Cenkos involvement worth attention

585

There is a realisation that the information issued by Craig Whyte last week is only the beginning of what promises to be weeks of salacious details.  Ownership of Ibrox, Murray Park and other assets purchased by Sevco 5088, a company which Charles Green signed a Companies House form for on 27 December 2012, but which Craig Whyte claims to be a significant interest holder in, is in doubt.

This matter could take weeks to play out and months, or longer, to settle.  The evidence provided thus far is interesting but courts are notoriously more concerned by paperwork than recorded conversations.  If Craig Whyte has paperwork to back his claims he will feel by far the more comfortable of the two parties.

Of more immediate concern will be what Cenkos Securities knew.  Cenkos were the Nominated Advisors for Rangers International’s recent Initial Public Offering and Newco’s directors would have been required to inform them of any claim over assets, no matter how spurious or disputed.

City Regulators move quicker than the courts and will want early information on when Whyte’s claims were made, what was revealed to Cenkos and how the board minute-d these matters.  Keep your eye on this one.

Having used David Longmuir to get at SFL clubs in an attempt to sink league reconstruction plans Charles Green, who has made no secret of his opposition to them, turned to St Mirren chairman Stuart Gilmour.  Gilmour, who was incandescent with outrage last year when SFL clubs refused to make a space in their top flight for Newco, plans to acquiesce.

He should reconsider before the St Mirren board meet to discuss this on Wednesday.

Every day as the amusing news trickles over from the dark side I can’t help but think ‘It’s ole scrofularity Donty, but not as we know it’.

The ole hillbillies are surely reapin’ the ole whirlwind, as the great Sir Arthur Travers Harris GCB OBE AFC would wish me to point out.

It looks as though Alastair has left his Lambeg on Charles lawn, which is a dangerous strategy for the cheekie chappy.

Conspiracy theory suggests that the public spat with Green & Whyte indicates it is covering up something …. cock up theory suggests that they are all incompetent twerps , incapable of managing a business.

It is good to see Alastair following in Walters footsteps though and requiring £10m for players for Div 2 , excellent.

Alastair only has the dog whistle left to deal with Green , I suspect that Green will bin Alastair early summer then move on himself , sacked by the mystery backers…..

Never has there been a time for the Celtic board to keep completely silent ……. the best has yet to come

  8. I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Charles Green says they are the worst Rangers team in history. Ally McCoist says no they urny, they’re great. As far as I can see since their history is less than one year there is no problem they are both the best and worst Rangers team in their history. see no fuss at all. In fact if they should go bust again (hopefully) they will be regarded as one season wonders. one season, one title, kaput perfect.

Rangers chairman must stand up in club civil war between Ally McCoist and Charles Green

    8 Apr 2013 08:25

WHAT exactly is Ibrox chairman Neil Murray doing as the club’s most high profile characters fight it out in public?

SUSPENDED pending an internal investigation. It’s becoming the Charles Green way.

First Fran Sandaza, then Neil Murray.

One sacked for gross stupidity, the other paid off and silenced by a gagging order.

That was just about the best result possible for chief scout Murray but don’t expect to hear from him because he is now prohibited from speaking about his ordeal in public.

Which just might be the worst possible result for Rangers.

Had Murray been free to speak out he might have been able to enlighten a support becoming confused to the point of panic stricken by a series of scandals that are unfolding at an unrelenting pace.

The fans are suffering most right now. After all they have gone through in recent times they deserve to be treated with respect and with complete honesty. They need to be given the whole truth but they continue to get by on rations and snippets and left to guess about what is really going behind the iron gates of Murray Park.

All of which brings us back to Green who now seems to be revelling in his own lie telling as if shafting and swindling is a badge of honour.

It could be argued the chief executive is fortunate not to be on the receiving of similarly ruthless disciplinary action, along with Sevco cohorts Imran Ahmad and Brian Stockbridge.

He could be stuck at home this morning doing the garden with his big Yorkshire hands rather than walking back into Ibrox where a civil war is now under way.

Without wishing to sound too dramatic, this is a battle for the very soul of Rangers.

The question is this: Is there anyone left inside the big house with the courage or the clout to stand up to this latest gang of intruders? Anyone at all who is prepared to protect Rangers and stop the club being disfigured beyond all recognition?

Because so far – more than four days since serial liar Craig Whyte resurfaced with a fresh raft of allegations – the silence from the boardroom has been deafening.

Which begs the question: Where is chairman Malcolm Murray and what exactly is he – and the four non-executive directors – doing?

It’s a puzzle because Murray is proud of his staunch, Rangers- supporting background and his firm belief in immaculate corporate governance. For these reasons he should be striding forward into the vacuum created by this latest scandal and taking control of the situation before it becomes unrecoverable.

At the very least Murray should tell the stock market his board understands the explosive nature of Whyte’s claims and that they are on top of their duties.

He should order his own investigation, hire independent accountants and lawyers to examine all evidence, while co-operating

in full with the police and with liquidators BDO – both of whom will have been intrigued by this latest bizarre twist.

That’s the kind of decisive action Murray should be taking this morning and I suspect it’s precisely what he wants to do.

But if he does not emerge at some point today or tomorrow then it means he is being undermined by his fellow directors who have baulked when implored by him to do the right thing.

If so Murray has no option but to resign because he will have become a lame duck.

His allies – if any – should go with him because if they share his concerns but fail to act upon them they too risk massive reputational damage.

Maybe even worse than that if the police become involved. That’s how serious the situation has become and Green, Ahmad and Stockbridge will no doubt relish the chance to have their names cleared by any internal investigation because right now they are up to their eyeballs, googly or otherwise, in Whyte’s latest drama. If they have done nothing wrong they have nothing at all to fear.

However, their position is already a tricky one given the way Green chose to react to Whyte’s attempt at industrial sabotage which, of course, was planted in the pages of his pet paper, the doting Scottish Sun.

Whyte and the Sun have previous. Theirs is a long-term syndicate dating back to the days when Whyte denied he had sold off season tickets for £27million to fund his original takeover. It was the Daily Record who hunted Whyte down and the Sun who offered him refuge. In fact, that paper appears to be a sanctuary for scoundrels so perhaps it is no surprise Green now also sees it as his publication of choice.

It’s the place to go to pedal propaganda unchallenged. Even, apparently, if it’s done in the style of Alf Garnett.

For some reason, Green and his regime are not so fond of the Daily Record. They accused us of acting in a “malicious” manner when we broke news of Neil Murray’s suspension. How utterly absurd. Is it now “malicious” to uncover the truth and keep the club’s supporters informed of such important matters?

In the same statement they insisted Murray’s departure was certainly not a “scandal” and perhaps they were right about that. Of course it wasn’t.

Suspending, axeing and gagging the manager’s only scout is pretty small beer compared with the revelations from Whyte a few days later.

Now that was scandalous but the real key component to the tawdry public spat between Whyte and Green is not what this pair disagree on but, rather, what they both confirm to be matters of fact.

Who lied to whom and about what is irrelevant. But Green’s admission he was dealing with Whyte and his acceptance the man who wrecked the club was actually behind Sevco’s attempted takeover?

That really is extraordinary stuff and worthy of immediate internal action.

It may well have been noted both by the police and BDO’s investigation team who have been alarmed by some erratic decisions of administrators Duff and Phelps throughout last year’s insolvency.

In fact, Whyte’s initial move to appoint Duff and Phelps remains a cause for concern.

Not least because of his previous cosy relationship with David Grier who was part of the initial takeover team but whose firm then trousered about £5m in administration fees.

Also, there is a need to get to the bottom of how Green was eventually allowed to pick up the club’s assets for the paltry figure of £5.5m. A deal agreed with Duff and Phelps which excluded rival bids from any other party.

This was as unfathomable agreement that may have cost creditors millions – and which was triggered the second Green’s group stumped up enough money to secure preferred bidder status.

Now it has been further claimed that in order to help scramble that deposit together, Whyte dumped £137,500 into an account belonging to Ahmad’s mother. Again, this will be of great interest to the authorities because, essentially, this was the very moment Green and his backers were given a clean run at picking up a £50m business for a pittance.

It smelled bad enough at the time but it’s putrid now.

Which is why Rangers fans must hope there is someone at their club prepared to roll up the sleeves this morning and begin cleaning up the mess.

    Over to you, Mr Chairman…..

AFTER watching his side lift the Ramsdens Cup, Allan Johnston rubber-stamped himself as Manager of the Year.

Yesterday’s result made up my mind, too.

His Queen of the South side wrapped up their league title before either Rangers or Celtic.

The winning margin will be over 20 points. They’ll have scored over 100 goals by the end of the season.

They won at Ibrox against the mighty Gers, in an earlier round, no mean feat and now have the Ramsdens Cup in the Palmerston trophy cabinet, too, after beating First Division leaders Partick Thistle in the final. The trophy had extra meaning this year due to the involvement of the bigger half of the Old Firm.

As far as I’m concerned, no one else can match that. He just couldn’t have achieved any more.

I know some people will point to the fact that Neil Lennon still has a CHANCE of winning the domestic Double. But look what he’s spent. He also took Celtic through to the last 16 of the Champions League. But Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow were all under par and pale shadows of the teams they were a few years ago.

But votes have to be cast before the Scottish Cup Final on May 25 so, as it stands, my vote is for Allan.

Queens might be a full-time team in amongst part-time sides.

But he’s won that league in style and also has the country’s leading scorer in Nicky Clark.

Whether Queens can hold on to Magic for longer or not is another question. I certainly think he’s going to be someone who’s in demand, probably down Edmiston Drive way to be Super Ally’s number two. Not just because of the style his side have played, but also because he’s shown he is a winner.

When you’re in the lower levels trying to make a name for yourself, the bigger clubs, like Rangers like to see if you have the mentality needed to get across that line. As Ally proved with the Gers 55th title.

Allan’s proved he has it too. He has also shown he’s a clever man by taking Sandy Clark there as his assistant manager.

It shows Allan has not let his ego get in the way of bringing in someone experienced who he trusts and can listen to.

There’s been talk about Queens extending his contract and that has to be their priority now. Unless the Gers come knocking. He would be foolish to turn that down.

If they don’t give him a lucrative deal to keep him there, it might not be long before someone else comes in for him. And as I’ve said already, that will probably be Rangers. You could do a lot worse – Magic back at Ibrox has a certain ring to it.

As for yesterday’s game? Probably the less said the better.

Thistle will be kicking themselves. They didn’t play anywhere near their best and created very few chances.

The occasion seemed to get to both teams and it turned into a bit of a nervy encounter.

I’ve seen both of them a few times this season and they play much better football than what they served up yesterday.

Maybe the pressure got to them because there was a lot of back-to-front play. The competitors on Dancing On Ice keep their feet better than most of the players did yesterday. I don’t know what footwear they had on but I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many players slipping all over the place.

Queens just shaded it for me and deserve credit.

Someone who doesn’t is Thistle’s Aaron Muirhead, who embarrassed himself and his club with the headbutt that saw him sent off.

If you miss a penalty in the last minute of a cup final, then of course opposition players are going to wind you up.

But you can’t lash out like that, especially in a game as big as this.

It was such a crazy moment and the reputation of the club has been tarnished because of it.

Players do silly things but this was completely random.

Muirhead would have been one of the penalty takers in the shootout and we’ll never know what sort of difference it would have made if he was still on the pitch.

I’m sure Jags gaffer Alan Archibald will have words with him and he’ll be fined for his actions.

As it is, Thistle could yet be made to pay even more for his stupidity. He was already suspended for Wednesday’s league game with title rivals Morton but he’s been a key part of Thistle’s back four.

He could now be banned for longer at what is a crucial stage of the season and that could end up costing his team vital points.

It’s something he’ll need to reflect on but, as far as I can see, it was just selfish and more akin to street football than professional football.

He was only there in the first place to boost his ego, which he did by buying success with other people’s money.

That’s never going to happen again.

Any new involvement is only going to bring him further scrutiny and opprobrium.
