Matt Stewart on
He was thirteen years old. But tonight he was a man. He had his own ticket and he was about to witness
a game that would not only be his first European match at Celtic park, but would also claim a special
place on his mental-mantel-piece of mementos.
One-all, and the clock was ticking down to that shrillest of unwanted screeches, the ref’s final whistle and a winless disaster(there are no grey areas in the life of a thirteen year old).
One final raid perhaps…one last push…one hope and a prayer…
“We’re going to score” he said to everyone, anyone and no-one.
One corner….one swing of a boot… one head bursting like a missile from the sea of upeward gazing eyes….and everyone….EVERYONE went equally ballistic.
2-1 Celtic….the date 8th March 1967…the opponents Vojovodina. The man wae the golden foot…. Charlie Gallagher. The ICBM…..Billy McNeil.
52 years, 7 months and 16 days later and that young lad was a couple of months away from turning the same age as the number of the archetypal route that runs from Chicago to Santa Monica.
Tonight I (for that 13year old was indeed me) was now an old(er) man, no wiser but older. My season card (tickets are so 20th Century) now make a wee yellow light come on just to ensure that everyone knows that it belongs to an auld git (although to be fair there is a wee bit of satisfaction in expecting the long arm of a steward to reach out and demand for ID since “No way are you a day over 45 sir”!….till now he always seems to be busy as I am going through and doesn’t clock the amber warning).
I was also about to witness another game that would also lodge a special place in my mental-mantle-piece of mementos.
One-all again! The clock was ticking down once more to that teeth grinding final blast and a winless disaster (there are no grey ares – hair apart- in the life of putative 45 year olds .)
Then deja bleedin vu …yah feckin dancer!
One final raid! One last push! One hope and a prayer that came back to me from all those years ago.
“We’re going to score” I said to wee lhass beside me. She had chewed through her programme by now!
“From a corner? Don’t be daft? We never score from corners!” she stuttered.
“We will tonight….trust a forty five year old” I dangled for confirmation. She never replied, obviously a bit of page 24 had lodged in her teeth.
Then….Ball placed on the corner curve…a quick look up…one swing of a boot… one head bursting like a missile from the sea of upeward gazing eyes….and everyone….EVERYONE went equally ballistic.
2-1 Celtic….the date 24th October 2019…the opponents Lazio. The man wae the golden foot….. Ryan Christie. The ICBM ….Chris Jullien
She hugged me…the wee lhass did…. and said….”Your never 45….not a day over 40″. (Well I heard her…I did!)
History isn’t always about the repetition of errors, failure and lessons not learned.
Sometimes….sometimes especially when it’s steeped in the irrational devotion to a bloody football myth, legend, a fairytale called Celtic…there are histories that repeat themselves as smiles. We need to be shout a bit more about those…..that’s what will make today’s 13 year olds remember tonight and in another 52 years, 7 months and 16 days…..9th June 2071 to be precise…when I’ll probably look about 75…I’ll tell you all about it again.
We beat an Italian team when we were ourselves below par as an outfit. That shows this group have something about them.
I want to see Elhamed tried out at Centre back- he is a guy who rarely drops below a 7.5 level. I would like to get a more reliable centre to our defence.
Still buzzing about the great atmosphere- even Abellio running trains with closed carriages and others running empty through stations, not stopping, could not dampen this night. We have a right good chance of being in Europe still in 2020.
Still buzzing about tonight. I had lost all track of time and didn’t know that we were well into injury time when I saw the referee point to the tunnel.
Question…does anyone know the last time that we beat a team with a higher seeding in Europe
Beating a higher seeded team is one of my criteria to assess a manager’s performance. I don’t remember Brendan or Ronnie doing it so was Barca in 2012 the last time that we did it?

Great post Matt Stewart!
A result that didn’t look feasible at half time. But then; they hit the post, belief returns, Foster finds his concentration and loses his nervousness and Ryan Christie slides into overdrive and creates room for Eduoard! There were passages of play when Lazio seemed to have an extra man and everything bounced their way. it didn’t register with the Celtic team though. More harrying, more running, better passing, closer marking, louder singing and spreading of belief. And one strained neck as I stretched to head the ball with Chris Jullien!
Yes, if The Green Brigade pay it. Why should Celtic have to pay it, Not all Lazio fans are fascists. Not all Lazio employees are either. Celtic fans are going to Rome in two weeks. antagonising the bad element in their support puts Celtic fans in danger.
Rewatched the game. Knowing the score removes the anxiety.

HOT SMOKED @ 9:40 AM,
Yes, I thought that was the case in Scotland, not at all sure it is elsewhere – when KT was going to Arsenal and getting a “huge pay rise” I wondered about the average wage of a first team Gooner.
Now I’m going from (a hazy) memory here but there was a lot of info out there on Arsenal wages including the first team wage bill, which was circa 150M!??
THE BATTERED BUNNET @ 11:08 AM,
Thanks for the reply and info.
As said above I thought it might be our total wage bill. Had no idea really what percentage would be first team, other football related staff and what would be admin, general staffs’ wage bill.
Therefore the headline figure is very hard to interperet.
I’ve got to say your 13M figure was interesting, as you say, Celtic have a lot of inside functions that other Clubs could outsource.
It does suggest that there is a very large football operation outside the first team players, much larger than I’d have thought.
An aside – Your avg wage figure for Scotland @ 29K intrigued me. I live in an “affluent” part of the UK. The avg wage figure in the town is 27K, the avg. house price 350K – Crazy.

European football after Christmas is one of the reasons (I think) that we come back from winter break very strong … we then don’t have 2 games @ week and have knockout football to look forward too gives Neil more time on the training field between games and all players have a wee extra incentive to keep their place in the team… I know we aren’t there yet but Neil & the bhoys have gave themselves a right good chance, Rennes could be more or less out by the time we play them … European football is massive to keep & attract players to Celtic and us only a positive for the club.. tremendous result last night considering Ryan’s goal might have been first shot in target, hitting the post isn’t on target by all accounts :-)
