That was a very poor , uninspired Celtic performance against an admittedly superior team. We shouldn’t be relying on players like Izzy at this level but unfortunately even our best players like Calmac had a seriously off night.

We didn’t look as though we believed we could beat them , not the first time we’ve shown that mental fragility in Europe.

  2. What is the Stars on

Unforced errors in passing cost us in Europe regularly .Of course its easy to say “unforced”.The reality is against better quality opposition passes are more likely to be “read” and intercepted

  3. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

Fannying about at the back usually works for us domestically.

When you`re two down in Europe , it is simply frustrating to watch and I`ll bet to play .

I feel it is harsh to pick on any individual .

This was a team loss and perhaps a coaching loss .

  4. Liked Scott McDonald as a player but I bet he was hard to listen to in the dressing room – legit criticism is grand but he’s just a bit of a morning faced so and so.

Their system was like a well oiled machine, rarely you saw their players out of position at any point on the park. Wonderful to watch and also to see how much we have to do as a team with lesser quality players:((

That being said we didn’t do much right here tonight…

    Disappointing..

  6. Looking at this again, Jozo killed us with the first goal, Izzy needs to stand off a bit because his pace has gone. Jozo stops without seeing what else was behind him.

  7. Starry, as a neutral, it’s great to watch. A well coached team with everyone knowing their role. The subs came on and slotted in seamlessly.

any scottish living in oz are torn faced superior gits. look at the shit they post on here.

  9. Some good pertinent points made by posters in regards to tactics and resources however bhoys a footballer employed by Celtic FC, or indeed any professional footballer, should be capable of doing the simple things a footballer is required to do – IE being able to pass the ball when under no pressure, or putting a team mate under pressure when there is no need to do so. We used an acronym In the oil industry – KISS – keep it simple stupid.

He’s spot on though, and he sounds like he cares

  11. I tend to never crit the players or the manager, but Brendan really has to have a look at himself re europe, we are up against better players yet he still goes gung ho and it just disny work.

In his after match conference he will say we will learn from this, but we won’t, it’s the same every time.

If only Pedro had bought better players……

  12. Villareal, 2nd bottom of La Liga, beat Sporting Lisbon in Lisbon. Seville beat Lazio away too. Real Bettis drew 3-3 with Rennes, also away from home. Each of those teams are miles off the pace of Barca, Real and Atletico Madrid.

Spanish football is light years ahead of the SPFL.

  13. Izzy geeting it in the neck..cover for our proper left back.

Calmac gave cheap possession at first,

    R Christie totally posted missing.

We missed the much maligned Ntcham and the irreplaceable Rogic

  14. ? on

    And what subs!

A 40 mil guy and a guy who’s won the EL four times..

    Different world.

We had no midfield again tonight..

Chris Sutton said three or four times tonight how streetwise Valencia were, Celtic need a hard as nails, hard tackling, quality passing midfielder and have done for years.

Getting him to play in Scotland tho’ that’s a whole over debate:))

    KTF,

Izzy is the one who can see the whole picture in front of him. Jozo played the guy offside clearly, it was Izzy’s inability to read the situation and try and get in line with Jozo that led to situation.

He tried to play offside after it was too late, hence his man being unmarked and tapping the ball in at the back post.

  16. A performance worryingly lacking in confidence. We’ve seen it too many times, the players see they’re up against a team that’s technically better than them and their bottle goes. We stop moving and stop looking for the ball

  17. There is a tiresome debate that continues regards to Scott Brown.

I think the guy has been exceptional through the years. He will forever be a legend.

But no resurgence vs St Mirren n St Johnstone, should deflect from the fact, he is past his sell by date. Without a doubt.

It is time to look beyond him. And that change should be happening now.

As for Izzy. Not even going to go there. He would genuinely struggle to get the left back jersey in a good amateur team.

    Aye, right! ???

Hayes would have been murdered out there tonight. He’s good going forward in Scotland but suspect defending, but he gets away with it. Defending against Valencia tonight would have been a disaster. Not a criticism as a player (before the Dubs start) but just an assessment of him as a left back. He isn’t one.

Had you said drop McGregor back I could probably agreed but it would have left us short in the middle of the park. Even take him off and bring Ajer into a 3 would have been a better shout but I still think that would have wreaked us with their swift breaking.

The bottom line is that in Europe we are as short at LB as we are ath RB.

  19. The stuff of nightmares.

We are are worse in Europe than the Maybot and that is saying something.

Shameful performance — but who will care?

DD — the Irish Raj — has money in the bank.

PL — useless / 2nd rate property bean counter — has his bonus.

We are now embarrassing the history of the club with performances like that.

  20. Deniabhoy

How does La Liga stock up against the likes of the Bundesliga, EPL and Serie A?

In terms of depth and quality of games.

  21. we had a transfer window for this game needed

    1. goal scorer striker we had the money

2.center half we had the money

we gave CEO nearly 3m of the money for the above

result was tonight, sure Valencia are streets ahead of us, but we PL did not even try to have the 2 important payers in place

once again wool over eyes CSC

  22. Brendan on.

Disappointed. Made a good start. Have to concentrate and put pressure on ourselves.

Made too many mistakes. They can punish you.

    Disappointing in the end.

Do tell what European History you refer to…with the exception of a few glorious years, this is our lot in Europe.

European football after Xmas was Nirvana before MON.

  24. We become a little bit safe because of the number of mistakes we made first half.

    Big challenge next week.

Playing out back we have ball away cheaply.

Too many mistakes at this level.

  25. BR sweating in his interview…the body language experts on here would think he was nervous about his job…ffs did he just say “on the level”…that makes him a mason…caught fair and square ;-))

    H.H.

  26. Much has been said about Burke’s pace n power.

    That’s fine

But he’s not a centre forward.

Secondly… guys like Burke n Christie who have lots of energy and lots of running.

Do you know what would be better for them…. just to simply stand still.

I remember when Rudd Ghullit took over Chelsea… he was asked about John Spencer. He said he made him a better player, by telling him to run less, and stand in a position more

  27. glendalystonsils on

They were Celtic tonight , to our St Johnstone.

I get all that , in terms of the money and the gulf between the two leagues . I just wish we could raise our game in Europe the way the St.Johnstone’s of the SPFL do when they play us. At least go down fighting . At least show that we do have some qualities even if the opposition have more.

  28. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

BR needs to reassess the approach in Europe. There is no point in having the majority of possession when it provides no end product or threat to the opposition, but instead results in us losing it on our half way line or final third and then facing a team of quality attacking players streaming forward into our box. It happened on multiple occasions tonight.

How often were Valencia caught short at the back or facing man on man coverage while running back to their goal? Our approach is not representative of our European standing.

Neil Lennon (with an inferior team) managed two wins against Spartak, a home win and draw against Barca and Benfica respectively and two defeats by a one goal margin in the group stage of the CL.

We should be competing better at this level than we currently are.
