‘I always understood the our club was called Celtic to embrace all those suffering from poverty, ie the Irish and Scots.’

Well it’s a bit of a stretch to suggest that poverty was restricted to the Irish and the Scots, or that all Irish and Scots were poor.

The idea that the name was chosen to reflect any notion of the club being a joint Irish Scottish venture is a bit of latter day revisionism and there is no evidence to support the claim.

I think the name was more likely chosen to reflect the Irish background of the community from which the club came.

    Celtic Founder Brother Walfrid | Andrew Kerinsbrotherwalfridart.co.uk › brother-walfrid

    The Founder

And so it was in November 1887 that Celtic Football Club was founded, in St. Mary’s Church hall, Calton, in Glasgow.

The name Celtic was Brother Walfrid’s suggestion, to account for the team’s Catholic and Celtic roots.

Brother Walfrid deliberately avoided calling the new club Glasgow Hibernian, and chose Celtic due to its’ broader connotations. Some claim he referred to the club as ‘Keltic’ but that is unlikely given rules of Latin then and now, as opposed to Greek. The Celtic Society (Edinburgh) was formed in 1820. The Glasgow Celtic Society 1856. The name Glasgow Celtic was well established in Glasgow before Celtic were formed, as was the related Gaelic Society, (as in the Scottish Gael), and indeed the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup, (1879) is still played for in Shinty to this day. Celtic FC was formed primarily to help the Irish poor in the East End of Glasgow, but Walfrid did not need to revisit Ireland to find a name for the club.

    The END of May ?

That means my local wont be open until then as he doesnt have a Beer Garden.

Thats longer than I thought, so I might have to get taxis to some Pub to drink OUTside fron April 26th , as I cant walk too far at the moment.

This Covid crap is enough to turn a man to drink !

  8. A gift to be able to express like Mckenna

‘The establishment have made golden calves of dysfunctional German aristocrats, not because they hold them in genuine admiration, but because their existence sanctifies & reinforces the class system that underpins English society.’ @kmckenna63 on fire.

Are we to believe that the class system doesn’t underpin Scottish society?
