Celtic’s heroes wanted home and fit 8 days from Champions League

325

Delighted as we all are for the success of the Scotland team, flush with six Celtic players in Friday’s starting line-up, Brendan Rodgers will primarily be hoping they, and our many other players on international duty, come through the remaining World Cup qualifiers unscathed.

On Friday we are at Hamilton, but one week tomorrow we face PSG at Celtic Park, against a team who have scored 14 goals in four league games last month – then signed striker, Kylian Mbappe from Monaco.

The one player who could have done with some international game time is Jozo Simunovic, but he managed only the bench as Bosnia easy past Gibraltar. Hamilton’s artificial surface is not the place Brendan would want to give his central defender a run out, after being rested for visit to similar surfaces at Kilmarnock at Astana.  Jozo is fit, so could go straight into the team for Tuesday, but I’m sure the manager would prefer him to have an outing first.

Not that I’m nervous about Tuesday, of course.

Points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss)

    Goal difference

    Goals scored

Points in matches between tied teams

Goal difference in matches between tied teams

    See my previous post.

UEFA changed it for this qualification.

Goal difference is before head to head this time.

    Macjay.

Goal difference DOES count in determining positions in Group if level on points.

The results against the bottom team are disregarded when determining the best runners up from the groups. There are 9 groups but only best 8 runners up go through to the play offs

Two wins is our only chance, then it’s down to being in the top eight out of nine, it’s almost certain that two wins would do that

  4. In the last World cup as England stayed true to form and flopped the commentators were all trying hard to understand and trotted out numerous excuses.

The American Alexie Lalas then said maybe they did not underachieve as they are just not very good.

The other EPL sycophants were pissed at his suggestion but he stuck to his assumption and cited their constant failure at international tournaments and suggested the real problem that both the EPL and English national teams were simply overrated.

Thanks for all that info on goal diff., lads.

I`ll have to digest it now.

So pleased to have a competitive Scotland team once again.

The smile on Griffs face after scoring tonight says it all.

  6. Whoops just realised I’m talking Lilian Gish

Goals are before head to head

    So back to square 1

    Two wins

Thanks for the clarification, my assumption was wrong on the bottom team, that only comes into it when determining the best 8 runners up

As far as I am concerned who cares win lose or draw Scotland allways have been gallant losers and there is no reason for that to change. I am more concerned that we get our players back from the International break un injured we already appear to have lost Sparky due to injury. H.H.

The Huns only being asked as they have a large following in Canada. Sponsors decision.

*They played over here in 1980 in the Red Leaf Cup along with Ascoli, Botofogo and Nancy.

There game against Ascoli ????? was on a Sunday morning and was televised live. I went to early Mass that morning and came back to watch it.

Now this is during a period, a result of the trumpet’s ancestors wee free laws, when off sales closed at 5:00 pm on a Saturday night opening again on a Monday morning around 10:00, and bars opened only after 12 noon, still do, and any booze had to be bought the night before.

They lost 0-2 with a team consisting of the Girvan scheidthouse, a “ball playing” half back line of jaws, jackson and stevens, the pie eater and his snyde “brither” wan cell leading the line and wee bully davies coming on as a sub.

That morning as the good people of the Greater Toronto Area were going to church and probably signing “they will know we are Christians’ by our love”, they were revelling, to a full TV audience without turned down microphones, in their full repertoire of hatred while rampaging through the ground throwing what missiles they had smuggled in.

Due to this being the Sabbath and two visiting teams playing there was very little police presence that morning, didnae stop the sirens blaring tae the stadium though.

Fast forward 2 years and we have been invited over to take part in the Labatt’s Tournament along with local sides Toronto Italia, Toronto Pan-Hellenic and Dynamo Zagreb.

Both local sides were envisaged to be little more than fodder for their European rivals and the organisers had pencilled in a winner takes all final clash between Celtic and Zagreb.

I worked over here in construction for many years and, not making excuses for our club here, there were only 2 days when it was too hot to continue working; this was one of them, even with a 24 pack of beer between 3 of us.

That Friday night in a breath catching humid TO air we went 1-0 in front of Toronto Italia, before a jet lagged young side succumbed to 4 goals in the 2nd half when a young Paisley ex-pat called Ed McNally tore Willie McStay a new one.

That night I vowed NEVER tae watch Celtic again, including visits hame, I was gutted, my brother fully concurred with this.

On the Sunday a recovered Celtic side, minus a huffy TT and his brother, thumped Toronto Pan-Hellenic, of similar quality to Friday night’s opposition 7-0.

Without us and Zagreb in the final it looked as of the tourney host were going tae take a bath so in an effort tae avoid this, a friendly between us and Zagreb was hastily arranged.

That evening as I made my way to meet up with this bus taking us tae TO, I was a born again Tim after a 2 day divorce lol, listening tae a sports talk show, its generally all baseball in the summer, on the car radio when a caller phoned in tae say the game had been cancelled.

After a wee bit of investigation by the show’s host it seems that the Canadian Soccer Association, after the stramash between the huns and a minor Italian side, had ruled that only games involving a Canadian team and a visiting one could be played. That scheidt had donald ducked us again.

Moving on another 2 years and they’re back only this time tae play Toronto Blizzard, who would do a hi hi and 1872 at the end of this season, at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, . This time though Hamilton’s finest was ready for them as the hordes were escorted to police vehicles for drunken behaviour after they again lost 0-2. Ex-hun and future “they’ll be dancing in the streets of raith tonight” manager played against them that day.

I know Ivor Wynne or as it’s now known Tim Horton’s Stadium quite well. We played in the Hamilton Cup there 3 months after our Croy via Montréal/Arizona saviour arrived. We beat the calvinists 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Carl Muggleton was our big hero that afternoon saving 2 of them, the other highlight was the putrid performance of a wee scheitd who was substituted for future Under -20’s coach Stevie Frail who had his penalty saved.

The following day we beat the sheep 1-0 in the final, our 2 stars from the day before Sid and John Collins had flown home for national duty being replaced by Gary Holt and Stuart Gray.

The next morning on the way to work I heard the sheep chairman at the time being interviewed after the game, he commented along the lines of “they might have won the cup but it disnae get them intae Europe”. Soor grapes.

2 year ago I volunteered for the Pan Am football games being played there; it’s a lovely stadium in a blue collar area primarily populated by Europeans who worked in the local but now extinct steel industry. Approaching the stadium I passed Ukrainian, Polish and Roman Catholic Churches.

All that I have mentioned above you will NEVER read in the smsm, it’s all true though.

Tickets went on sale in Munich today.

Every BM fan wants to see Celtic. I got five tickets for €75 each. Sell out I hear. Get onto Celtic for away tickets.

  18. October is going to be a challenge for the Celtic internationalists. Home and away WC matches, home and away v Bayern plus 4 SPFL matches Inc away to Aberdeen and Motherwell.

Coming out of that run unbeaten would be some achievement!

  19. DD- that seems a high price for Germany? Usually reasonable prices mate, good luck for tickets BTW

The price at ticketmaster goes up as the demand gets higher. Likewise the hotel that I booked in Munich for Sipsini and I at £50 a night, is now £100 a night. Flights to Munich similar. All robbing capitalist bassas. :)

The decline in shipbuilding on the Clyde happened long before Thatcher ie. long before `80 .
