‘You want to play pretty, WINNING foootball? – you do it the Salzburg way, with intensity and selfless movement. I still can’t name a Salzburg individual ‘superstar’ but can damn sure wax lyrical about their team function – exactly how we need to be if we want to be taken seriously in Europe.’

A concerning number of instances where we were weak in the tackle and/or hesitated to go in for the ball in a 50/50.

Combined with the careless passing there is much to improve on.

  3. Well, it’s definitely a Carlsberg Friday! Papers and Hun sites on meltdown because we scraped through (winning 2 home and 1 away game) whilst the Huns were very unfortunate (winning 1 and drawing 3). 9 points v 6 points. It made me happy, then it got better.

I have just got delivery of a new car form my grandson who is learning; I changed it from a 3 year old Fiesta and got a new Polo. The insurance DROPPED by £55 a month! Fantastic news! More than pays from my season ticket to watch European football after Christmas! ????????

Spot on; they play the way that we aspire to. A team of very accomplished player playing to more than the sum of their parts.

If we can gradually bring in players in of the standard they have (they don’t cost too much in relative terms) to compliment Tierney, Edouard, McGregor, Christie, Forrest and Rogic it will be up to Rodgers to merge them into a team that can play to the level required to be a decent European team.

If we can get a result in the round of 32 then Scotland will go ahead of Serbia in the Uefa co-efficient (from 26th to 19th) and that will help with our co-efficient next season. It also starts us climbing the ladder towards reducing the number of qualifying stages and nearer to automatic entry to the Champions League. Certainly moving in the right direction!

anybody know how draw works for next round.is it first team out at home first or what??????

    ______________________

Seeded teams play at home first. We’re unseeded.

I’m really hoping we get one of the weaker teams and can compete against them. Salzburg were excellent and we couldn’t get near them. Can we aspire to get to this sort of level?

I’m not sure. I know they’re heavily backed by Red Bull, but I don’t think there was a great outlay spent on putting their team together.

I was of the impression that is not even a remote possibility for the Champions of Scotland going forward? Would love to be wrong…

Yes, there is a way to go but Scotland have moved from 26th to 19th in 1 season so far. With another 2 places, we miss 1 qualifying stage in CL; a further 3 takes out another qualifying stage. So far it has removed 1 qualifying stage in the EL and another 2 places reduces EL by a further qualifying stage.

So with a few decent runs (and continued improvement from the national team) we could find ourselves moving up over the next few seasons. It’s unlikely we will get to automatic entry (top 10) but getting to 3rd or 4th qualifying stage will help significantly! It will also mean we will have a far better chance of seeding in these competition which (allegedly) makes qualification from Group Stages easier.

  8. Celtic through on 9 points.

Across all the groups the average number of points for a second placed team was 9.8. This is skewed a bit by Sporting Lisbon getting 13 and Krasnodar 12

So,a team getting 9 points would most likely qualify.

We won the 3 games we deserved to win and lost the 3 we deserved to lose.

    9 well earned points.

Losing twice to an excellent Salzburg team was no surprise and no disgrace, nor was losing away to Leipzig.

I know it’s hard to get away from the fact we weren’t good last night and got through under dramatic circumstances, but I believe you need to look at the big picture in these “mini leagues” and overall I think we did very well to qualify from a very tough group.

Delighted we made the 32 – legitimately by our overall position in the mini-league.

Wonder if celticbynumbers will analyse that 1st half passing performance as our poorest when faced with a team of the same net value? https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/red-bull-salzburg/startseite/verein/409

    ====

A very tough watch and hard to fathom the number of unforced errors. We are far better than we showed last night.

But its a recurring theme in European matches, despite the qualification.

Yeah, the ‘Champions route’ being retained was seen as a victory but there are fewer places as far as I know so difficulty increases.

I believe Red Star Belgrade this season were the first team to qualify for the group stage having negotiated 4 qualfiying rounds, so that proves the odds are stacked against us at the moment.

Yes; Optrex needed, but agree we’re capable of more.

Not just players who must improve at this level; coaches too. In BR I trust.

    QUADROPHENIAN on 14TH DECEMBER 2018 10:31 AM

Yes, thats the frustrating thing. Every single one of us knows we are better than we showed last night, as well as away to Leipzig, Salzburg and AEK.

Basic ball retention, concentration and decision making, and we’d be at Salzburgs level.

  13. RED STAR BELGRADE . ?

Napoli blogs were in meltdown after Red Star Belgrade 0-Napoli 0. A very typical Napoli performance . Way better than Red Star . 75 % possession and missed a barrowload.. Many fans opined that it was a performance that would see Napoli in the Europa League . They were right !!!

  14. Seeded teams play away first.

The perceived advantage being to have the home game in the 2nd leg.

thanks for info.cost of flights for 14th feb to SEVILLE £65 next week £95.

no not predicting SEVILLE but would be good to go back.

  16. There are 2 Serie A teams in the last 32 .

Napoli who got 9 points in their CL group

Inter who got 8 points in their CL group .

Given a choice between those 2 – I’d prefer Inter– prone to playing as though they have just met each other on the pitch.

  17. My friends in Celtic,

What a rollercoaster. Despair to absolute joy in the flick of a refresh icon.

Prior to a ball being kicked, how many of us honestly thought we would qualify from this group.?

Got 9 points and rightfully qualified. We got a wee bit of luck that has previously evaded us. BR has given us luck, a quality so valued which money cannot buy. ( This is not hindsight, been saying it since BR arrived )

European nights define Celtic: The atmosphere, the anticipation and the camaraderie.

HH to all, the journey continues.

PS : Glad my medical was last week, blood pressure must surely be through the roof now.

  18. Why were we SO far off the pace last night??? As others have said we are really not that bad -did the whole team just freeze? The Salzburg team looked as if they had all comsumed a load of extra strong Red Bull. And did the over-the-top Green Brigade “welcome” for Celtic freaked them out in some way??

  19. Bamboo,

Not for the first time did we freeze. A few of us on here advocate some sports psychology.

That’s a hard one to answer, but I’ll have a go, really good, efficient, hardworking team we played last night. However, no matter the opposition we should always be able to tackle, pass to a team mate 10 feet away etc. I thought that our midfield was overrun and possibly overawed at times, too many missed, didn’t make tackles and when they did have the ball were all desperate to get rid of it! I thought Broony brought some bite, presence and calmness to it all. It wasn’t helped by the fact that we lost Lustig who was replaced by a player who has been out for months, playing in an unfamiliar position and inexperienced.

When was the last time that we gained in Europe from someone else doing us a favour? How many times have we gone out on goal difference, head to head etc. We were lucky but we made our own luck by wining 3 games.

  24. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Salzburg did to us what we do to most teams domestically.

They played at a pace and intensity that took us out of our comfort zone.

We didn’t have that extra time on the ball that we are used to, which forced us into careless passing and losing possession.

Cap doffed to a superior and fitter team.

  25. OOPS –

there are 3 ( not the previously stated 2) Serie A teams in the last 32 .

I forgot about Lazio . — They are in Celtic’s side of the draw !

  26. We — manager / squad / support — had the Fear last night.

Full on, no holds barred, shameless feart — we were scared of their team bus.

We must now have a new corporate sponsor — big in wallpaper — Timorous Beasties.

Our play was pathetic — over coached and under motivated.

Shows how much work needs to be done.

  28. One thing about last night’s performance is that is was so bad we can rule out a lack of talent.

It was cartoon level that if played for laughs HB would have been proud off never mind WB or WD.

We were the team that could not pass straight, shoot straight or run straight.

Huge job required to get the squad ready to play in such a big EU game.

We need to move beyond being flat track SPL bullies.

RBS are well ahead in their league but still had the attitude to be competitive in EU.

I fear that we do not have enough leadership or experience in the squad.

One of the issues of the buy young / sell dear business model.

  29. I reckon we need 3 Quality players with pace,we need a Right back, another midfielder, also another Striker, was never convinced with Edourd, also another Goalkeeper, wouldn’t go amiss.
