Shamrock Rovers Hooligans
I dont know how familiar you are with the League of Ireland but Shamrock Rovers have been hisrorically the most sucessful team in the league, they play in green and white hoops and I have supported them since I was 6 years of age,Dont go very often nowadays for a variety of reasons, mainly that they tend to play on Friday nights which just doesnt suit me.
Rovers always had an element that liked to cause trouble, some of these would only turn up for the game against Bohemians who became major rivals from the 70s onwards ( before that Bohemians were an amateur team and not a major rival on the pitch)
There is no political/cultural/class difference ,the only “reason” for the rivalry could be the North side/South side divide ( which in my opinion is total nonsense)
From the 90s onwards Rovers fans have been making alliances with fans based in the UK ( some fairly benign,I remember a group for Cardiff that used to come to Dublin for games and Charlton supporters helped out when Rovers were faced with losing their stadium in the late 80s)
However there were also contacts with hooligan groups ( including clowns from Millwall) with the sole purpose of coming to Dublin to fight .
All utter nonsene of course, silly young men with nothing better to do

Thanks for that. It was just the English connections I found puzzling. I had close enough experience of them in the seventies. Some of the Dublin clubs used to cause a bit of hassle from time to time when they came down to Cork – breaking a few windows around town and stuff!! I remember having to jump a dividing wall in Dalymount at the ’72 Cup final from a horde (it seemed like that at the time, probably only about 30 or 40) of Shels fans with implements e.g. umbrellas – hilarious I know but at the time we had to move smartly:)

Back from 2 weeks in Tenerife, managed to watch the Man city game on hotel TV with no commentary – definitely the way forward. Very nervous last 15 mins. Just watched the Southampton game – I see Mary’s Meals no longer on their shirts – pity.
Big couple of weeks ahead – 3 pts on Wednesday would be great.
All this talk of financial meltdown in Govan – i won’t hold my breath.

I have been incorrect on many occasions, but when Ronny was “managing” Young KT am sure this was mentioned, he never played a full 90mins for a good while and had his own drinks at side of the park (cue the Huns thinking he is drinking stuff he shouldn’t)
I think Ronny managed our KT and that Brendan guy is reaping the rewards :-)

I got a text message from Paul67 just under 2 weeks ago saying that a documentary crew were interested in doing a piece in St Mary’s about the founding of the Celtic Football and Athletic Company in 1887/88.
I spoke with Fr Tom and arranged access for the documentary director who nipped along the following day to look at it as a location. He was very impressed and the upshot was that a crew came along this afternoon to film the piece. It’s for a documentary about the history of football and will be presented by Alfie Allen, the TV and movie actor – Theon Greyjoy for Game of Thrones fans. He was joined by Dan Portman, the young Glasgow actor who plays Podrick Payne in Game of Thrones and who happens to be a massive Celtic fan!
So they filmed for about 3 hours inside and outside the Church and Alfie “interviewed” Dan about the birth of Celtic. Very nice people and they were genuinely taken by the beauty of the Church and the history of Celtic. One of the young guys from the crew was pretty familiar with Celtic and some of the players and when I showed him the An Gorta Mor badge he recognised it immediately: his parents were from Donegal and he remembers it from The Bridge of Sorrows.
We filled them in on the fact that Celtic fans are still feeding the poor and raising money for charity. They were astounded at the £173K raised for Palestine. I also told them how the Celtic family, via CQN, were still literally feeding school children by the recent donation to Mary’s Meals.
Bearing in mind that they have been researching footballing history they said that Celtic were absolutely unique and there was no club they knew of with such an ethos amongst it’s fanbase.
I did ask Alfie if he was going over Govan way; he laughed and said no. I told him it was just as well as they were only 4 years old. He laughed again!
It also gave me the pleasure of meeting our host, Paul67, who popped in with his family during the afternoon. A very nice young man indeed!

Just back from Ascot & having a bevy in a Tim shop nearby Central station. A very good friend from Dublin has Bohemians as his 2nd team(after Celtic) , he’s educated me on the rivalry. Local conflicts exist everywhere. Even in the rebel postcodes.
Just had a brilliant weekend visiting Ascot for the first time. Loads of butchers aprons around the place , but a pure class venue with great access to bars betting , & toilets.
The sing song back to London was potentially offensive to the locals. We along with others did not give a fcuk. Missed my Celtic & fitba fix yesterday but will catch up with my addiction this week.

It seems to have gone very quiet here in recent days Pete. Not sure why, hopefully it should pick up in the build up to the Borrussia game.

I did Pete, unless Celtic are playing I prefer to watch Rugby rather than the EPL.
Tremendous win for Connacht, pure grit.
I always watch the Munster games and must admit I have been a bit critical of Axel as a Coach,
Really feel guilty about that now. The cause of death has not been released but as always there have been rumours.
I sincerely hope for the Family’s sake that it is natural causes and that the obvious stress that he seemed to be under was not a factor.
