Celtic: We don’t need no stinkin’ Rangers

235

I may have slightly embellished our chief exec with my headline but that’s about the measure of Peter Lawwell’s message this afternoon.  He told the BBC, “We don’t rely on any other club. We are in a decent position, we’re very strong.

“We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan and a robustness hopefully that will take us through that.

“Times are pretty tough. I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to talk about any individual club, these things are hypothetical at the moment.

“I think we’ve a view, a very strong view on certain circumstances but we’ll only share that at the right time.”

He said, contemplating a plate of ice cream and jelly after lunch.  He really should order 60,000 small tubs of both for our last home game.

Thanks and congratulations to everyone who participated in the CQN Music Quiz in aid of the Vanessa Riddle Appeal on Saturday night.  The room was packed, not for the first time at a CQN Quiz, extra seats had to be commandeered from elsewhere, and a great night was had by all.

£492.53 was raised on the night on top of £800 from the purchase of online tickets and donations.  Special thanks to Frank O’Hagan – new album available here – who provided musical entertainment at the end of the quiz.  Thanks also to the Stornoway Celts, who provided prizes, as well as Celticrollercoaster and Tony Warrington, for selling badges and CQN Magazines respectively to aid funds.

The night would not have happened without the enormous preparation and work by Taggsybhoy, aided on the night by Mrs Taggsybhoy and young Joe – thank you.  This evening Taggsybhoy will put a signed Celtic top donated by Penfold onto eBay to bring the week’s efforts to a close.  I’ll let you know when it’s live.

Why on God’s earth would Celtic FC ever want to admit that it was in any way dependent on a corrupt, bankrupt and financially doped football club whose years of misdeeds and mismangement have caught up with it, and which are in stark contrast to Celtic’s financial stability, prospects and generally healthy state?

£5 mill / £7 mill increase in debt says your wrong.

We were a £70mill pa football team, we are now a £50mill pa football team.

What next with PL and his growth strategy?

We do not need the TFOD.

We need to up the charity angle – £5mill pa.

We need to run a second team in the SFL.

We need to re-furbish the stadium.

We need to totally regenerate the area surrounding CP.

We need to grow in other markets – team in the US …

  8. Posted a version of this in reponse to a Q: on RTC:

“PL: We have a stand alone strategy. We dont rely on any other team.”

I believe in some instances Celtic’s commercial interests are actively harmed by the OF tag.

The reality is the boycott by some Celtic fans as a result of McEwans sponsoring Rangers-only (I say some fans, I haven’t drunk it since I could afford decent drink), means that few firms targeting Scotland would risk antagonising a huge part of their intended audience. The knock-on effect of that is that we end up fishing in a pool of potential sponsors with deep enough pockets to sponsor both Celtic & Rangers – which is a very small pool indeed.

It is my opinion that if Rangers weren’t around, or were playing at a lower level, so negating the need for equal terms, Celtic would probably have a larger pool of potential sponsors and would probably gain more revenue.

I am sure there are other examples of similar restrictions.

At the end of the day, if Scottish football changes, we’ll cut our cloth to match. That’s the advantage of being a well-run club.

I expect it is a reference to the “tie-up” with Banstead Athletic. It could be another way of getting cash out of the huns before it all comes crashing down.

  11. If (when) the huns die another club will take their place, indeed if the early 80s are anything to go by, 2 or 3 clubs will rise to take their place.

That is the way of life.

We would have more competition, higher attendances, less vile supporters and sporting integrity.

Well done Peter Lawwell, a much maligned figure on here. I hope your statement quietens the negative speculation from some folk on here. Consequently thanks for the info on our record.

My basic point is that 5 years ago we were loking at a £5mill net spend.

Now we are looking at a zero net spend, that is player trading.

Finally we are looking to sell if we have a T/O glitch.

No Sion mentalist and we would have had to sell a player this season just to keep the boks balanced.

We are not in a good position and this is down in the main to the failings of one man.

  24. James Forrest is The Emperor of Ice Cream on

All the speculation about Celtic’s position is over with today as far as I am concerned, and the Lawwell haters can spin it as much as they want, as the press can spin it as much as they want.

When some of the most respected people on this forum, Paul67 included, stated with certainty that they had taken soundings from people inside the club that our position on Rangers was that we would be aggressively opposed to a NewCo being parachuted into the SPL there were some determined not to believe it, and to rely on other sources who’s “information” was the opposite.

Where I agreed was that it would be good to hear something from the club itself on this issue, and when Neil Lennon spoke about not needing Rangers last week I heard, in his statement, the voice of the club itself, as I don’t believe he would ever have made that announcement without knowing the position of people above him. Today Peter Lawwell has confirmed it in the only way he could, short of a statement saying “let them die.”

For me the club could not do more, at this time, to make it’s position known, and in getting that out there the rest of Scottish football, the media included, are on notice. Celtic is willing to take a hit, perhaps even a big one, to see that justice is done.

Not only is the league flag coming home, but the spirit and noble intent of our club is being re-affirmed.

I am very proud of our board of directors today.

The fans of the club Celtic apparently ‘need’ hate our manager to the extent of physically attacking him on three separate occasions and then attempting to murder him and two others whose crime is to support our club.

Rangers are a cancer. The club represents hatred on a vast scale. They will only be missed by those who support them and what they stand for.

dynamo kiev embarked on countless european cup runs of glowing success despite holding a total monopoly in the (then) soviet union.

porto are utterly dominant in portugal, but seem to find european success fairly easy to come by.

other examples like ajax and lyon verify that in leagues where one team has massive advantagesover the other league teams, they can still produce an exciting and successful product.
