  1. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

My dad is 89. His all time favourite was Malcolm McDonald.

He loved Jinky and Bobby Murdoch but he thought Jimmy Delaney was better than Jinky and Willie Fernie was better than Bobby.

He never liked Bobby Evans due to him getting so many Scotland caps when we had, in his mind, better Scottish players playing for us, who rarely got capped.

My top five in particular order,

    Danny

    Henrik

    The Maestro

    Lubo

    Tommy

Five I was too young to appreciate

    Davie Hay

    George Connolly

    Bobby Murdoch

    Stevie Murray

Harry Hood ( mainly as the Harry Hood had the best song the fans sung for a player)

  2. Captain Beefheart on

Larsson would get a place in our best side. I haven’t seen better at Celtic Park.

Mad Paulo, mad Boruc, Polish Jackie and Lubo were other personal favourites.

  3. cliftonville celt from belfast on

Paul McStay was in my house when I was a kid my da had convinced players to come over for a function and brought the players home until they left for the function

I came into the house seen Paul McStay & Roy Aitken, burst into tears and ran away !

Still regret it although I was only 8 or 9

  4. Gerry

When he was playing as sweeper he was magnificent.

I can remember being at the front of the Jungle as we attacked the Celtic end – wee Jinky was at outside right and time after time George could pick him out with passes from 30-40 yards away that would arrive perfectly for Jinky to move forward. All the time making it look so easy – that’s why he was the guy that I wanted to be. I was at the 1973 Cup Final where we were robbed by the ref( like that’s never happened before!) George equalised at 2-2 with a penalty- Greig stopped a Dixie effort on the line – no sending off in those days BTW- usual delaying tactics from the Huns – but George just waited – ice cool as ever and sent the keeper the wrong way! Then he picked out wee Jinky who I swear chipped a Hun and went on to score – only to be given Offside!!!!

To think that any other player could have been in the Lisbon team is a practical impossibility, obviously.

Therefore, there is no other player worthy of displacing those twelve men who represented us on that day.

They are sacrosanct in the real and imaginary world, inhibited by many on here!,

  6. Simpson. Craig. Gemmell. Murdoch. McNeill. Clark. Johnstone. Wallace Chalmers Auld Lennox Connelly Hay Dalglish McGrain McStay Nicholas Mclair Sutton Larsson.

    I hear you good stuff

Paul McStay could ply in any team he wanted, thankfully he stayed with us even when we weren’t that good

“There is NO EVIDENCE to suggest Celtic will do well in the Europa League….

    Absolutely none……”

100% correct. You, sir, are an empiricist and scientist practitioner of the highest order.

Of course, the corollary holds just as well too. There is NO EVIDENCE to suggest Celtic will do badly in the Europa League…Absolutely none…”

There is, of course, a wee bit of evidence that Liverpool will struggle with bottom half EPL teams – shame that!

  11. Gerryfaethebrig on

    Croppybhoy….

I never said hi but my father was adamant he was the best he witnessed, sort of good enough for me

  12. Croppybhoy

My first SC final/ Deidco game. . . Jinky was never offside, I could see that from 100 yards behind him through a slight gap in the shoulders in front of me. I’ll never forget Kenny’s cracking opening goal, or Jaws’ incredible attempt at missing from 18 inches.

Didn’t Big Caesar hold up 8 fingers defiantly when picking up his medal at the end? Or did I imagine that?

  13. The best five players I’ve seen.

Tully. He converted me to supporting Celtic when I seen him scoring the two corners into goals,I said to my brother,I’m going to support celtic from now on. you couldn’t really pick any player from the Jock Stein era as they played as a team.but if I had to pick one it would be Jinky, but they were a team. Lubo, Hendrik, and if I had had the pleasure of watching him James McGrory would be the main man.

  14. Gerryfaethebrig on

I shouldn’t bite but Viduka was a total imposter, if you are at the wind up at least try and pick better targets you have many better that Marko V

  15. My best Celtic X1 (players seen)

I will be t the Blane Valley soon to ask you brother who you supported first !

Croppybhoy, the UNICEF game against Benfica at Celtic Park in December 1974.

George played passes, as you described, to Jimmy at least three times, perfect for jimmy, in the above game.

George along with Brian McLauglin , would and should have been , two of our greatest players.

I was at the game with my dadagainst Clyde when that big runt, Willie McVey, caught Brian with what would be a straight red card tackle.

  19. Gerryfaethebrig

Not many players who conjure up an instant image of a passage of play in one particular game when their name is mentioned, but say McStay, and I see that pass inside the Deidco full-back to Chris Morris.

Anybody got a similar image when Stevie Chalmers’ name is mentioned??

  20. Beatbhoy

    Think that you are correct!

It was a special anniversary cup final – 100 year since the first had been held but not the 100th due to the wars. Some minor royal turn up and since it was also 100 years of the Huns – the deck was definitely stacked against us!

Crap horrible day – weather wise – remember almost continual warfare all the way back in to the city centre!

Old school Tims didn’t take losing lying down!

Days like that made them dying in 2012 so much sweeter!

To think that there just might be, right here in bonny Scotchland, another George Connolly destined to wear the hoops in the not too distant future.

We produced them once upon a time. Surely we’re due for another?

  22. Gerryfaethebrig on

I mentioned that pass a few days ago KevJ confirmed it was McAvennie on the end of CHris Morris’s pass, the Maeateo was way above this ,evel, when he was meant to leave to go to Udinese I was gutted, when he stayed I was over the moon, for me, p,ayers that sty when we are rubbish are a hundred times better than the ones who win the trophies !

  23. Does anyone remember what door Fergus told Tommy to leave from?

Was anyone there when Tommy left from the front door?

    I was…….

    God bless Tommy Burns

    Wits

Exactly right re the replays. Heard it mentioned today that GAA stand to make €3 m from the Dublin/Mayo replay. For obvious reasons a Metropolitans football replay is particularly lucrative.

    Beatbhoy

I’m with you on that selection with Lubo “the gift from Ghod” included somewhere.
