A wee bit here from the Guardian on Spanish club strength (and this was written just before Madrid won the 2018 final:
““Atlético Madrid’s win against Marseille in the Europa League final means eight of the last nine major European finals have been won by Spanish teams – and Real Madrid could make that nine out of 10,” begins Claire Miller. “Has one country ever dominated European football like this before?”
The Premier League marketing department may have trademarked the phrase “best league in the world”, but not even they have the brass neck to claim it is the strongest. La Liga has dominated European competition throughout the 2000s, and especially in the last five years.
Since the 2012-13 season, when Bayern Munich and Chelsea won the Champions League and Europa League respectively, it has been almost all La Liga. Real Madrid have won three of the last four Champions Leagues, with Barcelona winning the other in 2015. Sevilla won three consecutive Europa Leagues from 2014, while Atlético beat Marseille last week. The only non-Spanish team to win a European trophy in that time is Manchester United, who put Ajax to sleep in last year’s Europa League final.
What’s the lowest a team has finished while winning the Champions League?
There have been some other periods of dominance in the 53 years of European competition. For this purpose we have included the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, as it was effectively the Uefa Cup by another name. But we’re not giving time of day to the Super Cup or Intertoto Cup, for obvious reasons.
If Real Madrid win on Saturday, it will be Spain’s fifth consecutive Champions League. It would be quite a feat given that, before that streak started in 2014, no country – never mind a team – had retained the title since Milan/Italy in 1990.”

Hugely disappointing, especially after our recent form but as good as the opposition was, it doesn’t excuse us giving the ball away so easily and so often.
Anyway, were not a big fish in a small pond, rather a whale in a puddle.
It’s obvious the step up in opposition class on nights like this is challenging for our good players. They are good and would be much better if they had this quality of opposition week in week out like Valencia have domestically.

The onus is on Izzy for me. He can see it all in front on him. In the end he neither played the man offside nor tracked the run. He was the last Celtic defender to get back in the box and his man was in yards of free space.
Izzy steps up after the ball has been played. I’ve seen less lag in football streams than in Izzy’s decision making for that goal.
Centre backs need to be aware but just as much as full backs do as well.

Celtic supporters en masse got carried away after successive wins against cannon fodder opposition. Tonight was always going to be a huge step up in quality. I thought Valencia were a very competent outfit, Tactically very good, their pressing was top class and they forced us into error after error until we could no longer cope. Our defensive frailties were exposed, particularly at left back as Izzy endured a torrid evening. Brown was really poor in midfield, being particularly carless in possession. They bossed the midfield, were solid at the back and exposed our mistakes in defence. They were better team all round and they outclassed us.
The honest truth is that we failed the first real test since Ibrox. The opposition will get easier but question marks remain.

Someone mentioned that Sutton said that Valencia need European football to pay off debt. It just shows you the difference in approach. They are putting far more money into their team as a percentage of earnings than Celtic are.
We are sitting with around £50m in the bank; how many teams hold roughly 60% of their turnover as cash in the bank?
I don’t want Celtic to take the Valencia approach and have significant debt but there is a happy medium and, at present, our approach is not that happy medium.

Tippy tappy building from the back football against decent opposition only works if you have players capable of close control and the ability to receive and pass a ball under pressure. On tonight’s showing we clearly do not have many that fall in to that category in our current squad. Harsh but given the performance this evening sadly true.

This is why I turned off after 2nd goal. Sideways, backwards sideways, until they lost possession.
Cannot compete outside Scottish competition because lawwell won’t invest in decent centre backs.
Defence will always hold the team back because one single striker upfront can’t score even one against decent opposition.
