Central defence left open to criticism

333

Once Partick Thistle equalised, it was clear Celtic had plenty of spare gears to move through.  The game went to plan for the champions, even down to the manner in which the Thistle goal was lost.  Both central defenders left themselves open to criticism, highlighting the glaring deficiency in the team right now.  Whether the Belgian will play little or any part in the solution remains to be seen.

In five weeks, we face St Johnstone in the League Cup quarter final.  Cup games away from home are never the easiest, but by then we will have had a chance to flex our muscles in the title race, wetting the appetite for a challenge in the cups.

Artificial pitches are disliked by footballers for various reasons, so I have sympathy for the Newco manager, who yesterday called for them to be kept from top flight games, as they are in England and formerly were in Scotland.  They are cheap to maintain and provide an income for clubs, who hire them out, but the technology is still not up to the job.

How long before Motherwell, St Mirren, St Johnstone and others make the move?

What was it got Kenny Millar sacked by Livingston after two league games?  Results, tactical competency?  Or, judging by his mannerisms at Celtic Park two weeks ago, maybe a publicly overbearing attitude towards his players.

Brendan seems to share many of the same football philosophies and personality traits as Arsene Wenger – a dogmatic emphasis on what to do with the ball rather than what to do when you don’t have it.

In Brendan’s first season, I seem to recall Celtic successfully playing a “high pressing” game similar to Barcelona immediately when we lost possession – what happened to that idea?

Remember when we had to watch through our fingers when good old Olivier Tébily played CH!

  22. I cant believe the nonsense and revisionism I’m reading in the comments today…

Let’s interrupt the nonsense with a few salient facts…

When Brendan Rodgers arrived he was promised a big spend!!

Now cast your mind back to just over two years ago,,,

He targeted a few Welsh players he knew as well as some playing in England. The European National Championship was on, many of our targets jumped in price due to Wales great tournament and all the guys we were after excelled. This coincided with the fees in the EPL taking yet another surge..

Brendan seemed to take a pragmatic view on this and settled for a few of cheap options and the bargan that was Scott Sinclair. and some nice deals, such as Dembele.

For me he did brilliantly making do… double treble anyone?

It seems in the last two seasons he has squeezed the lemon out of NL and RDs squad and in this window was ready to push the boat out to ensure we really strengthened the team…

Yet it seems he’s been cut out off the transfer, player recruitment process. As he is the Football operations Manager this was a disgrace and led to a cluster of posts today… the good, the bad and the ugly… a few examples…

    Turkeybhoy @ 12:54pm,

”Amazing the views of some on here.Talk about wearing blinkers…

…A position that has been needing strengthened since BR took over, two years ago,is now worse. The same problem is what lost him his job at Liverpool Great at finding and improving forward players.Serious deficiencies regarding defenders. Every Liverpool fan was going through what we are now.Where is the list of defenders submitted to PL.I am sure we would have been made aware of them.

There has never been a mention of us being interested in a CH. Not one.

I also fail to see the harm in taking in loan players, the likes of ones we could never afford. It seems OK for teams from,Spain,Italy,France, but not us.A reality check needed. We are what we are.A giant team in a threadbare league. Dear God,we could not get a better club to get them from than Man City, but for our fans,no.With our management teams success rate signing defenders, we should be grateful for small mercies…

Yes a position that has needed strengthening since GS took over, since MO’N’s time there has been a deficiency here, getting the sieve © DBBIA – circa ages ago – sorted out is not new.

The few times we have made progress, the defence has not been built upon…

Let me give you a recent example… Ronny’s team had a reasonable run of success at central defence…

He had a great asset in Virgil van Djck… bought and sold for English gold, partnered by Denayer, on loan, so played less than 30 games for us and went off, leaving a massive gap in the squad…

Where was the squad management… nowhere.

You ask where was the list of defenders that Brendan put forward?

Well we can’t be sure, but as BR was obviously out of the loop on the Boyata deal, on the McGinn deal and on the Arzani deal, my best guess…

    Ignored!?

    Celtic Mac @ 1:28pm,

”Pretty sure it was Brendan who let Charlie Mulgrew go…

Apart from on the pitch that is. I posted last week that Peter Lawwell put more effort into selling Boyota than to signing McGinn after which Brendan threw his toys oot the pram. Boyota kept his side of the bargain, and was and is understandably upset at not being given the same opportunities as Wanyama, Van Dyck and Forster. Not to mention earning Celtic close to £10 mill. Ajer and Hendry do not have a whole lot of game time between them, but both are ahead Of Boyota in terms of footballing development. With Gamboa seeing some daylight, and the new floodlights too, Lustig and possibly Boyota available for Sudova we can hope we will defend well enough to get into the EL stage.

Interesting on Mulgrew, I seem to remember when he first left the Club I wanted to keep him – 90% on CQN disagreed. Pretty sure I was really glad to see him back at Celtic a versatile and very underrated player IMO – 90% on CQN disagreed.

As far as Brendan is concerned…

Pretty sure he didn’t let Mulgrew go… pretty sure Mulgrew was out of contract when Brendan got his feet under his desk, pretty sure Mulgrew with the other Delia rebels had blotted his copy book, pretty sure pretty sure Brendan offered him training facilities until he got sorted, pretty sure Brendan had a chat with him… in this regard, I’m not at all sure what your point is!?

Well think your right about Boyata, ten mullion… yet everyone who has said that is great money for Boyata has missed a huge salient FACT!!!

Why was the Head of Football operations outside the loop…. If he has no input into these decisions whose DRIVING THIS!!!! It is key… if our Manager doesn’t know what’s going on in the transfer window WHO DOES!!! That’s where the screw up was!!

Maybe we should be relying Older & Wiser people!?

They haven’t done so great themselves in the last decade or two….

    stephbhoy on 20th August 2018 2:12 pm

”Our team is not good enough and big upgrade is needed. We look at the massive money wasted below kinda highlights that…

…yet we are told we cant afford better player, sorry but better squad management could improve our lot

I’m not sure I’d agree with absolutely all of your player assessments (astute as they are) but I’d agree with fact that a big upgrade is needed. We need to manage our squad much, much better. And we really need to know where the money is going… we don’t need to go back to Seville © BSR… lets start with Lenny’s reign…

    Where’s the NL money gone!!!!

Go tell the Spartim @ 4:30pm,

    Two things

The PLC board not happy at quality of signings, so they are interfering in the football side then

Name one club that hasn’t bought its fair share of duds”

For me this is huge… who is it that is saying you don’t need a right back, you don’t need a Centre Half you don’t need to bolster Central midfield!?

Unless some genius who pops it head out on ground hog day and says…

    Buy Ki… he’d be good

Get Foster on loan… he’d be good

    Buy Wanyama… he’d be good

Buy van Djyk… he’d be good

    Buy Dembele……????

So, if unless our resident genius is prepared to stop working on a very part time basis, we are going to have to listen to our Football department… they might not be perfect but they know a heck of a lot more than our Commercial department – well, when it comes to football anyway as it has been indisputably proven by the fifty odd duds they have bought during that time.

Whit do you mean? like a concerted campaign. Worrying ain’t it. I sincerely hope that if this Campaign by folk who want to enrich themselves commercially at the expense of Celtic football team, gathers momentum the CSA and CST and the GB will be out in force to ensure it doesn’t happen – not after the event. But before they force Brendan out,
