Central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager

Match 31 in Celtic’s domestic season: Motherwell at home, 29 wins, one draw and no defeats behind them. It all looks straightforward tomorrow. Right?

A reminder, if needed, that while Motherwell shipped seven goals during the week, St Mirren did the same to Gordon Strachan’s Celtic before knocking us out the Scottish Cup a week later.

It was also Motherwell, at Celtic Park, who ended Scottish football’s longest winning run of league games in 2004. Celtic had just beaten Barcelona but were held by Motherwell to halt the run at 26 consecutive victories.

Runs like this often end against teams with nothing in their locker but desperate defending. You’ll see that from the visitors tomorrow, whose players will surely have had a word with each other about collective responsibility.

Take nothing for granted. Celtic have worked hard to get into this situation in the league but they will have to work just as hard to maintain momentum.

How does Brendan do that? I suspect by shuffling the pack again. We have genuine competition across the team. The central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager in case he drops them and they don’t get another sight of the pitch for weeks.

Full backs feeling a little weary late in the game? Don’t show it, Emilio and Cristian are ready and waiting. James Forrest and Patrick Roberts are both delivering at the highest standard of their careers, otherwise they would not be considered.

While Leigh Griffiths is injured, Moussa Dembele will be confident he will get the opportunity to score three consecutive hat-tricks, surely an unprecedented achievement. It’s only Scott Brown and Scott Sinclair who can be confident of being included when fit.

The former, because he is captain and leader of the team, the latter because he has had the most profound impact on Scottish football this season, unequivocally Player of the Year.

You are looking forward to seeing these guys do their stuff tomorrow, I can tell.

Fairhill…. that really was a great period for music… and the amount of really great stuff was pretty remarkable for a small country ….. Never Understand by the Mary Chain is still one of the best pop singles ever.

and I dont recall if anyone mentioned Blue Nile …. Tinseltown in the Rain ….great single

Although… my favourite scottish band (and maybe my favourite band, period) … The Trashcan Sinatras.

  2. EDB . Happy birthday , hope it’s been a gid yin .

Any word on Stuart Armstrong’s fitness ?

I see the bookies are catching up on this season’s best bet . Celtic -2 . Generally been even money or a tad better . Now a general 8/11.

    Marspapa ….

LM has a fair following over here … but, honestly, was not someone I was ever crazy about ….not quite sure why (as I love folk and Celtic stuff, generally) … I dont know how to explain it except to say that her stuff was perhaps a bit to ‘new age’y sounding for my tastes ….

    Just read Phil’s latest.

Jeez there are an awful lot of blogs these days that go on and on about the strength of this or that legal team!

I can understand it to a certain extent as when advice is given from someone reputable and who knows what they are doing then that can be a factor, but only when that advice is actually followed.

If King & Co are seriously suggesting going down the mediation route then (a) they have to be in a forum where mediation actually comes into play (and they are not in charge of that) and (b) they have to have a position to mediate from to start with. I.E. There has to be some common ground somewhere!

As far as I can see, if the three go straight to court then there is no mediation only negotiation while the court clock and bill is running, unless both sides agree to bring in a professional mediator at the same time and that is expensive.

Further, any manner of mediation will not stop the three attempting to arrest money on the dependence of their court action should they so choose.

In a Tribunal case there is a mediation process of sorts built in, but if the three don’t go that route then that is the end of that.

Make no mistake, if the three go to court and arrest then there will have to be a deal done quickly to prevent this becoming a far bigger problem. Unless of course some unknown benefactor chooses to pony up some cash to settle their claim.

From what I read of BFDJ’s take on the legalities of it all ………. He is a moron!!

Marspapa … had forgotten about that song …and a great live version …thanks.

I thought he had a really interesting voice … much preferred his voice to the perhaps more lauded late Billy MacKenzie … who, one or two songs apart, I could take or leave…

Well done to the Celts today, bringing a win home against the Scottish odds. Make’s my heart smile.

Whoever decided to bring game hardened pros back for this one, good on you? I hope it was Tom McIntyre. Saw the team and said, we’ll win that.

Remember the girl on television many years ago who was asked at a friendly, “does it matter who wins?” She said, ” we’re Celtic, every game matters.”

    6IAR!, still six to go

  11. Hi Bhoys

I always worry about playing Motherwell. I’ve always considered them our bogey team. But tomorrow holds no fear with Brendan in charge and big Moussa on the charge. I pray to ghod I haven’t jinxed us. It feels like we are setting a new record every week and I for one am loving it.

How many times have they managed to wriggle out of a tight spot when educated people were saying it was looking good for the people/organisation challenging them, oldclub or newclub, now how are they managing to do that? Yes I am seriously annoyed how they manage that, control the news output associated with it and still have the media terrified/conflicted and therefore say nothing. This in my opinion extends into professionals who have had to deal with them

  13. GFTB-working tomorrow so my auld dad gets my seat tomorrow,am probably going to be home in time to go myself, but a know he loves going again :-))

  18. I used to do work for The Prince’s Trust and I had to interview Carol Laula. After that I got chatting to her manager about music and he mentioned he was in a band. “which band?” Oh no one you would have heard off…The Silencers.. I’ve seen them live a few times including one brilliant gig in Greenock… Ah the Greenock gig says he, that was &*(&ing mental it was in a fecking disco?..

Remember reading about you saying your dad going to the games, that’s probably more important that BR has reignited our peers as much as the youngsters, I have witnessed both as well…..

    Fred C….

I was the odd sub with CC as a 16yr old, J McG was obviously ages with you and my brothers, as I wasn’t getting a full 90mins on a Saturday he went out of his way to get me to play on a Sunday, I thought it was brilliant then but as I grew up I realise it was actually a great compliment, always had a great enthusiasm for the game and could pass a ball……. But like many a good player like J McG it wasn’t ability that kept them back ….. A bit of luck would help (and like most guys avoid wummin, apart from Lisa Hague I have never known a “good lady” to help a footballers career :-)

  20. One thing no-one seems to have mentioned is the reputational damage Sevco will be sustaining right now.

“What reputation?” you may well ask, and whilst its true their death (aka “financial collapse”) will be dimly known to people in England, the “resignations” of the Ibrox 3 will focus minds on just what a basket case the club/company/holding vehicle is.

MW, DW, and Big Francie are well-connected in England, and MW and DW in particular seem to be reasonably respected. You can bet your bottom Sevco Dollar they will be telling all and sundry their side of the story – and, with the LMA involved, pretty soon there won’t be a manger in England that will be unaware of what a snake Dave King is.

Might well make managerial targets here and abroad think twice before getting involved. Might even make loans and signing more difficult. Particularly if they google “glib and shameless liar” – just on the off chance…
