When is a tug in the penalty box not a penalty? In Scotland it would seem to be when VAR doesn’t call it out. That would seem to be at the whim indulged in by those who man the screens, the likes of Dallas. Some of these chancers would appear to have a soft spot for the team that plays out of Ibrox, which seems to benefit inordinately from some rather odd decisions.

For Buckie and their fans a trip to Celtic park would be the trip of a lifetime.
I recall hailing a bag piping playing, green n white hooped guy on the Harlem bridge at mile 20 of the New York marathon in 2007. I shouted about the rangers losing 2-1 earlier that day at Tannidice. As I got closer I realised the hoops he was wearing were those of Buckie Thistle and not Celtic. He still gave me a thumbs up. It helped me through the last 6 miles.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2023-24*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #19 – CELTIC 1 MOTHERWELL 1 (TURNBULL)*
Good evening, friends.
I’m sure that most of us were happier at 2.00pm on Sunday than we were at 5.00pm on Saturday. It would be wrong to ignore our own below par performance, but to maintain our 8 point lead at the top made for an acceptable weekend.
Motherwell were the most anti-football team we have faced this season, time wasting from the 5th minute. It is of course their prerogative to get at least 9 men behind the ball and make it difficult for us to break through and I suppose we ought to have a Plan B and Plan C when our main approach doesn’t work. Having some shots from outside the box would be a start. Relying on my own memory here but I think we only had 4 shots on target in the game – 2 penalties and second half efforts from Turnbull and Scales (actually, the scales one was off target!).
During the first half in particular, our attacking move of choice seemed to be to get the ball wide to Yang on the right. He was up against one of Scotland’s quicker left backs and clearly didn’t fancy a race to the bye line, usually preferring to cut inside with little impact. Not his fault, of course, if the team are playing to instruction.
So ultimately it was definitely another 2 points dropped and not exactly the confidence boost that we could have done with before our travel to Rome.
We have now played 19 games, winning 11, drawing 4 and losing 4 with 38 goals scored and 21 conceded.
And now to the voting. Poor results invariably lead to a lot of us being reluctant to vote. By midnight on Saturday I had only received 11 emails. By noon on Sunday the number had risen to 18 with 5 more coming in whilst Aberdeen were playing. But thanks partly to Aberdeen drawing with Triggers Broom a healthy flow of emails during Sunday afternoon and evening resulted in a total of 57 supporting the competition this week.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Hart: 1
Ralston*: 16
Carter-Vickers*: 44
Scales: 47
Taylor: 5
McGregor: 14
Holm: 0
O’Riley: 7
Yang: 7
Kyogo: 0
Palma: 1
Oh*: 9
Turnbull: 16
Johnston, M: 1
Tilio: 1
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Motherwell are –
Scales – 5 points
Carter-Vickers – 4 points
Ralston and Turnbull – 3 points each
McGregor – 1 point
The overall positions after 19 games played are –
53 points – Scales
50 points – O’Riley
21 points – Carter-Vickers
19 points – Kyogo, McGregor and Palma
18 points – Maeda
16 points – Yang
11 points – Johnston A and Oh
9 points – Nawrocki and Turnbull
8 points – Hart
6 points – Lagerbielke and Taylor
5 points – Hatate and Ralston
4 points – Bain
1 point – Forrest and Holm
0 points – Abada, Bernabei, Bernardo, Haksabanovic, Iwata, Johnston M, Phillips, Starfelt, Tilio and Welsh
We now prepare for our penultimate Champions League group stage match, away to Lazio on Tuesday with a 5.45pm kick off time.

When I lived in Eastbourne, I noticed, in a Sunday `paper, `Keith` in the Highland League. I mentioned it to a Keith , a Sunday drinking pal from Wigan. The following week, he asked how they did that week. For fun, I took a team as well. I took Buckie Thistle. Buckie because of the drink and Thistle because I was Scottish.
We checked the results every week and had a wee competition. I only discovered years later that they played in Green and White hoop ( donated, apparently, by Celtic). Naturally, they became my Highland League team so I will be breaking my non-attendance at Cup Games for this one!
I was hoping we would get them so a very pleasant surprise as I watched the draw.

I think that every tug of a shirt should be a red card ,anywhere on the pitch .
In the penalty area it should be a pen and a red card .
There is no need for any player to clench his fist and grab another players shirt .
It is cheating .
Bring in that rule .
All shirt pulling would be ended in half a season .

WTAF does that actually mean I mused…
I was so struck by such an odd phrase I numbly picked up my moby and Googled a list of their previous chiefs; there’s certainly a plentiful and oddly odious assortment of chubbies, tubbies, ging-ers and mingers like wee Dick, Durrant, McCall, McDowall, Jimmy ‘2weeks’ Nicholl, Murty x2 to the Bealer etc etc.
I can only stab at what ‘looks like a proper Rangers manager…’ means (at least in the mind of a fanboy commentator): Big, looks like he’d be handy in a pub brawl, an Alpha type that can Lord it over wee-er guys.

However I’ll settle for all square.
We do need more quality and I hope we make a couple of significant improvements in January, however I feel we are not optimising our current team. We have a proven goalscorer who is not being utilised productively.
We are making chances but not taking them.
A big test awaits on Tuesday. Hopefully no mad rush of blood for Joe Hart. No stupid mad tackles in areas that don’t matter, full concentration circa the 45 minute mark and energy and substitution cleverness around the 65 minute mark.
It can be done.
I take what you are saying about the lack of atmosphere but let’s be honest we have seen a GB / club showdown coming.

To witness the reaction of Buckie Thistle players as their team came out of the hat against Celtic last night was a thing of joy, and I hope against hope that the game is played on Saturday afternoon January 20, and not hijacked by the SFA for a Sunday lunch.
According to their Wiki page, we went North to play Thistle during their Centenary in 1989, and earlier had played up to Buckie for a fundraiser for local St Peter’s RC founded in the early 1850s.
These are the games of miracle and wonder, not to be dismissed lightly, a chance for many supporters to get a ticket (even Saint Stivs) for a home Cup tie. Who knows maybe Buckie Thistle will get to wear their own Hoops on the day, might go down well. First game after the winter break, so should generate a bit of interest amongst our fans, especially younger supporters for whom it might be their first game.
