Celtic’s Yoko Ono Moment

354

From a practical perspective, the delay in appointing Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham to the coaching staff wasted crucial time during the transfer window.  Deals often conclude in the final days of the window, but work continues from the end of the previous window.

Take it from me, Shaun and Martin had nothing to do with the debacle in January, but our assistant manager was integral to recruitment operations across the second half of last season.  Then, for a month, nothing.  Celtic may yet have a fantastic transfer window, but be assured, they need to play catch-up.  We have squandered momentum for one of our most crucial annual tasks.

Shaun, Mark, Martin and others at the club will now start work together again, but the shenanigans over the last few weeks will cast a shadow.  The dynamics that bind groups of people into successful teams eventually hit the skids.  There is always a Yoko Ono moment and when it happens, things are never quite the same again.  I am the first to remind you that you that your team wins more than any other club in the world, but this episode reeks of dysfunction.

  1. Surely not ‘disfunction’ when we have ‘recruitment infrastructure’ remaining in place?

  2. glendalystonsils on

Disfunction suggests things not working properly . I prefer to frame it as negligence .

Captain Desmond surely had time to see the Iceberg looming , and if not , his petty officers could have drawn his attention to it .

Expectations of the club acting professionally plummeted again, as soon MON had secured his miracle double. Utter contempt, no regard to communication, as the ST deadline came and

went, it took a month to get guys who were already in the building. The transfer window should be another hoot, with the clowns dancing to Dermot’s ‘good value’ dirge.

Supporters are mindful of bringing our boots and arriving early for Flag day verse Dundee, as the window will still have a full four weeks to run, with no Brendan Rodgers to blame , for wanting

    “quality” .

Now we look forward to the modernisation of our club and the filling of all the “ the empty roles “ quote P67.

  5. We are not primarily a serious football club, until that changes this will continue, all that matters is the bottom line max the earnings spend on the wrong players at the wrong time and pay huge amounts in tax on profits. Where is the football department other than todays last minute appointments who has signed players and who is looking at who we need?

  6. P67

A bit of reality, which is welcome.

I’m sure we’ll see some transfer action within the next month. 🤔

  7. I know folk will say look at the domestic success, we have 2 players in the National team who showed what the best of this country can produce, nada.

  8. Excellent article. Very sobering

Hopefully, puts to bed any suggestion that this is normal

Anyway, time for all to earn their salary

We have a league to win

  10. the long wait is over on

It seems likely that there were 2 scenarios at play here:-

    1. Following P67’s leader above, the management staff (possibly including MON) have been doing nothing at all meaningful about signings as their contracts weren’t finalised or

    2. They actually have been working , either because they were still under contract ( wasn’t that rumoured , possibly on here ? ) and only extensions needed agreed or because everyone was comfortable that a deal would be reached on better terms and they were just getting in with it.

Maybe P67 has inside info that leads him to conclude that scenario 1 applies.

If so , that’s ludicrously negligent of DD and the board.

It seems they are just about addicted to brinksmanship.

  11. Scottish football currently (and has been for too many years now) not a league for developing players. Foreign players will only come here as a last resort, imo. There has to be a consensus reached (which I doubt) about playing FOOTBALL, not what passes for it too often here.

  12. What’s the big hurry with Shaun and Mozzy……

FFS…surely they should have left it till two days before the season starts….

Next thing you know , they will be signing a player !

I would assume that someone will acquaint us with the ‘facts’ on this debacle.

I could see that a manager on one year contract is problematic for his chosen support staff – and very surprising that MON accepted the gig before this was resolved.

Not seeing why there is so much angst about how the club is being run.

Winning leagues, not too far in front of our friends across the city, pretty much back to full fat old firmery (and near certain to be ramped up further next season). Is that not what more or less everybody wants?

Obviously it’s not great if you are one of the small minority who would prefer to ditch the old firm so we can make progress in Europe, but for the overwhelming majority who are happy to continue with the old firm/European failure option surely it’s all good ?

    Absolutely sick of this lot.

The company I worked with for a while, had a hospitaly box at Greyskull, and I took a few customers there for a game.

I met a good few ex Gers guys, all decent enough, but Jimmy Millar was a really exceptional nice guy.

On more than one occasion, he would ask me to talk to his wife so he could go out and have a fag, very funny.

Willie Henderson was a decent guy to along with slim Jim.

Best of luck to all in planet Celtic.

As ever P67 invites you to be a Kremlinologist to read between the lines on who is responsible for the dysfunction and who fulfils the role of Yoko Ono here. Honestly not sure.

He too seems to share the only reasonable view that this is one more avoidable fyck up from our repeatedly useless custodians. It may ultimately fall within our tolerable margin for error and we qualify for the ECL and win the league again.

However, it does nothing to recommend McKay for his seeming maltreatment of football people who bailed the Board out last season, or our limp, passive CEO who allowed this to happen.

These guys are stinking the place out. Get P67 in as CEO instead.
