  1. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Ok, dust settled, clarity of optimism returning. Bullet points thus:

    1) we are ahead in the tie, if Malmo don’t score in the return, we are through.

    2) some key attacking players, who will be important in the type of game it will be next week, played very well: Griff, Armstrong and Forrest proved that they can be effective at this level.

    3) At 3-1, we would have been unsure of how to play in the 2nd leg, would probably have tried to defend, and I think we all know how a that would have turned out. We now know we will probably have to score to progress, which should lead to a more attacking set up, which suits us better.

    4) The mistakes that cost us last night were down to inexperience at this level. Well D’oh, most of our players are inexperienced at this level. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and see if last nights experience helps them in the 2nd game.

    5) Their players and manager revealed their own inexperience at this level by their actions and comments after the game. We can exploit this in the 2nd game. If we can score first their over-confidence may kill them.

    6) Commons will have a part to play. He has form at this level.

    7) The prize for the players is great. A chance to strut their stuff against the worlds best, after last years disappointment, should not be underestimated as a motivational factor.

    8) The crowd were fantastic last night, but due to our own inexperience of these types of game, I think some players, noticeably Boyata and GMS, were overawed, and their choices and form were affected. As long as the flare idiots cut it out (really – GTF, you damage our club), our superb away support can lift the team to the heights required to win this tie.

C’mon Sellick, we can do this!!!!

  2. Passing to opponents is not exclusive to defenders. Last night’s Stats show; SA, JoHan and Lustig (+our 3 subs) were more prone to giving the ball away than Boyota (see 2 goals conceded).

The damage was obviously done 2nd Half – our pass completion rate dropped 25% and our attempted passing by 33%. All 3 subs made a poor impact – questions should be asked about the make-up of the bench.

GK + Commons (slow but in a tight 0-0 he can unlock a defence – I understand) – however why; Mulgrew (slow), Efe (who needs best part of 45mins to steady himself) and Rogic (next to no time game experience) got the nod before Janko/Fischer – I fail to see.

Either are fast/robust and offered multiple options on our right (as it turned out); SA injured = swap JF to left – Lustig injured = drop to right-back. The 3 subs contributed nothing to controlling a 2 goal lead.

Changes and poor use/choice of subs have cost us 6 goals in the past 3 games; no impact, failure to retain possession and loss of late goals. Time RD had a rethink about this – don’t choose the next ‘best’ 6 players for the bench – select those (even from the Youth) that can provide like-for-like cover for any of the starting XI that might not last the 90 minutes.

Best XI needed on field Tuesday night and a bench to support them see it out.

Those passing stats support a comment made by Gordon Strachan on the highlights show last night( Ch33’s handy on these nights). He said Malmo had good players, not great players. They would give up possession to Celtic in Sweden and the Celts would have opportunities from that. He complimented Berget for taking two chances well but he didn’t expand on any expectation that we can be as clinical next week.

I thoroughly enjoyed the occasion last night. Celtic played well and I was proud of our efforts. The stupid crowd huddle was inappropriate but it didn’t sour a great European night.

Roll on next week. Our players have been challenged this week. It’s down to them now.

Do Malmo operate with a bigger budget than Celtic? Wasn’t the guy who scored their two goals somebody we decided we didn’t want?

    Regardless what happens…..stay on message….its always Lawwell’s fault…….zzzz

  5. Aberdeen sign Slough-born winger Josh Parker, 24, on loan from Red Star Belgrade. The former QPR, Oldham and Oxford player has joined the Dons until January. Parker joined the Serbian side in January following a spell in Slovenia.

Interesting signing. Know nothing about him but a change of tact from the Dandies. I wonder if Rooney is away. There have been pesky rumours.

I see a few posters blaming Scott Browns sideways header in the lead up to the Malmo goal. Just before that though, the ball landed at Izzy’s feet and he hit a weak, short clearance straight to a Malmo player when he could have cleared it out the park. The ball came straight back at SB who then had little time to react.

  7. I enjoyed the game last night, now it’s off to their midden with a goal lead, not all bad, I thought we bossed them most of the night, I notice the predicted ones are back, both Masty and I went for a few after the game last night, and more or less predicted what would be said on here today, the half empty brigade, the board haters, the PL haters and the RD see a told you mob, and of course the lowest form on here them rotten cowardly stinking lurking Huns.

So to my fellow glass half full CQNs I say Hail, Hail.

And the rest of you,, GIRFUYs.

  8. I really enjoyed being a CP last night. the final goal was a blow, but not a knock-out one.

In spells we played really well and they could not live with us.

We had the opportunity to go into the next game clear cut favourites, but a bit af naivity on our part left the tie on a knife edge.

I am still confident that we will survive this, and enter the group stages – but that is for another day.

We still have a game to win on Saturday, and I expect to see some fresh faces in the team for that.

It really is a great time to be a Celtic supporter, We all must savour and enjoy it.. Enough of the negativity
