Celtic’s leadership, fight and ability all required

275

There is a truism in football: the next game is always the big one.  It felt very true a week ago, as we prepared for a trip to Dundee – even more so late in the second half.  Now, all I can think about is Hearts tomorrow.  A win opens up our world.  For a while, at least, we go six points clear and ask questions of the pretenders.

Hearts are a difficult team to analyse.  They sit third in the table, having twice beaten the champions.  Since that second win five weeks ago, they have drawn with Kilmarnock home and away, lost at Ross County and in the Cup semi to Newco, while recording wins over Greenock Morton, St Mirren and Livingston.  In short, they usually win against teams they are better than, and Celtic.

Whatever crisis of faith I had in this Celtic team back in February has been restored.  They are not the finished article, but they are a team with leadership, fight and ability.  Gallons of which will be needed tomorrow.  You and I will need to provide enormous vocal support – and to put a lid on any impatience.

Late news on Liam Scales new four-year contract.  Does anyone else in the squad personify leadership and fight as much as he does?

1986 in scottish football could be argued as the last great “provincial ” season.

a really good hearts team, the end of the dons domination (i would argue celtic did, but the record books say otherwise) the last hurrah for united coming up in sweden, and the huns team of the easy beats, they lost 14 games i think in a 36 game season.

celtic regularly played to 12,000 croeds, as was the case 2 weeks before ar celtic park, 2-0 v dundee, followed by 2-0 at motherwell.

and onto love street in blind faith, our bus convenyor would regular say we can still do this.

Personally I don’t think Hearts’ recent form is that relevant. Tomorrow will be their finishing line and they’ll treat it as a cup final.

For me it’s a no brainer you sign up your current starting CB.

Strengthen in the summer and Liam becomes your back up.

It’s the CBs below Scales we should be moving out the door asap.

So, I am ” Waiting” to get my name on the Waiting List…..I don’t think it will ever happen.

Scales is no better than Welsh, Ralston although has done reasonably well this season.

If this is the level of our ambition though then we are simply continuing with the down sizing exercise.

Summer transfer window will tell us more but this is absolutely underwhelming.

No doubt they will . It’s ironic to think that if they’d tried their arse last week , they could have got to a real cup final .

  17. “Late news on Liam Scales new four-year contract. Does anyone else in the squad personify leadership and fight as much as he does?”

There are other far more important qualities I like in my CBs and I find him lacking in a few on occasions sadly. However still happy to see him stay even if I’d like a better starting CB and if the manager is staying and he genuinely is rated by BR as 2nd best of the bunch then it is a smart move.

I know being friendly and humble are not qualities you might care for / expect in a pro footballer but I value them as much as leadership and fight and Liam certainly appears to have both. Wee lhad got a photo taken with him after the Dundee game and he was an absolute gent (as were MOR – as always – Bernardo, Reo, AJ and Callum).

Liam Scales hasn’t faced much of a challenge from Lagerbielke or Nawrocki , not that either of them has had much opportunity to challenge . Can’t see us signing another CB unless one of them moves on ,so we may well go into next season with the status quo .

Should make Europe interesting if that happens.

Better to have him signed up now, we know what we have with him, surely he can only improve? It doesn’t mean that’s it for CB signatures, does it? There are offseason decisions to be made on all the CBs apart from CCV, let’s see what happens.

    Comhghairdeas a Liam!

  21. These so called fans on the board hopefully are dismissed this summer, they do I good good for themselves freebies travelling all over the world ,best of hotels, etc etc,yet the ordinary fan who are desperate for a season ticket are completely ignored, there is plenty of unused spaces that should be upgraded, ie 2 ends of the main stand and the top of the main stand.

  22. vinniethedog on

Of course Scales deserves a contract…jeezo no brainer ……does it mean he will be first choice next season..of course not …..but great back up

  23. I think that Brendan has done well this season with the players at his disposal. He was minus Jota and Starfelt from the start and both were vital components in last year’s success. Compounding

tje manager’s problems he had to contend with long term injuries to key players.

One thing does surprise however and that is that Brendan seems unable to get the best out of Kyogo who should be a potential match-winner week in and week out.

  24. Delighted for Scales. He has not perfect but he has many good qualities as a footballer and a person.

If we win this league over the next 3 weeks he will have more than earned it in my opinion.

Ibrox at the beginning of the season, when many had already thrown in the towel on here, would not have happened were he not leading at the back.

I am also delighted that Liam Scales has got his new deal.

He stepped up to the plate when required and has always given his all and never hidden , even when under mega pressure.

He will be the first to admit that he can and will improve certain aspects of his game, however there is little doubt he has earned this deal.
