CELTIC’S TRIO OF EURO CONQUERORS KO’d

CELTIC’S trio of Champions League conquerors this season – Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund – have failed to reach the semi-finals of Europe’s elite competition.

The performance of the evening, though, came from Arsenal who travelled to Spain with a 3-0 lead for their second leg against trophy holders Real Madrid.

The Londoners won 2-1 to go through the last four where they will play Paris Saint-Germain.

Kieran Tierney, returning to Parkhead in the summer, had a cameo role as a stoppage-time substitute as they eased through 5-1 on aggregate.

At the same time, Bayern Munich, 2-1 down from the first leg on their home ground, drew 2-2 with Inter Milan at the San Siro to stumble to a 4-3 aggregate loss.

Harry Kane’s side eliminated Celtic at the play-off stage after winning 2-1 at Parkhead and drawing 1-1 in Munich.

Last night, Villa, who beat the Hoops 4-2 in the final round of fixtures in the Midlands in January, exited the competition, despite a stirring home second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

They were trailing 3-1 from the first game in France and lost two early goals at Villa Park, but they came back to win 3-2 on the night before crashing out 5-4 on aggregate.

Borussia Dortmund, who routed Brendan Rodgers’ men 7-1 in Germany, overcame Barcelona 3-1, but just couldn’t overturn the 4-0 loss in Spain.

The Nou Camp outfit will take on Inter Milan in their semi-final encounter.

The Final is due for the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday May 31.
