Celtic’s fitness deficit

189

With a little over two weeks until the league campaign is underway and, more importantly, five weeks until Champions League qualification starts, Celtic’s three games in France in the coming week take on an importance beyond results.

Many of the teams we could face in the early qualification rounds have been back playing football for a month and will be at peak fitness for the European qualifiers.  Celtic normally face this fitness deficit in the qualifiers only against Scandinavian opposition but there is a high probability we will face teams five weeks ahead of Celtic in match fitness.

This autumn, European football will split into the haves and the have nots.  Celtic could be a team in the Champions League, picking up talent at a price not seen for a decade, or we could lose more money than at any time in our history.  Champions League qualification is up there alongside winning the league as the most important objective for the club, even this season, when 10 is on the horizon.

Lou Macari against Aberdeen’s Martin Buchan in November 1971. There was an amazing 64,000 inside Parkhead that day which bettered the much vaunted Manchester derby of Best, Charlton, Lee and Bell played at the same time. Within 14 months both Lou and Buchan were at Old Trafford.

Thanks. I have been in The Bon Accord a few times but I am sure it wasn`t that one. The correspondent said it was a popular spot for visiting/exiled Hebrideans so, maybe it actually was The Hebridean on the Great Western Road. Anyway, enough of this !

Yes, the doom and gloom referred to “mineshafter” type epithets.

In all seriousness I don’t think Celtic PLC are open to suggestions* they have their model and they’ll stick with it. There is a real inertia in the Celtic Board now.

Several years ago on CQN I commented on the subscription based media service route, we were getting stuffed by the broadcasters. Imagine we had done something about it then. I’m sure we would be benefiting above the paltry £32m Scottish will recieve next season.

The SPFL/SFA would still be able to sell the rights to Broadcasters (in a non-exclusive fashion) for old firm games, cup finals etc.

The fact is, no one in Scottish football has the wherewithal to deliver this sort of proposition.

  12. A few weeks ago there were posts regarding virtual season tickets and the dilemma for fans with more than one ticket in a household.

It doesn’t look like I’ll be getting a season ticket this year. So my thoughts are that if anyone who has 2 or more in the house I could contribute on a game by game basis in exchange for access to the game until the ground is open again.

I’m 70 so would be on the basis of the cost of a concession ticket say £20 per game.

I would commit to every home game and pay per week. It would of course have to work – I’m in England – probably need to see what the rules are.

Anyone interested can you email lennybhoycfc@gmail.com who has kindly offered his contact details. It will be on a first come basis.

That settled model that you decry as inertia has been instrumental in consolidating the initial advantage Fergus provided, in giving us a larger stadium.

If Celtic are not open to the alternative model, but its proponents believe it is a surefire winning model, there are plenty of desperate clubs looking for any edge in a tough market.

I am beginning to feel that maybe there isn’t much to the alternative model if it can persuade no-one to give it a try.

  18. Chairbhoy

Celtic did not have the freedom to negotiate their own TV deal. They werre bound in with all the other Premiership Clubs and none of them would allow us to leave to get our own deal and a larger slice of a tough TV sponsorship market.

The solutions have to be real ones.

  23. An American soldier having spent several weeks on the front line during World War Two was given some time off for rest and relaxation. He decided to head to London and found himself on a crowded train exhausted. He travelled the full length of the train and there was one seat beside a snooty English woman with her little dog . Ma’am may I sit here I’m very tired. The lady looked down her nose and said you Americans are so rude can’t you see my little Fifi is sitting there. He went back the whole length of the train before eventually ending up back with the lady and her dog , again he politely asked if he could sit down as he was so tired. She retorted not only are you Americans rude you are also arrogant , he then picked up the dog and threw it out the window and slumped into the seat. The woman screamed and demanded someone should chastise the soldier, An English gentleman sitting across the isle stood up and addressed the soldier you Americans seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You eat with the fork in the wrong hand you drive your Automobiles on the wrong side of the road, and on this occasion you threw the wrong bitch out of the window😀

  25. SFtBs @ 10:01 & 10:04 PM,

Well true, the bigger stadium, season ticket sales and improved merchandising was all brought in by Fergus and has proven to be a winning formula.

The current Board have from time to time looked to improve things. Celtic TV, the Hotel, the Stadium experience, bringing in BR…

Yet it has been hit and miss, for me there seems no appetite to improve things at the moment and that’s where the inertia has crept in. It will change of course if we get offered a chance of participation in a bigger league set-up. Until then Fergus’s model will suffice.

One thing this current Board did manage to secure was exclusive rights to sell our merchandise. However as Adidas has brought JD to the party that is no longer the case. Still it’s a great deal and something this Board do very well is “partnerships”.

As Paul67 alludes to failure to qualify for the UCL could be an issue this season. One of our stated aims is UCL football but we don’t prepare specifically for it, so often fall short there. It looks like the only way we will maintain our financial performance during this pandemic crisis is UCL participation and selling a high value player.

How do we ensure UCL qualification under these circumstances?

It seems that most are happy with the ten and to take the financial hit on the chin… if Rangers have a good season domestically and in Europe it may be a case of be careful what you wish for.

Of course on the media subscription model, the SPFL would have to be involved, yet PL seems to have a great deal of influence. He could help promote a change in thinking.

Yet the mechanisms and relationships are there with the broadcasters and the old-school think of the vested self interests will always take pecedence under the current regimes. The recent end of season discussions and votes prove that.

    Some are calling for change…
