additions in January.

    In summary – disappointing

  10. I’ll give Yang his due, he never stopped trying to take his opponent on despite it being a tough night for him what with his lack of European football experience. One instance in particular resulted in a free kick from which Hatate drew a great save from the keeper.

The question has to be asked as to how long BR persists in playing Maeda on either wing, he is utterly ineffective in an attacking sense. I would use him him as an impact sub if he can’t play through the middle.

  11. My personal feeling is that it was one of our better performances in the ECL in recent times.

If I’m pointing any fingers, I said what I said about Joe Hart last night and I stick with it. He’s getting too old and we need a new keeper. I also thought that they exploited Taylors poor positional sense. Look back at the number of times there is a huge gap in his position. Even at their winner, the ball goes toward left back and four of our players move to cover the position. When players are fit I would try Scales at left back. He was superb last night again. We move on and we’re much better than I thought we would be.

  12. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

We won’t play much better this season. We were also great against Feyenoord for 45 minutes. However, in each game one our most important players (Hart, CCV) has coughed up a goal right at the end of a half. Add to that our lack of cutting edge at this level – case in point Maeda’s opportunity in the first half. He took a poor first touch then sclaffed a trundler back to their keeper. These chances are like hen’s teeth at this level and ECL level players take a killer first touch then bury the shot. I love Daizen and thought he was magnificent last night, but he’s playing with us because he’s not at that level.

The plc won’t gamble because £30-40M to move to 3rd place ECL level and double that to get to 2nd place level. It makes no sense financially as the potential reward isn’t in proportion to the gamble. Those are the harsh economic realities of our position and it isn’t going to change. Gutsy defeats like last night and the odd draw are the best we can realistically aspire to.

  13. Although we got beat by Lazio last night ,our forwards are looking good ,OH needs to be given more minutes, another goalkeeper is a must ,the rest can take care of themselves.

  14. I was absolutely gutted last night.

A real kick in the teeth. So despondent to lose an avoidable 95 minute goal.

We witnessed the sheer elation of scoring a 90+ minute winner only recently. . We knew the dangers and row z or the Gallowgate should have been our primary aim.

    Do we never learn.?

All the hard work and gameplan flung away .

Last night I was questioning if braving the torrential rain, the mad traffic jams and the 20 minute wait at the turnstiles was worth it.

I will be back on Saturday.

  15. being honest imo at this level our defending is appalling , we go into these CL games hoping not to get embarrassed , we have the best team in Scotland , win the league take the prize , rinse and repeat.

  16. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

If our players show promise they will attract interest from richer clubs and be sold. Even if he is of a similar standard, the replacement has to gain experience from scratch. If we are lucky he slots in seamlessly e.g AJ. If, as is likely, he takes time to get up to speed/settle we will suffer defeats by “fine margins” at the highest level because the collective experience of the team has been diminished e.g. would the probability of winning last night have been higher or lower if Jota had been on the left wing?

I go in to these games hoping for the best but expecting the worst based on what I’ve written above. I also have no issue with the business model, but those in charge should be more honest and define more clearly what is meant by “progress in Europe”. I have no doubt we’d do well in the Europa league, but progress in the CL is a fantasy. Our business model is not set up for it.

  17. Yes, we are prone to shooting ourselves in the foot, and have been for as long as I can remember, and there are no guarantees that if the ref had applied the rules fairly anything would have been different – but we should have been playing against 10 men for an hour last night. The forearm smash on Reo was deliberate and dangerous. Reo didn’t have time to even consider simulating injury, the foul knocked him clean off his feet.

Celtic should publicly question UEFA on this and why VAR did not intervene. It was much worse than the two red cards we got against Feyenoord.

  18. It’s the hope that kills ye. Groundhog day.

Bean counters that value the ECL entrance fee but have no ambition after that for the football supporters.

Rainy day funds & projects and punts give you players at a level that have brainfarts or don’t have in their locker the capacity to hurt or keep out a mediocre Italian mob last night.

Roll up again on Saturday. There’s a champions league slot on offer next season with even more money available for the suits, but, even more nights to endure plucky wee Celtic getting mugged in a generation of dismay, that shows no signs of changing.

Rinse and repeat. Sure it’s only the league that matters?

    Why so serious csc

  19. Hard for me to understand many of the comments. Most saying we played very well,as we did against Feyenoord, yet then going on to the usual,Board,Lawell, blah blah.Truth of the matter is,we were blatantly robbed in both games.Fine margins.Blatant Red last night for that assault on Hatate,,not even a Yellow. We saw his face, like a balloon when he got up.No VAR check was diabolical.Maeda touching ,faintly, the ball for the great Palma goal. Can’t remember the last time we got a break in Europe, always against us.Soul destroying.

Bright side,Palma,Bernardo, who changed the game.Must start on Saturday.Scales form,CCV back,O Riley, getting better every game.Hatate still nowhere near his best, that to come.

We will be fine with.A new keeper top of the list.

  20. Remembering Cqn poster George Ryan (Moniker St.John Doyle) who passed away 10 years ago today coming home from a game Vs Motherwell

God bless him and family now.

    Hail Hail

  21. Fine margins indeed cannot argue with that.

But that goes with quality players too, fine margins.

Then again you can only pee with the phallus you are given.

    Quality we need not quantity.

As i say Palma and Yang will be good at some point indeed Palma done ok last night but we need wingers to attack with power and pace on the biggest of stages.

1 quality winger and another keeper away IMO

  23. Well that last minute loss was a blow to the Solar Plexus. However, I enjoyed watching our play last night. For most of the the game we played with confidence and some of our football was great to watch and the best we’ve played in Europe for a long, long time. After our first goal we seemed to retreat into our shell until they equalised. During this period Scales who had been playing really well started making errors as did Taylor. We allowed them back into the game when we should have been pressing for a second goal. We recovered, however, and on the night I felt we played really well and were very unlucky with the disallowed goal and the loss of the late goal was a Groundhog Day event. I feel that when we get to the 85th minute and we are not losing in Europe we should protect our position and perhaps try to win on the break rather than attack, attack, attack. If we had held on to the draw Lazio would have had 2 points and us 1 point and it would have all been to play for.

Other observations: Reo is not as good as he thinks he is. Certainly not at this level yet. He has work to do. Matt O’Riley is becoming a great player but needs to work on his touch. Several times last night his second touch was a tackle because the ball bounced two yards away from him. He was still good. Palma is better than I thought he is. I thought both he and Yang offered us exactly the same and that we had bought the same player twice but I think he is ahead of Yang at this stage. Callum was simply superb.

  24. The trouble with Moneyball is that it provides no opportunities for a good group of players to develop over a couple of seasons into an efficient, effective team in Europe. You look at last night’s performance and think that if we keep most of that team together and in two or three seasons we will be a far better proposition in the CL. That won’t be the case, however, because Hatate, O’Riley and Johnston will all be gone and will be replaced by other players with whom we hope to repeat the trick of buying cheap and selling for squillions.

Anyway, I’m still a Tim looking forward to Saturday and also to our next CL game.

Incredible to think that it ten years since we lost St John Doyle.

Seems like no time at all.

    Must be my age.

  26. Disappointment s my overwhelming feeling.

We simply don’t play against opposition of this calibre often enough.

My criticism is not to the team today. It is to Celtic itself and whoever runs the stadium. Why did they make it so difficult to enter? I’ve not a scene like it at Parkhead since the 60s when people queued for hours to buy tickets for upcoming European ties. They seem to have made the turnstiles tighter too. You can just about fit in.

On top of that, 10 minutes before the game started, there was already no paper towels in the toilets and, of course, they weren’t replenished before half-time. Of course, there is still no hot water available.

Come on, Celtic. Basic hygene in this day and age. It reminds of the old toilet in the Jungle….We are better than this, surely.

  27. Boot in the metaphorical RS McColls eh bhoys…

Below is the team that beat Lazio in Italy in 2019 – along side last night line up.

We are in as good shape now as then – I think we are – but we’re younger and greener across the side.

Arguably too, Lazio are in worse shape now than then.

    Forster – Hart

    Elhamed – Johnston

    Jullien – Phillips

    Ajer – Scales

    Hayes – Taylor

    Brown – Hatate

    Christie – ORiley

    McGregor – McGregor

    Edouard – Furahashi

    Agree about the turnstiles

I don’t think the relative who uses our spare ticket if one is available could make it through the turnstiles.

For what it is worth, I thought Oh did pretty well in his cameo appearance last night..

A bit of jockwallaceball rather than Angeball in the last minute would have seen us getting a point.

  29. GGHS,

I don’t want to make a comment on any particular incident in the game. I do feel that Lazio were quite cynical; that the ref tolerated their antics makes me wonder if he was hand-picked by Dallas senior. (Is he still in that position at UEFA? How he got that job after his despicable behaviour at the SFA still astounds me. Who recommended him?)

  30. garygillespieshamstring on

    PCS

Definitely poor refereeing that seemed to favour the Italian team.

I felt he had an agenda but we should still have taken at least a point.

The ref in charge in Lisbon in 67 was suspect as an Italian team had never lost a game he refereed, but he couldn’t stop the lions.

  31. An Dun last night at 10.33

“ If a Lazio player makes that mistake, we don’t get the chance to work the ball out wide for the cross because they foul us.”

I think that’s what Brendan means when he says we need to be more ruthless. And I agree with him.

  32. Good afternoon, friends.

In case it helps, TNT (BT) have a half hour highlights programme of last night’s game at 2.30 this afternoon. I think it’s channel TNT3. You’re welcome :-0
