Celtic’s perils on show again

1679

So are we surprised at last nights’ defeat?  There’s some surprise that we scored three goals away from home, which if we count Moscow, is becoming a habit, if an incredibly lax one, but I’m less surprised we shipped four, again.    Even at full strength, we are several players short of being able to play Ronny Deila’s high-energy pressing game, so when the squad is further depleted by rest, injury and the like, we cannot expect to play an expansive game and come away with a result.

Fortunately the outcome didn’t matter, but it will next time out in this competition.  I’m very supportive of Ronny and think we have not even begun to see the real benefits of his work, but he got it wrong when he opened up a game which did matter in Warsaw.  We’ll need to see if he decides to play this way, with many of these players, in the Round of 32.  For then we either need to add appropriate players or change tactics.

There’s been a bit of chat on how attendance figures are reported.  Football clubs report paid seat sales, which baselines attendance at season ticket sales, but the ‘bums on seats’ figure is usually far lower.

The showbiz side of the game will always want to report the higher figure: see – our fans are faithful through and through, and all that.  Only Manchester United and Arsenal report higher average league attendance figures than Celtic in British football.  This claim maybe reliant on ticket sales, but it is an important indicator of the size, and therefore potential of our club in the right environment.  Not to mention the efforts many thousands go to in order to financially support the club, in sunshine or in shadow.

It was still somewhat refreshing to hear the new newco director inform the media that his club attracted less than 16,000 people for a recent home game.  The cynic would point out that if newco fall into insolvency, the excuses are already established – fans are not as loyal as they claim, blame then, not their unfortunate execs.

Many thanks for all the feedback on the 2015 CQN Annual.  You can order yours here, or get a special Annual-DVD bundle here.

As a special offer, everyone who buys an Annual, or bundle, before Christmas will be entered into a prize draw for a VIP Meal of 4 at a Celtic Park restaurant on a match day.  One entry for each Annual bought; pile in.

Our friends Magners, who I increasingly think get what this club is all about, have offered us another pair of Premium Tickets for the Jock Stein Stand on Sunday.  It’s a great way to watch football, especially on a winter’s day.  To enter the competition, email me celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team Celtic play on Sunday in the subject line of your message.  Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, winners will be informed by email tomorrow, so check your inbox!

The deal I have with Magners is that when we make this offer, we ask you to consider making a £1 (or more) donation to our Mary’s Meals Appeal.  We are working towards building a kitchen at Chibwata Priimary School in Dowa, Malawi, which has 909 pupils and does not have food preparation facilities.

With a kitchen – and Mary’s Meals providing food – they will be able to provide primary school kids with what is often their only square meal of the day.  This work cuts infant mortality, improves school attendance by an average of 30%, and increases life chances exponentially.

No matter what you do today, this £1 will do things you cannot imagine.  It will make your day worthwhile.

I’ll be out with my boys on the bucket collection for the Foundation before kick off on Sunday.  If I’ve not coaxed your last £1 out of you, bring another one along to the game.  The spirit of Celtic needs to take care of those in our own community, as well as in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Sorry for all the calls to action todaym in summary:

The Annual, with a VIP Meal for 4 competition.
The Magners’ competition, email celticquicknews@gmail.com
The Mary’s Meals £1.
See you at the bucket collection on Sunday!

  2. leftclicktic & Lennybhoy, I like ye’re teams but why no Lustig. Thought I read somewhere that he was likely to be fit for tomorrow.

  3. Snake… that’s exactly the kind of charmlessness and mean-spiritedness which characterised the Yes campaign, and propelled you all to a well-deserved and miserable defeat.

That, and your crazy-loco economic “plans”…

  4. ItaliaBhoy can you give me the source for your figures/assertions, I,d like to check them out Thanks. Hebcelt

  5. Italiabhoy,

Was that prediction based on the December 2014 price or December 16?

We wouldn’t have been facing a tsunami of cuts right now as we would still be part of the Uk until 2016.

Your economics lessons leave out so many facts. The Snp version of how public finances could look in 2016 was their version. Who is to say what a scottish national Labour Party would have done?

Instead we had the scottish Labour Party prop up the uk labour party in the grim hope they could rise again. The Labour Party need to turn in their A game over the next 5 months with some economics that people can trust. Borrow more and raise taxes?

  6. Italia Bhoy

Is your 37% figure of those eligible to vote?

45% of those who voted voted YES. Surely you cannot know how those who did not vote would have.

We don’t have compulsory voting like in Australia.

The Labour Party are now an irrelevance in Scotland. Never thought I’d ever be able to say that.

Not wanting to Start a War, were you always wanting to say that?

  8. ItaliaBhoy 11.44 That is exactly the type of coat trailing post that Republicans in Ireland had to endure from the Orange supremacists and which perpetuated the bitterness and helped sow the seeds of revolution. Do not make the same mistakes in Scotland.

Well NegAnon, Its 90 years since brother turned on brother in this Country, and believe it or not there is still bitterness in some hearts. The younger generation know nothing about it of course, and with the passing of the older generation it will be finally consigned to History. The situation in Scotland is nothing compared to what happened here of course but I can readily believe that friendships have been broken and that is indeed regrettable.

As Dominic Behan put it in his song, The Patriot Game, “The Love of one’s Country is a Terrible Thing”.

  12. Horrid Henry, those cuts you mention are enforced cuts that had to be made due to west Minster cuts. Some of this cuts may not have been so deep had local Authorities been able to raise concil tax. The Snp are not the answer but then neither was a no vote.

Never posted before but saw petethebeat is looking for medical help. We’ve not had a proper flu outbreak for the last few years, so we’re definitely due one. Sounds like you normally get the common cold but this year you’ve got a proper flu. Sorry to say Pete, but it maybe another week before you feel any better. At least yesterday must have made you feel better. “Shambles in Sevconia” is a well-known cure for the flu!!

  16. ItaliaBhoy,

Your economic argument is correct and deep down everyone knows it.

As one of the substantial majority > 62% who either didn’t bother to vote or voted against I resent the tail wagging the dog.

As for rank egomania step forward wee eck. I hope the good people of Gordon recognise gross hypocrisy and take the appropriate action.

The only lasting legacy of the referendum has been division.

    HH big Kind Fella.

  19. Green piñata, I don’t think everyone does think it’s true. Deep down most folk boy know a maximum of 20 % of how public finances come together.

It’s really surprising how many folk don’t realise that your council tax doesn’t pay for everything your Council pays for.

  20. Like no other – Thanks for the sensible post.

At least, I got this virus well before Christmas.

I tend to feel worst in the morning and seem to get stronger during the day.

Nice to be able to read books and watch tv without guilt but I do have a pile of stuff to get sorted when I get well again.

  21. Get over it and move on sounds like resignation to apathy and determination of our direction from folk that don’t care.

  22. Snake, of those who turned out to vote, 45% voted Yes and 55% voted No.

But as not everyone voted, the actual percentage of the entire electorate who bothered to vote one way or the other lowers each camp’s total.

In the case of Yes, 37% of the entire electorate voted Yes.

Not quite the same ring as the, ahem, “45”, eh?

  23. does anyone know how many days it is till xmas ?

my wean forgot to tell me this morning , and i am a bit lost on it all

  24. Italia Bhoy

As I say – shame on all those who voted no. I will not let my disgust dissipate.

I don’t give a damn about the economic arguments – every other small country who have voted for independence don’t sit and talk about how rich or poor they would be, or how could they pay for it, they do it because they want to run their own affairs for better or for worse.

As Margot MacDonald said – when you are dependent on yourself, you work harder, you grow bigger, you achieve more.

That is what unionists cannot understand or they don’t want to try to do. They are happy being kept and thrown sweeties.

I understand things need to be paid for but as one prominent Celtic supporter in the campaign said – Scotland is stinking rich, it is what we do with the money that counts.

Scotland would have been in time (not overnight) a successful nation because I believe in the ability of the people of Scotland.

All unionists ever talk about is what we cannot do.

How do Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg, Iceland, Switzerland, Sweden and others all do it but Scotland couldn’t?

Only Norway has oil in that list.

Scotland has much to offer the continent and the world as an independent nation, we have far less tied to the UK.

That is the same tired argument Labourites use in regard to the Scottish parliamentary elections.

45% voted YES who bothered to voted as 55% of those who bothered to vote voted NO.

We don’t have compulsory voting like in Australia and as neither side got over 50% using your figures maybe we should rerun it and make voting compulsory.

Then we’d see exactly what the whole country really wanted.
