Celtic: We don’t need no stinkin’ Rangers

235

I may have slightly embellished our chief exec with my headline but that’s about the measure of Peter Lawwell’s message this afternoon.  He told the BBC, “We don’t rely on any other club. We are in a decent position, we’re very strong.

“We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan and a robustness hopefully that will take us through that.

“Times are pretty tough. I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to talk about any individual club, these things are hypothetical at the moment.

“I think we’ve a view, a very strong view on certain circumstances but we’ll only share that at the right time.”

He said, contemplating a plate of ice cream and jelly after lunch.  He really should order 60,000 small tubs of both for our last home game.

Thanks and congratulations to everyone who participated in the CQN Music Quiz in aid of the Vanessa Riddle Appeal on Saturday night.  The room was packed, not for the first time at a CQN Quiz, extra seats had to be commandeered from elsewhere, and a great night was had by all.

£492.53 was raised on the night on top of £800 from the purchase of online tickets and donations.  Special thanks to Frank O’Hagan – new album available here – who provided musical entertainment at the end of the quiz.  Thanks also to the Stornoway Celts, who provided prizes, as well as Celticrollercoaster and Tony Warrington, for selling badges and CQN Magazines respectively to aid funds.

The night would not have happened without the enormous preparation and work by Taggsybhoy, aided on the night by Mrs Taggsybhoy and young Joe – thank you.  This evening Taggsybhoy will put a signed Celtic top donated by Penfold onto eBay to bring the week’s efforts to a close.  I’ll let you know when it’s live.

The only pace that we can make profit is within Europe. Anyone that argues that removing the two biggest obstacles to qualifying for European competition is bad for our future. Has not done their homework or has a hidden agenda and cannot be taken seriously.

    Paul67 –

Peter Lawwell’s comments are extremely welcome as the growing myth regarding Scottish football ‘needing’ a club that has used underhand means to gain advantage continues to grow.

The fact that the people propagating this rubbish were mocking the very idea they would ever have to discuss the topic as recently as a few months ago is lost on none of us.

  5. Battered Bunnet, you are doing sterling work, thank you.

RogueLeader, I’ve decided not to quote from Blazing Saddles, just in case….

ASonOfDan, timing is important, I hope things roll on until April, but I’ve no proper information on timing.

RAMT, here is the real truth of the matter……

If you are in the media, and on this one and only occasion, I will include Celtic Quick News in this category, Rangers is good for business. Your income might depend on it, the size of your income will depend on it.

Without Rangers, fewer Celtic fans will go to Celtic Park (compare Rangers game attendances with other games, including Euro games), fewer people will read CQN or CQN Magazine, fewer people will buy and advertise in newspapers or on radio.

Celtic will deal with this, other clubs should learn to do the same. CQN will flourish as a smaller community. Most of the rest of the media will fight for their survival.

MadMitch, if it’s £50m we can cope and thrive.

    thecat, many thanks.

Lennondinho, we’ll have to wait until the hypothetical becomes a reality.

    voguepunter, too many bad influences.

  6. All PL said was Celtic do not need to rely on other teams to survive. It was obviously made in reply to the inference that there is a symbiosis between Celtic and Der hun which entails both entities must exist to ensure that both survive. That is patently not the case; as evidenced by our financial results. However I would suggest that PL’s statement does not indicate that Celtic PLC would be against a Newco Hun being admitted to the SPL. We need to maintain our vigilance. The support must ensure that the board know the consequences of any acquiesce by them to a Newco RFC into the SPL deal.

Celtic invented professional football in Scotland in the 1890s [ another good deed that didn’t go unpunished]; so we’ve done it before, and we may have to do it again.

  11. The quotes from Peter Lewell are very encouraging. Yet to read the full statement but from what Paul67 has reported it seems good.

Discussion last night aboout the boards position re entry of newco into SPL. Loads of respect for Auldheid and dont doubt for a second his sincerity about what he was told, but hope this statement from Lewell is an indication that the board are going to stand on principle on this.

  17. It´s very encouraging to read what Lawwell has said today. Although he hasn´t really given too much away, “I think we’ve a view, a very strong view on certain circumstances but we’ll only share that at the right time.”

Is it okay if I have my jelly and ice cream in separate bowls? I am a bit funny like that.

  18. As an onlooker tired of Scottish football’s eternal two team tussle, to learn that one team cheated for years to maintain their position would evoke further apathy.

But to then find the rule book was re written by the football establishment so the offending team could gain automatic re-entry would evoke digust.

  19. Well done to The Taggsys’ and everyone else involved in the quiz on Sat night.

Sorry I couldnt make it, but circumstances dictated otherwise.

  22. MM – I’ve noticed you’ve repeatedly alluded to the Sion Mentalist being the reason as to why our financial results being so good, i.e. had they played fair, we would have been out.

It’s been pointed out at least once, but likely more, that had they played fairly, they would not have had the same teams out for both of those games and would have been a considerably weaker team as a result.

That you continue to ignore this undeniable fact speaks volumes towards your myopic view of our board.

Be that as it may, it should also be noted that in the build up to the first match, Celtic were made fully aware of what was about to transpire and as a result immediately lodged a protest after the first leg.

This leads us to my point: Celtic approached and subsequently played both matches in the certainty that they were going to qualify from the minute Neil Lennon received their team-lines (indeed they had been made aware quite early by a Uefa official of the ruling body’s stance should any of the newly signed players line up). Celtic played two friendlies; Sion played two Europa League ties.

Long Long time lurker, thought i would increase my addiction and actually register and maybe get involved.

Great work by paul67 and everyone who contributes to how cqn has grown..

just moved to perth 6months ago, great celtic community here and was delighted the celts were playing the week

i arrived.. miss derry abit but miss the chance to go to parkhead whenever i want alot more.

wee bit on what i think are the most talked about issues on here

didnt think lenny was upto the job as i think its too big a job for a rookie, loved him as a player but wanted someone

with more experiancel.. delighted to say lenny is doing very well for his first job.

lawell…… im anti lawell. we dont want him blowing loads and loads of money and love the thought of

buying players cheapish and early 20’s and watch them develop into great players and possible

celtic heroes but as we have seen the past 3years there is time to spend abit more on experiance. he failed us

on this too many times. he hasnt dealt with the poppy issue properly. NO poppy for me

Brown- i like him to an extent, good engine and love his on field wind ups but he hasnt done enough but just maybe

he is about too do what we expected. i hope so. stand and deliver broony

fraser- has really improved this year, i wasnt too bothered if we didnt get him this year again and felt we shoulda

went all out for westwood. FF is doing great and i do think at 2m hes a bargain. this is where lawell should step in

sammi– i havent a clue… hated to see the abuse he took from all directions as i hate seeing any1 in the

hoops do badly, he loves us and im glad lenny stuck by him. he is unstoppable at times. hoepfully

like brown we are gonna start to see this more.

mccourt– as a derry man i obviously wanna see him do well, i cant understand how he doesnt play more,

never let us down too many times unlike big name players such as sammi and brown yet 1 average

game we dont see him for weeks and weeks, he should be playing at least 20mins when we are at home

and should be on the ball 60% off the time. he has skill and passing ability that probably no one else can match.

dont believe this nonsense about he cant play 90mins.. he played about 5games in 3/4 weeks

around christmas including a 2-0 victory at the bigotdome no problem. commons came in and rightly earned

paddys spot. still deserved some game time. i dont think lenny has been fair with him.

songs debate– we have hundreds of songs celtic and irish songs that are not too republican which i feel

we can sing without being too contraversial. we have too box clever. i say this as someone who listens to the

rebs everyday and loves them. but as i said box clever.

GB- give these guys what they want..celtic board should talk and support them publically .

    there making parkhead special again.

that was quick wee summary on where i stand on some of the chit chat on here.
