Celtic’s perils on show again

1679

So are we surprised at last nights’ defeat?  There’s some surprise that we scored three goals away from home, which if we count Moscow, is becoming a habit, if an incredibly lax one, but I’m less surprised we shipped four, again.    Even at full strength, we are several players short of being able to play Ronny Deila’s high-energy pressing game, so when the squad is further depleted by rest, injury and the like, we cannot expect to play an expansive game and come away with a result.

Fortunately the outcome didn’t matter, but it will next time out in this competition.  I’m very supportive of Ronny and think we have not even begun to see the real benefits of his work, but he got it wrong when he opened up a game which did matter in Warsaw.  We’ll need to see if he decides to play this way, with many of these players, in the Round of 32.  For then we either need to add appropriate players or change tactics.

There’s been a bit of chat on how attendance figures are reported.  Football clubs report paid seat sales, which baselines attendance at season ticket sales, but the ‘bums on seats’ figure is usually far lower.

The showbiz side of the game will always want to report the higher figure: see – our fans are faithful through and through, and all that.  Only Manchester United and Arsenal report higher average league attendance figures than Celtic in British football.  This claim maybe reliant on ticket sales, but it is an important indicator of the size, and therefore potential of our club in the right environment.  Not to mention the efforts many thousands go to in order to financially support the club, in sunshine or in shadow.

It was still somewhat refreshing to hear the new newco director inform the media that his club attracted less than 16,000 people for a recent home game.  The cynic would point out that if newco fall into insolvency, the excuses are already established – fans are not as loyal as they claim, blame then, not their unfortunate execs.

Many thanks for all the feedback on the 2015 CQN Annual.  You can order yours here, or get a special Annual-DVD bundle here.

As a special offer, everyone who buys an Annual, or bundle, before Christmas will be entered into a prize draw for a VIP Meal of 4 at a Celtic Park restaurant on a match day.  One entry for each Annual bought; pile in.

Our friends Magners, who I increasingly think get what this club is all about, have offered us another pair of Premium Tickets for the Jock Stein Stand on Sunday.  It’s a great way to watch football, especially on a winter’s day.  To enter the competition, email me celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team Celtic play on Sunday in the subject line of your message.  Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, winners will be informed by email tomorrow, so check your inbox!

The deal I have with Magners is that when we make this offer, we ask you to consider making a £1 (or more) donation to our Mary’s Meals Appeal.  We are working towards building a kitchen at Chibwata Priimary School in Dowa, Malawi, which has 909 pupils and does not have food preparation facilities.

With a kitchen – and Mary’s Meals providing food – they will be able to provide primary school kids with what is often their only square meal of the day.  This work cuts infant mortality, improves school attendance by an average of 30%, and increases life chances exponentially.

No matter what you do today, this £1 will do things you cannot imagine.  It will make your day worthwhile.

I’ll be out with my boys on the bucket collection for the Foundation before kick off on Sunday.  If I’ve not coaxed your last £1 out of you, bring another one along to the game.  The spirit of Celtic needs to take care of those in our own community, as well as in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Sorry for all the calls to action todaym in summary:

The Annual, with a VIP Meal for 4 competition.
The Magners’ competition, email celticquicknews@gmail.com
The Mary’s Meals £1.
See you at the bucket collection on Sunday!

    ‘gardening leave’

    ###

I believe the correct term [or at leasst was when the phrase was first coined] is garden leave, the reasoning being that the sort of people who might enjoy it are likely to employ a gardener to do the gardening.

Is Coisty the sort of chap who might employ a gardener?

I haven’t read back but as soon as I heard the news today that Ally McCoist had tendered his resignation I had but one thought:

“Christ, there must be some really bad news coming round the corner!”

Later on in the day, a friend of mine who is more of a Rangers supporter than a follower of any other team ( though he has a fondness for Kilmarnock as well ) expressed te same opinion.

Ally wouldn’t leave unless there was trouble at mill!.

  3. Just read the BBC webpage, lifted my spirits a bit with this little tit-bit.

Former England midfielder Dennis Wise, who last managed at Leeds United in 2008, is also highly quoted, having been director of football under Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, who has helped fund Rangers this season.

He likes to lay on the ‘altruism’ with a trowel but the bottom line is that superCoisty’s #1 piority is self preservation.

  8. What a dreadful Friday afternoon in school there. Right up until period 5 the atmosphere was good with Christmas preparations in full swing and the kids excited about ceilidhs and pantos and the like. Then some ne’er-do-well breaks all the rules and checks his phone which is obviously armed with a Sky Sports App. (Detention all next week)

The bad news spreads like wildfire as the Grinch enters every room and Christmas appears to be cancelled. Some parents have to be contacted and that’s just for the teachers.

However a sense of calm is eventually restored when the ‘janny’ checks her twitter feed to discover Ally hasn’t left at all, as sleekit as ever he’s slid under the doors of Ipox in an attempt to be the good guy once again…thank God!

The directors who have turned down his resignation clearly don’t buy into the ‘they’ve been punished enough’ mantra

  10. FFin’ imbroglio:

“BBC Sport understands Rangers will reject Ally McCoist’s letter of resignation. Most of the board are currently in London, no talks planned.”

    ——

“So they want him to walk”

    ——

“I dont understand – is resigning not him walking?”

    ——

“I could weep….this is just so dreadful.”

    ——

“A 12 month rolling contract runs for 12 months from when it is signed. Therefore the 12 months expire next summer not 12 months from now!!”

    ——

“Don’t know if I should be angry with ally for this or not. I am thinking I should.”

    ——

“There is more to this than meets the eye”

    ——

“if ally has offered his resignation does that mean he wants to leave?”

    ——

“Wee trip to the doctors….a sicknote for stress, 12 months off work and they need to get a manager in….There is not a doc in the land who would deny him a sicknote considering the media pressure”

    ——

“He’d have to keep a very low profle for a year which would be quite difficult.”

    ——

“Could he be deliberately trying to drive our attendances down even lower by getting our hopes up that he was leaving only to then leave us deflated by it being confirmed that he will be staying as a lame duck manager for another 12 months.”

    ——

“Is this all part of the big chess game that is Rangers and is King using Ally as a double Agent?”

  11. The hun board should call his bluff, they lay him off, don’t pay him, he sues them, they go into admin, they blame him for bringing the club down.

On 2 nd thots, no, keep him.

I think he knows what hes doing but there are so many mitigating factors throw into managing Celtic that being able to practice what you preach is anything but straight forward.

The Transfer Window is one and something that is costing more and more new managers their jobs before theyve been given a crack of the whip.

The style of football he wants the current squad to play is like coaching Gaelic Football Players to play Aussie Rules.

You also have another mans shortlist being thrust in front of you and told to pick something from that, the whole transfer / loan fiasco etc etc.

What is annoying me is the lack of a Plan B and failing to learn from mistakes.

How we come out of Januarys transfer window will give us all a better idea as to what his plan is and whether the board are willing to facilitate that or continue to hinder.

I completely agree though he has contradicted himself on numerous occasions causing suspicion / concern.

At this moment in time I am fairly convinced he would have been a sensational assistant to Neil Lennon.

Main man? Jury still out but I’m still backing him, ill review that come Feb 3rd.

  16. Rangers will reject Ally McCoist’s letter of resignation, BBC Scotland understands.

Most of the Scottish Championship club’s board are in London for the next 48 hours and no talks are planned.

The 52-year-old former Rangers and Scotland striker tendered his resignation on Thursday.

But, as it stands, he will be in charge for Friday evening’s Scottish Championship fixture against Queen of the South – until told otherwise.

McCoist has a 12-month rolling contract with the Glasgow club, who are refusing to comment officially at present.

So either the club pays his salary of £400,000 per year up in full, come to a settlement, or keep him in place for the next 12 months

  17. “A 12 month rolling contract runs for 12 months from when it is signed. Therefore the 12 months expire next summer not 12 months from now”

Shakes head, but much rolling about that; what this poor soul is describing is a one year contract. A 12 month rolling contract means there’s always 12 months on it, means no repeated negotiations every year or two and the subject or employer of the contract is always entitled to 12 months comp on it being broken. Simple
