Central defence left open to criticism

333

Once Partick Thistle equalised, it was clear Celtic had plenty of spare gears to move through.  The game went to plan for the champions, even down to the manner in which the Thistle goal was lost.  Both central defenders left themselves open to criticism, highlighting the glaring deficiency in the team right now.  Whether the Belgian will play little or any part in the solution remains to be seen.

In five weeks, we face St Johnstone in the League Cup quarter final.  Cup games away from home are never the easiest, but by then we will have had a chance to flex our muscles in the title race, wetting the appetite for a challenge in the cups.

Artificial pitches are disliked by footballers for various reasons, so I have sympathy for the Newco manager, who yesterday called for them to be kept from top flight games, as they are in England and formerly were in Scotland.  They are cheap to maintain and provide an income for clubs, who hire them out, but the technology is still not up to the job.

How long before Motherwell, St Mirren, St Johnstone and others make the move?

What was it got Kenny Millar sacked by Livingston after two league games?  Results, tactical competency?  Or, judging by his mannerisms at Celtic Park two weeks ago, maybe a publicly overbearing attitude towards his players.

  1. Why all the negativity and moaning. If Brendan wants Mckenna then that will be enough for me…….Lets face it the BAR is set pretty low in the centre-half dept right now so he would not have to turn like Maldini or Baresi to improve our team.

We have a number of experienced CHs at the club, none of whom are playing for one reason or another.

We have two first-pick thoroughly-inexperienced CHs who are being destroyed for the want of experience beside them.

Signing a 21yo is not a means of repairing our backline, not unless he’s a Kompany or VVD.

Don’t disagree hence the reason I said that irrespective whether McKenna signs or not we need an experienced CH if Boyata leaves. Arguably we need one even if Boyata stays but that’s unlikely to happen.

McKenna, like Ajer, like Hendry, are long term projects. They’ll get plenty of chances to shine in the team but could be doing with some guidance on the pitch.

  4. I think McKenna would be a good signing for a couple of reasons, he’s a good CH, well able and used to the SPL. He will see signing for Celtic as a step up in his career. Not just a stepping stone to the EPL. At 21 there is more than enough time for him to improve further, especially under BR guidance. Lastly he knows how to wind Morelos up. HH.

P.S, It will really piss the sheep off.

I haven’t seen enough of McKenna to comment other than to say I don’t think he’ll be pushed around the way our other CB’s can be at times. I think he would handle the likes of the Hertz CF Ikpeazu (sp) and Lafferty’s physical challenge.

  6. I’ve been Brendan’s biggest supporter from day 1.

If he’s truly interested in Mckenna , then the growing concerns I have re his ability to recognise a good defender, will I suspect, have been with good reason.

The guy is an extremely poor defender. Worse than Boyata, Ajer, Jozo or Hendry.

I didn’t think we could possibly get any worse than Hendry. Now this.

    Worrying times.

  7. Oh btw, If the deal means Christie going the other way so be it. He deserves 1st team football but he’s never going to get it with us. They like him up there so its a win win.

  8. Mention of Bloemfontein Celtic reminds me of the clip posted on here years ago of their fans singing and dancing in the stand at a game. Really uplifting especially the wee lad who was swinging his arms around out of time with the throng behind him.

Maybe someone still has that clip to hand.

  9. Once again picking up the nuances from posters like Mastyand BMCUW,that somehow PL is to blame for the management team allegedly bidding for Mc Kenna and the Dutch guy.I really find it so difficult to get my head around this nonsense.Into the bargain the combined fees for both come in at around 10 million. Also, both players being slaughtered, one for being Scottish, and no better than what we have, the other a sick note.

Meanwhile the Management team sail somehow above this. Not a smidgeon of blame seemingly being aimed at Brendan or Congerton.

On Mc Kenna.Only paid any attention to the boy in the Hun game. Before he went off,he looked very commanding in the air,and strong in the tackle. They cant all be lovely footballers.Lovren at Liverpool,an example.A bruiser. Not saying we should buy him,but just how many on here have seen the boy play consistently for Aberdeen and feel they can judge.

Our recruitment this summer has been a shambles. Blame shouldn’t be apportioned to one individual but to a collective. A complacent senior management team who struggle to conclude deals, a pissed off manager who ran off to the press and created a sh1tstorm in the process, a Head of Recruitment who from the outside, and given Celtic do not communicate with their support that’s all we can go on, looks devoid of any ideas on how to scout good value players from anywhere other than the SPFL, Man City Academy or his wee black book of previous players he’s worked with.

They have 10 days to sort it, as an eternal optimist I live in hope they do. The consequences if they don’t hardly bear thinking about.

  13. !!Bada Bing!! on 21st August 2018 10:53 am

They said Hibs valued McGinn at £5m, he went for £2.75m.

McKenna will cost £4-5m, he’s on a 5 year contract and they won’t want to sell to us. In the end it’ll be the player’s agent who will tell them that his client wants to leave for Celtic (if he does) and the negotiations will then begin.

Of course you are entitled to your view, but mine is that we are playing two inexperienced kids. Signing a third in McKenna is not likely to be the new VVD

Also,we have another two CHs who seem to suffer from more injuries than is really what I would like from a Celtic player. Both of whom have played more than our projected new signing in the last two seasons.

So,no,TB,this is nothing to do with personality,or why they are two months late.nor who is responsible for signing players. This is about neither of these players being the answer. Or even close to it.

  18. McKenna has made 70 senior appearances, just over half of which have been in the SPFL with Aberdeen. We don’t need another project CH. Would rather see us blood someone from our Academy. Definitely not worth what Aberdeen would expect us to pay.

Just how low are our expectations now re signings ?

  19. BMCUW,

Sorry mate,in your post at 9.17 this morning, you infer that Brendan is being let down by those higher up.As I said,I cannot understand this thinking. Its not those above who have scouted the two CHs now being mentioned. The responsibility for this lies squarely at the Manager, and his teams door.Their record of finding suitable CHs has been woeful, and I am being kind when I say that.As much as I love Brendan,I can see flaws in his scouting of defenders.Everyone cant be perfect, but apportioning the blame elsewhere helps nobody.

Never mind Scott McKenna get his namesake Paul up to hypnotise the board, and tell them to sign decent players.

Just how low are our expectations now re signings ?

As low as SMSM can convince Celtic supporters that they are.

Then when they put it out there, they invent £10M asking prices to fuel the made up stuff on the internet.

Next it’ll ibe Celtic prepare ‘new bid’ for McKenna it all adds to the consternation.

  23. Other than Celtic games, I see very few SPFL games. So a question for those who see a lot more than I do – who is the best CH in Scotland? I was going to say outwith our own players but I assume there are others out there better than JH and Ajer (be that due to inexperience or whatever else).

If there is a bid in for McKenna, is it because he is the best that our forwards come up against? For 3-5 million, I assume we could buy defenders from most tier two leagues in Europe as well as teams in the lower half of La Liga etc.

I often wonder why we don’t sign more Spanish and Italian players from the teams outwith the top 4-5 clubs in each league. They are not awash with money and there is a huge talent pool to choose from compared to Scotland. Population of Spain is around 60 million, likewise Italy. Oh, they also put a lot of emphasis on coaching good defenders.

This is where you and I have to disagree, mate. Which is a shame,we had been doing so well recently!

Seriously,I don’t know who is responsible for some recent very poor signings. Neither do you.

You read into things,I read into things,we interpret things differently.

One thing we agree on for sure-our recent signings have not been remotely average. It has to stop.

  25. BATEENBHOY,

70 appearances for Aberdeen,4 International caps, and probably Scotlands CH for years to come.I would think the boy is a lot more than a project.

Is he good enough?Thats something we wont know until he plays for us.

The whole point is,the “In Brendan we trust”mantra, seems to be absent when we look at CHs.Something I have been saying for a while.

What I will say about the boy,I would rather have him battering into the SPFL hammer throwers like Lafferty etc, than what we have now.I mentioned earlier, that at Liverpool,VVD is the footballer,Lovren is the bruiser.
