Today, in extra time we saw a spirt, a sense of adventure that’s been muted for too long this season.
Of today’s starting line-up I’d suggest the following get pass marks for their teamwork, progressive play and indomitable spirit.
Sinisalo – Ralston – Tierney – Hyunjun Yang – Nygren (borderline though today) – Maeda (a player reborn today) – Iheanacho – Forrest.
The remainder of the season is going to be a dogfight, so we need players of McGregor’s proven calibre, to regain his bravery (and not give away so many free kicks) , and play with an attacking assurity that spreads to those around him to believe in themselves, and return to Celtic’s overwhelming attacking style that our opponents can’t compte with.
What we need is a confident team that won’t be derailed by questionable refereeing/linemen/VAR decisions or the media from their target of defying the odds and winning the league and cup double.
We can dream.

More of the same from this schizophrenic Celtic team today: first half was decent with a couple of goals that could easily have been more, before a half-time team talk that turned the game upside down. Second half lacked control or purpose, and was entirely absent of quality. The Saints goal rattled us, and they looked more likely as time went on. The subs initially made little or no impact, if anything, we looked even less confident and continued to play on the back foot, while largely out of possession. It was of no surprise when Saints increasing pressure ultimately led to their equalizer – a fine strike, though, it was as preventable as it was predictable.
The extra time chaos is beyond reasonable explanation – from nowhere, there appeared some energy and belief, which resulted in the most bizarre 4-goal 6-minute spell. WTF!?!?!?
Jamesie is a pure legend, and his composure and drive delivered a ball to Kelechi, who is beyond doubt the best natural finisher that we have. Maeda was for most of the game a “new man”, and what a relief it must be that he grabbed a goal! I agree with others regarding our best starting forward line, and if we persist with 4-3-3, I’d really like to see MON select Daizen, Kelechi and Jamesie. I’d take whatever minutes they can give us.
The midfield is a real worry. There is no obvious first choice 3, and we never seem to get the 3 we play to gel and exert sustained consistent control against lesser quality opposition. In possession we can be slow and ponderous, but more concerning is how passive we are out of possession. Physicality and energy is a problem, but even the system and patterns do not seem comfortable or well understood. CalMac operating as a deep midfielder, playing sideways passes and pointing all over the field is painful to watch. As captain, he plays in a role which inevitably compares him to recent greats like Lennon and Brown, but he does not have the same physical attributes as those two – no mean streak, no snap or bite in the tackle. This is compounded by the absence of these traits in his fellow midfielders. Just consider the players offering some “dig” alongside Lennie and Brown over the years; Lambert, Petrov, Robson, Hartley, Bitton, Kayal, Ledley and Wanyama!
The defense has at points this season performed well even with all of the forced changes. In most games I would suggest that it is the lack of protection from our midfield that exposes our defense in the most critical areas, and individual errors result, or a collective failure to clear hopeful balls into the danger area. Once under pressure, there is a nervousness which grows, and we can be so fragile. It appears like a distinct lack of familiarity and trust.
Just to give the defence some defense, these appearance and minutes stats give some interesting perspective;
GK – KS 39 / 3,570′ – VS 14 / 1,350′
LB – KT 37 / 3,425′ – MS 22 / 910′
RB – AJ 5 / 329′ – AR 31 / 1,921′ – JA 14 / 1,193′ – CD 28 / 1,485′
CB – CCV 13 / 1,200′ – LS 50 / 4,257′ – AT 35 / 3,033′ – SW 2 / 75′ – DM 15 /831′ – BA 13 / 939′
TIMBHOY163 – agree that Tierney is not the player he was. I’m surprised that Scratchy is not getting more minutes, either as a sub or starter.
MURDOCHBHOY – that “spirit and sense of adventure” appeared from nowhere. It gives hope, but the question will remain whether we can flick that switch on demand.
B2B1/2F – you are absolutely correct that are remaining fixtures get progressively tougher.

First of all excellent contribution from Back to Basics – Glass Half Full on 19th April 2026 6:44 pm, pretty much saw it the way I did including the board haters with their DD GTF after the baddies equalised in what was an excellent strike as well as how they had shot their bolt in that second half to gain parity before collapsing in extra time, so much for how poorly coached we are tae.
Now I have been following Celtic for nigh on 74 years now, well that’s as far back as I can recall my da taking me up in the oul Vale of Leven CSC bus as they were all singing about Patsy Gallacher and Andy McAtee, and I have seen some contentious personnel in that period including board members, managers, coaches, players etc including Bob Kelly who in all fairness Jock rescued his career, Desmond White who Davie Hay once said of him that everything he did was in his opinion for the best of the cub, both Bob and Desmond were CA’s so that might be how they both felt and thought at the time.
Sean Fallon who it was said that he only got a game because he walked Bob Kelly’s dug every morning ffs, Alec Byrne mockingly christened as Alice and Frank Brogan who its thought was chased out of parkheid for running away fae the hun thug shearer, both were criticised for being too faint hearted yet on their game were Celtic class, Feed the Bear Big Yogi who had his critics tae but was a star on his day.
Charlie Gallagher who my high school maths teacher claimed was the worst player at parkheid and yet 2 years after telling us this I bet he was also greetin on the slopes of the national stadium as his thunderbolt shot crashed off the bar for a waiting wee ten thirty to nod home for the first equaliser and his corner enabled Big Billy tae nod home the winner.
Tom Callaghan who it was alleged was Jock’s mole in the dressing room wtf as if Jock needed a mole while Big Billy was there, there have been numerous others like NFL whose late da vowed NEVER to watch the Celts again after seeing him booed for passing the ball back, the same Lenny who I widnae have given hoose room tae after he bailed out on us when Ronny was thrust upon him, btw I agreed on the move to bring Ronny in as assistant manger which hopefully would provide a pathway for our youngsters to break through, but was also glad when he agreed to succeed BR after he walked out on us.
Bu in all those years I have NEVER EVER saw anyone, and there are those that I have forgotten, being so divisive than the current Al Qadsiah FC head coach, yes as Back to Basics said, “Brendan Rodgers did a lot of great things while at Celtic” of course he did in his almost 5 seasons during his two stints with us, but its in the manner of how he left that causes me grief and I’m NOT alone here but unlike Lenny who I forgave as he came back got us a treble and but for ravages of Covid might have got us the dreaded 10 and has always been in our camp.
So its best if at least until the end of this season when hopefully Calmac is holding the SC high we refrain from discussing him whether good bad or ugly and get behind the Bhoys.

Thanks to the 2 Bhoys who told me to keep posting on here ,its not nice being called a clown ,i called out St Stives a few years ago ,it was in bad taste,i apoligised to him ,out of that i try to be a decent Celtic Supporter ,
