Celtic’s £50m income advantage and overinvestment

994

I’ve seen a bit of chat on where Dave King’s promised overinvestment is, since Celtic humbled his team on Saturday. Let’s be clear, Newco are overinvesting.

Senderos, Barton, Hill, Kranjcar are all earning over £750k, Barton significantly so. They signed a further seven during the transfer window. Running costs are eye-wateringly high for a club without significant income streams from Europe, television or merchandising.

The £30m PR bluster, which the new board used while trying to unseat the Easdales, can now be seen for what it was, but this level of expenditure is pretty much as high as is practically possible without a lunatic Sugar Daddy. In fact, if we were running with similar numbers, I would screaming at you that we need to cut back for fear of insolvency.

Four years ago someone in the game suggested to me the Rangers group of clubs were fatally wounded, despite selling over 30,000 season tickets for the Third Division. The reasoning being that the brand depends on an air of success, and would crumble under sustained, unrelenting, mediocrity.

I’ve been saying for four years, most people haven’t began to realise the far reaching consequence of what happened in 2012. “Getting back” (sic.) isn’t about reaching top flight football, it’s about having the budget to be able to compete with Celtic, who could turnover around £50m more than Newco this season.

Where do you even begin to tackle a problem like that?

No Sugar Daddy will make the multi-season investment required. Insolvency remains a real danger for any club running a deficit in double-digit percentages of its turnover, without robust borrowing in place (or a genuine billionaire acting as backstop, if required).

The non-football costs of running a club at Ibrox and Murray Park (an albatross) are significant and comparable to costs at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown. This leaves income available for football comparable with Hearts, Aberdeen Hibs and Dundee United.

The real conundrum is, do you accept your place and live within your means, or risk insolvency trying to catch Celtic? I don’t think either scenario is a viable option. You can make your own mind up about the viability of the football club.

I’ve not mentioned the toilets on Saturday, which is no more than you expect, but I did expect better than the dummies (which have been shamefully exploited to represent something they were not). Could the Seville experience happen now? Nope. This should concern us all.

  3. Great result on Saturday – was away for the weekend but when I heard the result I couldn’t get the smile off my face.

I read Paul’s article with interest. It always amazes me how quickly both the board and indeed fellow supporters turn on the celtic support. Seville was a great experience and it had a mood all of its own. I don’t think that mood could ever be replicated regardless of what is going on.

But to expect the celtic support to be forever angelic when faced with wanton racism is really amazing. Celtic fans can do no right in Scotland. they are to be reviled and subjugated. No matter what the celtic support do they will always be portrayed badly. This is simply a symptom of scotlands racism. Its no mystery.

None of that is of course an excuse for poor behaviour, but when the Sun twist a story to make it something it isn’t you should have the right to expect the club and supporters to rally round.

Not a bit of it it seems. This disdain for fellow supporters is growing.

But perhaps I leave it to VFR800a8 to really take it to the next level with this:

“I also feel that as time moves on, the founding principles and values of the Club are lost on some, but not all, of our younger supporters. That link with the past has always focussed our support and truly made this great institution as a Club like no other. Maybe days like Saturday, When Brendan Rodgers invokes the spirit of Jock Stein will help; as would a proper museum telling the history of our great Club.

It is part of our heritage as Celtic supporters and we need to do what we can to perpetuate it. ”

    Utter guff. Prime 100% mince.

Our youngsters have lost touch with our principles? Where? Show me how that is manifesting itself?

I would point you to the boardroom. Are they in keeping with our founding fathers and our values. Does getting non contractual bonuses etc fit with the reason why celtic where founded? How about not paying the living wage or zero hours contracts? Or how about lying repeatedly to the celtic support or maybe colluding with corruption and/or standing idly by while it happened?

I expect to read rubbish like this in FF – or the Sons of Struth statements. Utter garbage and utterly hypocritical. And at its very least sanctimonious claptrap.

  5. Some comments on how this will play out over at Sevco. King will be protected as long as he keeps paying the Level 5 invoices. The logical step would be to throw Warbo under the bus if things don’t improve.

    But.

Didn’t the just sign a new deal? It would be a long time to place him in the Garden for a skint club.

    It’s an unholy mess.

  6. Lustig putting the burst beachball on his head like a hat in the 2nd goal celebration was fantastic. Note to Section 444: That’s how to use inflatables.

In terms of the article Paul it is spot on. Analysing what happened in the summer I think the signings made at Ibrox were madness. Their fans were excited by last year’s team, and while it needed help there was another bridge to be built this year. Manage expectations around top 6, engage the fans on ‘the journey’ and pick up the feel good factor along the way, building for a tilt at Europe and the title in years 2 and 3 of the Premiership. Instead the bravado of ‘going for 55’ has taken over, the signings are the opposite of moneyball, whatever you call that (any suggestions?).

The question has to be why did they do that? Why did they flood their team with ageing journeymen who will bleed them of funds and provide no return? It has to be desperation. They don’t have the funds to make that bridge. Losing to Hibs was a much bigger blow than many of their fans understand.

But who sanctioned these signings? Was it Pep Warbiola, or is he a stooge? If it was Warbs and he actually though that this team would challenge then he’s creating a damaging legacy much deeper than you or I could have achieved for them. IF he’s a stooge and there’s a privacy clause in his termination payment then the legacy of self destruction will endure beyond him.

In short I agree there is another financial catastrophe looming. They can chase Europe and two cups, but as each of those fall the desperation will become ever more evident. Share issue and take over by Club1872 / sham fan ownership isn’t too far away as King exits before another insolvency event.

  9. Just so you know that Paul is not alone in his appraisal of Rangers’ finances, here’s an extract from another blog, not as cautious, allusive or wise as CQN, but bracingly outspoken, frank to a fault, sceptical to an even deeper fault – and written by a bluenose:

Kranjcar’s decline has been so precipitous that he found himself on a short contract in the second tier of American soccer. He was so clumsy and slow in the tackle that he had to be withdrawn as he almost certainly would have been sent off. This signing is a failure by Warburton. If he is being paid £17,5oo per week, as those close to the Auchenhowie Academy suggest, his forty-eight week contract will cost Rangers £865,000, which is inclusive of a £25,000 payment to avoid relegation. Senderos, who was clearly out of his depth at Celtic Park, is reportedly earning £793,000.His replacement on Saturday, who will be 38 next month, is on the same terms. As are Wallace and Miller. Joey Barton, who insiders suggest is earning £1,033,000, was so slow in distributing the ball that one wonders what all the hype was about. Garner, wearing a tea cosy and costing £1.47m (don’t believe the hype), is on the same basic as the senior players, namely £793,000. Tavernier and Waghorn are now both earning £697,000 per annum. The other members of the 25 man squad are earning a minimum of £409,000 per annum. If my sources are accurate, Rangers are spending £12,432,000 per annum on an inordinately poor squad of football pensioners and Scottish Championship-level players. This on current income levels is not in any way sustainable. Those expecting King to turn up bearing gifts in January will no doubt be surprised when Waghorn, McKay and Tavernier are being punted by their respective agents

JJ site is forever going on about nefarious practises regarding money laundering taking place.Dont know the absolute truth about that, but just where are they getting the money from?

We know the costs of running a club their sze with their overheads, and according to what I have read, their ST money, their payment from 32 Red,amounts to 9 million ,after tax. That will probably be around half what they require this season. They are not listed, their accounts, what we see,are not signed off.o one knows how they are running this business.

There are 2 threads running on FollowFollow that claim the huddle after the 3rd goal – the Poznan – was co-ordinated to mock the 66 victims of the Ibrox diaster, running as it did through the 66th minute.

Yes, you did read that correctly. Our celebrations were designed to mock a disaster. Celtic had the audacity to score just before the 66th minute and 50,000 has the disgusting taste to use that to dance on the graves of victims of a tragedy.
