Central defence left open to criticism

333

Once Partick Thistle equalised, it was clear Celtic had plenty of spare gears to move through.  The game went to plan for the champions, even down to the manner in which the Thistle goal was lost.  Both central defenders left themselves open to criticism, highlighting the glaring deficiency in the team right now.  Whether the Belgian will play little or any part in the solution remains to be seen.

In five weeks, we face St Johnstone in the League Cup quarter final.  Cup games away from home are never the easiest, but by then we will have had a chance to flex our muscles in the title race, wetting the appetite for a challenge in the cups.

Artificial pitches are disliked by footballers for various reasons, so I have sympathy for the Newco manager, who yesterday called for them to be kept from top flight games, as they are in England and formerly were in Scotland.  They are cheap to maintain and provide an income for clubs, who hire them out, but the technology is still not up to the job.

How long before Motherwell, St Mirren, St Johnstone and others make the move?

What was it got Kenny Millar sacked by Livingston after two league games?  Results, tactical competency?  Or, judging by his mannerisms at Celtic Park two weeks ago, maybe a publicly overbearing attitude towards his players.

    Agreed,

Our strength is our three strikers , we should ,where possible utilise this more often and play two for all domestic games.

In fact like North Cyprus Bhoy I would love to see the three of them in some games.

Play Izzy at LB and Tierney in midfield. A Mcginn type, but with more ability.

    Worth a try?

KT is a brilliant left back, didn’t like Scotland putting him at right back to accommodate wee Robertson and totally against moving him anywhere else… love wee Izzy but not to the detriment of a truly world class (in my opinion) left back that we have in KT why mess with the bhoys career

Totally agree about KT. In many ways he reminds me of the great Davie Hay who Mr Stein brought in to the team, first as a full back but who went on to be a class midfielder!

Despite all the talk about the need for another CB or RB, the glaring weakness in our team, is still the over reliance on Scott Brown. He is expected to do most of the heavy lifting in the middle of the park. That’s one of the reasons he s bein targeted by teams. They know that if they take him out of the game we would struggle against any team in the league IMHO.

    He was right.

Just for the record, we have just won a double treble.

The style of play, especially when played at pace , is easy on the eye . The style, like most methods isn’t flawless and can leave us exposed at the back, but jeez oh , do some folk on here like a moan .

    Short memories ? Entitlement ?

Or are the Rangers coming ?

Thankfully there’s still a few stalwarts on here who keep the faith.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Before heading to bed, just heard about a crisis meeting tonight regarding the injury situation.

    Anyone got any updates?

Apparently the powers that be at the club are seriously worried that, even in mid-August, the injury situation is SERIOUSLY depleting the squad.

Katic’s head injury, Goldson’s dodgy ticker, Coulibaly’s shoulder and Murphy’s busted knee top of an ever growing list.

In other news, Accies and Aberdeen have agreed a compensation figure for Lewis Ferguson.

Accies held firm and demanded that Aberdeen stump up £50,000 MORE than Sevco actually paid for Greg Docherty.

Aberdeen agreed and wrote them a cheque for £50,000.

An intrepid reporter (quiet at the back ! ) tried to contact Accies vice-chairman at his SPFL offices before remembering that his rangers loving ass had been kicked out with Budge’s in the summer.

    Hail hail

  14. Au contraire on Keiran Tierney, born to play in the position he excels for Celtic, we’ll never be the kind of side that has a full back in behind Tierney, the left hand side of the park is already his.

The dreaded ‘Celtic left back position’ suffered for years in real life and on the internet, is now ‘the dreaded Celtic right back position ‘

    Get it sorted Celtic CSC

  15. Some interesting and valid points have been made in the past week or so by supporters of the other SPFL Clubs in Scotland. Generally mocking us for moaning about money and lack of transfer activity when we have a squad accrued with a small fortune and earning huge wages. AEK Athens spent a fraction in 5 years as opposed to we spent in 1 year. Similarly we are outspending Clubs in our own League by x10/20/25 times. The truth is we spend too much time measuring ourselves against England rather than measuring against our actual opponents. We need to get more out of what we have and get more from our academy because what we have is more than enough in Scotland and probably enough in Europe.

Anyone identified a plausible reason why Celtic failed to build since January ?

I’m beginning to think they actually want to breathe life into the zombies.

  18. Nothing surprises me with regards the other clubs in this stinking bigoted wee country . They hate us too . I am surprised that some thought they would back us in our quest for fair play , god even the wee teams who lost out big time financially ,were conspicuous by there silence . So no surprise there . We stand alone , every encouragement to batter the living daylights out of them . But not the celtic , we stagnate from a position of strength , instead of improving the positions that we all know need improved . Christian and Emilio ,played well on Saturday , but both are too wee , sadly we would get caught out with them , the two young yins at ch will improve over time ,but they are not ready yet , that reads us needing 3 quality buys , KT will do just grand . Broonie needs help in the middle of the park , that all depends on which ntcham turns up , didn,t do much on Saturday . Rogic grand player , McGregor not too bad .jamsie read as ntcham , Sinclair ditto, . sadly not much support for broonie in any of those 4 . But we’ve done it with them in the team before , but the Huns have bought big boys , we will see . In attack perfect , couldn,t wish for better . A few quality buys needed would ,keep us top of the pile , and burst the scousers bubble ,

Now that would be grand . H H

    Absolutely worth a try, HH

Did Mr Stein not shuffle the pack slightly, within a short period of time we were kings of Europe.

I’m not saying that that would happen again, but a KT type of shield in front of the defence, and gk, could transform our team on the pitch, and ease the worry levels, which are rising, amongst the support, it could prove to be a master stroke. My fear is that Brendan is going to be bitten by the Celtic idealist bug, that saw a host of Celtic manager’s sacked, especially in the early 90’s, for trying to emulate the mythical ‘Celtic Way’, that even Mr Stein’s Celtic team’s didn’t achieve every week. Maybe, Stevie G knows what Brendan’s Achilles heel is.

Anyway, good luck with Resolution 12, although I think it would take 53,000 empty seats to propel the PLC to back that campaign, and its to avoid that exact scenario, that I think is the “real” reason that Brendan was recruited, I have a horrible feeling that, Resolution 12 will fail, then shortly after that, the PLC will no longer need Brendan, and he’ll be dispatched with a golden fudge brown envelope and, a RD 2 will be unearthed, my money is on Malky McKay, especially with the warm backing he was given from Brendan, when MM joined the SFA.

I’m certainly of the opinion now that someone at Celtic has decided that winning the league is the only show in town. And that to do so does not require the improvements that BR is demanding.

Keep our heads in front of the huns, that’ll keep the troops happy. Even better if it can somehow be exciting and come down to a decider,eh?

We saw the huns drowning in their own morass, and we’ve thrown them a lifebelt. Time and time again.

I’d have thrown them an anchor. And the contents of their stands on matchday.
