Celtic will weep

502

There are probably a dozen important metrics to measure Celtic’s health: total revenue, commercial revenue, merchandising sales, trophies, European progress, but the most important long term indicator of the club’s health is the is demand for season tickets, which not only sold out this week, but did so in record time.

Three years ago, the upper tier of the Lisbon Lions stand was covered in advertising tarpaulin.  Brendan Rodgers’ arrival changed that, but his departure changed nothing. Now, the task for Celtic, is to keep the kettle boiling without the perma-tanned one.

My suspicion is, there is going to be an intensity about the next two seasons as Nine and Ten come into focus.  These will be leagues for the ages, we all want to be there.

But the football business is never simple, even if the next two seasons go to plan.  Football does not stop at Ten, but getting there changes everything.

Alexander the Great wept when there were no more worlds to conquer.   11, 12 or whatever-in-a-row would all be just another season for Celtic fans, what number do we chase with any conviction then?  This is very much a First World problem, can you imagine how losing the next two leagues to Celtic will affect our supposed rivals?

Celtic the Great will weep at having no more records to chase, but, goodness, the bitter realisation of historic and perhaps permanent failure – knowing the best you can hope for is second to Celtic – that will threaten the viability of some.

I’m enjoying these times.  Every minute of them.  You have a good weekend.

Emeraldbee…check out hotel El Rey Moro…calle reinoso, round the corner from cathedral…very small but very beautiful. You are welcome to enter and take photos (worth it)…stayed there with wife…jacuzzi on the roof…fabulous…

  2. A fantastic performance by our girls and beaten by a very dodgy VAR decision. 2-1 No disgrace. Bring on the Japanese – Friday at 2pm!

Emeraldbee…not suggesting you stay there…very difficult to get a booking (so small)…we entered to take photos and talking to reception managed to get a cancellation for following week. Pure chance…visually beautiful…

Goalkeepers do tend to be taller these days, but I would argue that they lose many goals of the type that your old school goalies, like Ronnie or Gordon Banks, would simply not lose. If being tall is enough there would a few good goalies on this site, but there is probably isn’t!

  6. The height of the goalkeeper dod cross my mind when Emgurlaaaand were awarded their highly dubious penalty. Hard to the top corner and the ladies goalkeeper has no chance.

Amyway, back to the fellas and hoping that Holland lift the trophy(or is it a flag?) tonight in a game that also has at least (in the 90 minutes) both teams scoring and at least 1 of them twice, 8 corners and 3 cards. A bet has been placed ;-)

    Good goalies ??

I would be happy with Celtic fans on this site :-)

My father didn’t speak to me much about football .. not sure why, he moved George Connolly but thought Ronny Simpson was shoite … every Celtic fan has their own opinion

    Gambling is a mugs game

Holland with both teams scoring is 11/2…. that’s the bet for this mug :-)

  9. GFTB – I have similar – 4 things in 90 minutes (both teams to score, 3 or more goals, 8 or more corners and 3 or mor cards) and Holland to lift the trophy, whether in 90 mins or not. 13/2 ;-)

I think Holland are a great team to watch … any football not involving Celtic means I can just enjoy the game :-)

  11. Do you know (and nae Googling – I mean, what’s the point in showing you’re good at Googling???) the Europena cup / Champions League has only been won by team from 10 countries. 4 of those countries only have a sing;e winner, including Scotland (OBVIOUSLY!!).

Embdy fancy guessing the top 6 (in order) as well as the other 3 ‘single winners’?

And a fine example of a future Tory PM

  13. And incidentally Scotland are unique in that they have only ever had 1 winner and they have only ever had 1 runner up, both being the same team!!!

Right while you are all simmering Jobo’s non-googling brain teaser, I have just found on my phone (that’s my excuse for the poor quality out the way), some pics and a couple of videos (short) from May 25th….aye just a couple of weeks ago.

I left the Gorbals in the sunshine, then got soaked as I sauntered along Aikenhead Road but as I left Hampden I was serenaded by thousands in the early evening rays in the shade of a treble treble…

So for those like me who want to hold on to that day and will face up to the new season challenges when they arise, here’s a wee bit of feel good grinning and whoop-de-whoop-de-whoop (That’s a Whoops triple for the Hoops treble ).

Just before kick off at THE cup final, fair play to the SFA as the laid on a great pyro and welcome for both teams.

    HOWEVER!!!

On reviewing the photies I took I wonder how many ground-staff/volunteers were actually burnt to a crisp and vapourised?….The authorities probably saved a few bob there, only paying the survivors!??

There was a map with all the information going around Twitter recently. The only thing that stuck with me was the surprising fact that a French club has only won it once.

  23. From those stats there are a couple of heartbreaking stories. Whilst we won it once and lost it once, how about –

    Juve – 9 finals, just 2 wins

    Benfica – 7 finals, just 2 wins

and even Bayern Munich – 10 finals, 5 wins

  24. Matt Stewart on

    Jobo,

let’s not forget Dundee United….. and the authorities did the square root of zilch.. and I quote

“Roma director Riccardo Viola has confirmed his club gave French referee Michel Vautrot £50,000 ahead of the second leg of their semi-final against United in April, 1984.

McLean’s men had stormed to a 2-0 lead at Tannadice but lost the return in the Olympic Stadium 3-0 as Roma progressed to the Final, which they lost on penalties to Liverpool.

Suspicion has long lingered around Vautrot, who awarded Roma a second-half penalty, and McLean has revealed former SFA secretary Ernie Walker demanded a UEFA probe.

But the beaks in Switzerland didn’t want to know – and United’s defeat has, until now, remained one of the greatest hard-luck tales in Scottish football history.”

    Hail hail
