Celtic’s £50m income advantage and overinvestment

994

I’ve seen a bit of chat on where Dave King’s promised overinvestment is, since Celtic humbled his team on Saturday. Let’s be clear, Newco are overinvesting.

Senderos, Barton, Hill, Kranjcar are all earning over £750k, Barton significantly so. They signed a further seven during the transfer window. Running costs are eye-wateringly high for a club without significant income streams from Europe, television or merchandising.

The £30m PR bluster, which the new board used while trying to unseat the Easdales, can now be seen for what it was, but this level of expenditure is pretty much as high as is practically possible without a lunatic Sugar Daddy. In fact, if we were running with similar numbers, I would screaming at you that we need to cut back for fear of insolvency.

Four years ago someone in the game suggested to me the Rangers group of clubs were fatally wounded, despite selling over 30,000 season tickets for the Third Division. The reasoning being that the brand depends on an air of success, and would crumble under sustained, unrelenting, mediocrity.

I’ve been saying for four years, most people haven’t began to realise the far reaching consequence of what happened in 2012. “Getting back” (sic.) isn’t about reaching top flight football, it’s about having the budget to be able to compete with Celtic, who could turnover around £50m more than Newco this season.

Where do you even begin to tackle a problem like that?

No Sugar Daddy will make the multi-season investment required. Insolvency remains a real danger for any club running a deficit in double-digit percentages of its turnover, without robust borrowing in place (or a genuine billionaire acting as backstop, if required).

The non-football costs of running a club at Ibrox and Murray Park (an albatross) are significant and comparable to costs at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown. This leaves income available for football comparable with Hearts, Aberdeen Hibs and Dundee United.

The real conundrum is, do you accept your place and live within your means, or risk insolvency trying to catch Celtic? I don’t think either scenario is a viable option. You can make your own mind up about the viability of the football club.

I’ve not mentioned the toilets on Saturday, which is no more than you expect, but I did expect better than the dummies (which have been shamefully exploited to represent something they were not). Could the Seville experience happen now? Nope. This should concern us all.

  1. No Bobby Does It Petta on

I would much rather have them in the league and enjoy more results like Saturday’s, than seeing them die and rise again, die and rise again …

Evidently, there is at least 55,000 others with me on that. Play them, humiliate them. Home and away. For years to come.

    Sounds good to me.

Aye,wee Sinclair’s quickly becoming an object of my adoration.I love watching players who ‘think’ the game rather than just being reactive. His off ball runs remind me a tad of,dare I say,Henke. Can’t compliment him any higher than that.

I get the grin thing,my jaw’s actually starting to hurt. ;)

The best is though, they are so far gone, that they believed they should have won on Saturday.

They are so blinded by hatred, they cannot see how bad they are.

That can only be good for us:)

Much more fun to come i suspect.

  4. Few articles for y’all today now that the hangover has abated :)

First, the turnaround in media coverage has been amazing. Brendan and his players have forced a lot (though not all) of the cynics to eat their words already … his danger now is being drowned in sycophantic drool.

And then there was Jailbird Joey … and his tussle with Brown. Take a look at the picture that headlines the piece, because it’s all in there. The Battler vs The Bottler.

    Good analysis, Paul.

The “trick” seems to be to create the illusion that the gap is minor and easily bridgeable. Keep the fans putting the cash in thinking they are “nearly there”.

Obviously Saturday (despite what the magic hat said) showed up the reality on that front.

What’s the “plan” (for want of a better word!) now?

Saturday was a one-off blah blah?

The MSM seem to be turning on magic hat a bit. Does that take the heat off King like with McLeish/Le Guen and Murray at the old club?

Interesting to see how this one plays out.

  8. I’ve not mentioned the toilets on Saturday, which is no more than you expect, but I did expect better than the dummies (which have been shamefully exploited to represent something they were not). Could the Seville experience happen now? Nope. This should concern us all.

My interpretation I that the fan behaviour and experience of Seville 2003 will not be matched again if we have the type of stupid and crass behaviour exhibited on Saturday with the blow-up dolls; no doubt Paul67 will correct me if I am wrong.

Much of the spirit of Seville came from the affinity for the club by the fans, many of an older age group (30 and above) who had been through the real hard times of the early 90’s. The level of success we have achieved since the early 2000’s has, IMHO, increased the sense of expectation and diluted the sense of the struggle it was to support Celtic through those dark days: 11 Championships, 6 Scottish Cups and 5 League Cups.

I also feel that as time moves on, the founding principles and values of the Club are lost on some, but not all, of our younger supporters. That link with the past has always focussed our support and truly made this great institution as a Club like no other. Maybe days like Saturday, When Brendan Rodgers invokes the spirit of Jock Stein will help; as would a proper museum telling the history of our great Club.

It is part of our heritage as Celtic supporters and we need to do what we can to perpetuate it.

Maybe I’m wrong, maybe Paul67 didn’t mean any of that; but I did!

  9. There is absolutely no chance of the current version of the Ibrox club going into administration. They may be running at a loss, but in football, that is sustainable in the short term. Administration is about debts, not losses. They are not crippled by massive debts, like OldCo was.

At worst, they will be financially hamstrung for many years. That will be more prolonged pain for the hordes. A couple of seasons of mediocrity and watch their crowds plummet.

  12. AULD TAM:

I don’t mean to sound disagreeable here brother, but it never ceases to amaze me how few people understand how this stuff actually works.

You can carry losses, year on year, as long as someone’s willing to underwrite them, whether that’s a bank or a sugar daddy owner. Administration isn’t about debts at all, that’s a misnomer. You don’t have to be twenty million in the hole before someone pulls the plug.

Why do some people still think of football clubs in a different way than you would if you were running your own business, or balancing your own cheque book?

If you spend more than you earn sooner or later the party’s over. You don’t have to be drowning in red ink before you can no longer buy food and electricity and pay bills as they come due; that happens when you run out of money. And at a football club those bills are always coming due.

Administration happens when the cupboard is finally empty. When you can’t borrow another dime from your fellow directors and the wages and the other bills have to be paid.

Don’t look for this club entering administration when they are £30 million in the red … that’s not going to happen this time. The plug will be pulled long before they get to that, because past a certain point (which we are fast approaching) no-one’s going to carry the water any further.

Wait and see. We’re going to enjoy the show.

  13. I had a chat with Alex Thomson of Channel 4 on Saturday. He was filming outside the main stand. He told me his court source had advised him BDO’s BTC appeal ,if it is to be heard, will come before the Supreme Court next June. We’ll see.

Could not believe the number of times Ian Crockashite mentioned the O## F###. It was like a competition. Only outdone by their coverage in the lead up to the game against the New Club.

Just as well we handed the New Club their arses on a plate. BUT….

Tam you say they do not have debts. As I said earlier, since they began in 2012,they have been racking up losses each year, which now run into around 30 million. These losses just dont go away. They are debts to someone.Add in another 7-8 million this year.Just who pays?.Who is owed what?.

They have no income, apart from SBs.No sponsorship to speak of now.

I really am mystified how they can keep going.

  18. I’d echo Paul67s recollection of the past. I’ve certainly discussed on here that they’re not a viable business with that stadium. They’re crowds will plummet if they’re outside the top 3 after Christmas.

It might be an idea to start reminding any fans of TRFC you know that they’ll be due a refund if they cancel their ST.

  19. These Club 1872 dobbers are pure comedy gold. Maybe they want us banned from their sh**ehole stadium so they can furnish their toilet wrecking fetish and have more to destroy.

Without wishing to defend the Dummies (an insensitive, unfunny, slightly sinsiter display), surely we can all see what’s happening here?

After every humiliation for Rangers/The Rangers, the press run with deflection stories.

This happened after the so-called Shame Game (RFC discipline collpses, yet NFL is the one in the dock); against Hibs (they screw up the final and invade the pitch – yet the “story” is about their players being “attacked”); and yesterday (humped on the pitched, horrific stadium vandalism – yet the story centres on a tasteless joke that was seen by a few people – maximum- in the stadium on Saturday).

Clearly, Level5 are earning their corn.

Also interesting to see some of the most loyal hacks turning on Warbo this morning. Anyone else think he’s about to be thrown under a bus by King?

  24. Auld Tam on 12th September 2016 1:13 pm

James Forrest has answered you points very well; but just to make it very clear: they do not have an overdraft facility or line of credit with their bank. They are not listed in any stock exchange so don’t have the ability to run another share issue. They don’t have audited accounts or the ability to appoint a NOMAD in order to seek stock exchange listing.

The bottom line is that the only potential source of funding they had outwith their board headed by Glib & Shameless was Mike Ashley and they have well and truly burnt their bridge on that one.

So unless someone is willing to come in and buy the club and then invest somewhere between £60m to £100M they have NO CHANCE of continuing to overspend as they are. I don’t have enough inside info to really speculate (possibly James or Phil do) but I would be surprised if they can see out the season without a significant cash injection from somewhere!

Worth pointing out that permission to appeal has yet to be granted by the Supreme Court, even assuming it has yet been sought. It’s a formal step, distinct from leave to appeal already granted by the Court of Session.

The Supreme Court need to decide if there’s a point of law worthy of their time to consider. I’m quite sure there is in this case, but the case can’t be scheduled until permission to appeal is granted, and it can’t be granted before it’s sought.

  26. Afternoon Bhoys, the 2nd of a two day hangover. Done well to make my flight back to Dublin Sat night. Was very drunk but what a day! I actually lost my boarding but they let me on the flight, thankfully.

Anyway, anyone else think Tom Rogic’ 1st touch is world class? Genuinely think it is phenomenal. Balls get pinged in2 his feet regularly and he kills the ball stone dead!! Did Rogic go off because of injury? He was playing well, was very surprised he got taken off.

Yep much harder, especially when your so called own are looking to deliberately misinterpret anything you might offer as a joke. As SOT said earlier most humour is made on the cusp of bad taste. A couple of weeks ago we had a Jerry Sadowitz fan club in here and we never hear a bad word about Frankie Boyle. Yet a couple of sex toys with hands tied behind their backs it a dig at suicide not execution, that was a big enough leap but some took it further. Aye yer right it’s much much harder to do comedy when we have so many precious born offended in our number.

Although it’s not the original Rangers we are currently Rodgering, it sure is satisfying. And wether we like it or not, a version of rangers in the league leads to more income for us through Match day income, season tickets, etc. Parkhead was bouncing on Saturday. At the end of the day it’s the same muppets that support the newco. I say we enjoy them while they last.
