Central defence left open to criticism

333

Once Partick Thistle equalised, it was clear Celtic had plenty of spare gears to move through.  The game went to plan for the champions, even down to the manner in which the Thistle goal was lost.  Both central defenders left themselves open to criticism, highlighting the glaring deficiency in the team right now.  Whether the Belgian will play little or any part in the solution remains to be seen.

In five weeks, we face St Johnstone in the League Cup quarter final.  Cup games away from home are never the easiest, but by then we will have had a chance to flex our muscles in the title race, wetting the appetite for a challenge in the cups.

Artificial pitches are disliked by footballers for various reasons, so I have sympathy for the Newco manager, who yesterday called for them to be kept from top flight games, as they are in England and formerly were in Scotland.  They are cheap to maintain and provide an income for clubs, who hire them out, but the technology is still not up to the job.

How long before Motherwell, St Mirren, St Johnstone and others make the move?

What was it got Kenny Millar sacked by Livingston after two league games?  Results, tactical competency?  Or, judging by his mannerisms at Celtic Park two weeks ago, maybe a publicly overbearing attitude towards his players.

See my earlier comment. He is no better than what we have-far from it,in fact.

Bring your boots to the next game,it’s the new Paradise Windfall.

I’ve seriously had it with this. Way beyond a joke now. The fans are having the pish ripped right out of us.

Sums up my feelings too, reading the official Celtic history at the moment and it seems we have previous in board interference and not building from positions of strength, Who’d a thunk it?

Anyway, off to Manchester to hook up with an old mate after work.

  3. the glorious balance sheet on

Would be surprised if we added another unproven and inexperienced prospect to a part of the team that’s already riddled with them.

    Let’s see what happens.

Wonder when we can expect the derisory bid stories from Aberdeen. Aberdeen don’t have an active English bid so will be interesting to see what McInnes would do with the money with only 10 days to go.

Aberdeen need players but is 2.5m a fair price?

Celtic appear not to be content with signing players who have a past with serious injury, they now actively pursue them!

  6. Last point to make re AEK Athens .

They seem to be the Athens good guys .

I spotted banners denouncing “all racisim” – against “violence “- they had Palestinian and St Pauli flags.

They also had a couple of Union flags but this was the London branch of fans.

So I wish them good luck and hope they progress.

We should have beaten them though.

  7. I haven’t noticed McKenna anytime a sheep game is on…..prob cause he’s been injured….must be after an experienced CB as well….

My “piece “ , that day consisted of 2 well fired buttered rolls with chopped ham pork & beetroot. Delicious.

  12. Is it just me being cynical? Or has the manager been told there’s no centre back coming in, hence the need for an olive branch to a player that actually refused to play for us,

Something drastically wrong at Celtic park right now, needs sorted and sorted quick style.

There doesn’t even need to be a problem, mate. The perception that there is a problem-and a big one!-is enough to spread the poison.

This should not be happening. We have a successful and much-loved manager. He has brought huge amounts of success-and with that,INCOME!-to the club, and it seems he is being shown who’s boss?

It makes no sense at all, mate.

Like us and St. Pauli, AEK were founded by immigrants. I think the ‘K’ stands for Konstantinople. They were founded by Greeks displaced from Turkey.

  18. Purely coincidence that ? rolls in from the mists with a word of the day post almost immediately following a “Freddie Starr ate my Hamster” post. ?

Scott McKenna. Typical, robust, unspectacular Scottish type centre half. Really don’t see how he fits the requirement of improving the squad with quality. No better than what we have,

  21. Listen that Sun Paper is loaded with Hun Supporters, Black,Leckie, for starter’s,and throw in Traynor, the main man,and I think a lot of our supporters need to get a grip of themselves, the stick that players like Hendry,Commper, McKenna, even Boyata, take isn’t very nice,I say if a player pulls on the Hoops, then he needs to be shown respect, and if it doesn’t work fine then move them on,and a lot forget that the present Celtic Board are the reason for not making quality signings, and I don’t think for a minute that all the board members and shareholders are happy the way the club is being run,ie players recruitment, maybe need a coupe, and apart from Desmond, are there any Celtic supporters who have cash who could takeover.

  23. Reasons for signing McKenna?

Scottish – manager has said he wants a Scottish core to the team so will always try to sign who he regards as the best young available players

Age – 21 years old so plenty of development potential that the manager thinks he can bring out

Different style – a more ‘traditional’ head it, kick it, tackle CH to the more modern ball playing type that we currently have (Ajer, Hendry)

Left sided – probably the most appealing aspect of McKenna, at the moment is he’s naturally left footed and if the manager wants to play three at the back he fits into the left side position

If he signs I reckon it’ll be the end of Simunovic and we will still need a more experienced CH if Boyata (hopefully) leaves

  24. THE Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) Executive Committee are expected to ratify the sale of Bloemfontein Celtic and welcome the new club owners into the football family.

Celtic are under new ownership after incumbent owner Max Tshabalala sold the club to businesswoman Sinki Leshabane and Moeketsi Mosola, who is also the City of Tshwane manager.

Though the value of the transaction has not been revealed, the historic, but

cash-strapped club are believed to have been sold for a figure in the region of R45 million.

But any proposed sale has to be submitted to the Executive Committee first for approval.

Until such a process has been completed, the league may not recognise the new owners.

Among the constitutional obligations for acquisition and new ownership is to satisfy the PSL executive of the future financial stability and sustainability of the member club.

And all employment contracts concluded by the member club shall be honoured, notwithstanding any pending transaction.

The PSL won’t unreasonably withhold or delay approval if the application meets all the requirements.

But financial stability factor could be key in the ratification process, given the challenges that have now led to the sale of the club.

Truth is, the sale came as no surprise after Tshabalala publicly admitted to his financial woes.

It is no secret that Celtic have been struggling financially in recent months, with allegations of unpaid staff salaries being at the heart of the club’s troubles.

Failure to secure a new major sponsor also didn’t make things any easier for Tshabalala.

And, according to the South African Player’s Union, the club faced liquidation after financial institution Standard Bank filed a High Court application for a provisional liquidation of the club.

Leshabane is not new to football as she is also the owner of ABC Motsepe League side, Mangaung United.

On the field though, Celtic have come out of the starting blocks with a triumphant roar, winning three of their opening matches under the guidance of coach Steve Komphela.
