Challenge back for title chasers

250

After the delights of the League Cup Final, attention in Scottish football returns to league action this weekend, with the champions having a Sunday noon kick-off at Dundee United.  This is the first time we have played United since January 2023, when goals from Jota and an Aaron Mooy penalty were enough to take the points back to Glasgow.

United are back to a more accustomed 4th placed in the Premiership table.  They had an epic encounter of their own last weekend, losing 4-3 at Motherwell, in a match they dominated.  It would be a mistake, however, to assume they are porous at the back.

Since a 2-2 draw on the opening game of the season, they have only lost more than one goal in five games this season across all competitions.  Three of those games were against Motherwell.  They manage to stop most opponents from creating too many good chances.

Aberdeen are on a five game losing streak which has seen their title aspirations replaced with hopes of a top three finish.  They face Hibs tomorrow, no doubt still suffering PTSD from conceding two added-time equalisers at Easter Road a month ago.  Jimmy Thelin is having his credentials examined.

After their second 3-3 victory over Celtic in 2024, Newco have spent the week reflecting on how improved they are.  That was a perilous condition for them in April, we’ll see if have changed their internal narrative this time.

  2. CELTIC40ME @ 2:34 PM,

There has been an improvement in the European results this season but we were not a million miles away last season.

The improved recruitment in 2024 and the players “bedding in” has been a huge factor.

We are now talking about fine margins, where huge improvements in effort and resources give you small gains in European terms.

For me the Board have been reluctant to take the risk this involves.

However trust between the Manager & Staff, the Board and the Principal shareholder is at an all time high, and this working together is giving us huge benefits.

    Hail Hail

Good straightforward summation – everything covered.

I sincerely hope that taking into consideration our strong financial position we, as you say, don’t let this huge chance pass. We can strengthen from a position of strength.

Just a thought – I wonder what we could bring in if we were able to sell Bernabei, Lagerbielke, Nawrocki, Palma & Welsh in January – £10- £12 m? Whatever we get will feel like free money as all five are playing no part at present and unlikely to do so in future. HH

We finished 4th last season with one win in a dead rubber. We should finish comfortably in the equivalent of third place this season, nine or ten points compared to four. The improvement since has been clear and obvious.

Are you putting it all down to the January and Summer windows? The basis of the teams that got results was here when Brendan came and before those windows. Since then our two new guaranteed starters and our best player in Europe have been development players. Sounds like an endorsement of our transfer strategy over the last few years.

You dont think Brendan has improved as a manger in europe this season? I certainly do and I take my hat off to him for it.

Didnt you say our Jan 2024 window was a disaster?

I still think Nawrocki has a chance and I wouldn’t want to sell a player like Welsh. The rest are all young enough to bring in some sort of fee and its been proven recently that failure at celtic doesnt make you unsuitable for other clubs.

I hope we’ll hold our nerve and carry on looking to the future. If we look at 18 months as a realistic time horizon for a development player showing their potential at Celtic we’ll be looking at talent that will not mature until our present manager might be gone. I’d hardly be surprised if Brendan would push back agains player who will never be particularly productive, its probably why the development players he’s keen on are in a higher price bracket, but hopefully Kuhns performances this season might make him a bit more open to the idea of signing more prospects at a lower price.

  8. Why would we not want to sell a player like Welsh? There doesn’t seem to be much point in keeping him.

  9. Personally, I’d keep Welsh. Sure he’s not the best, but the lhad is a true Celt, and it help with our homegrown talent pool. Don’t want to keep him back if he finds a move which suits him, I like they guy

Financially, we dont need the money

  10. CELTIC40ME @ 3:12 PM,

Why you would wish to belittle our win against Arne Slot’s Feyenoord is beyond me.

Last year at Celtic Park we were unfortunate to lose to Lazio, we drew with a excellent Athletico who drew on all their dark arts and we beat Feyenoord.

It was those performances that had me purring about the return of Fortress Celtic Park and I believe we have seen just that.

We have used a business model for recruitment for many a long season….

Yet a great factor in our improvement in Europe this season, after arguably losing our MVP, was the signing of Nic Kuhn.

Looking at his potential, developing the player and having him UCL ready at the beginning of the season.

That is what player recruitment and development should be about.

Wait to you see Engels in Europe next season.

Has Brendan Rodgers improved as a manager?

Well, that’s a great question and not one that I can easily answer.

Brendan for me improves as a person and that’s one of the reasons I like him so much.

He is obviously a great coach and in that constant development in necessary.

Yet one of his superpowers is the right staff, and he’s definitely improved the team there from Ange’s.

    Hail Hail

I would go for Uefa rules on home grown players to add to the quota !

  15. Prestonpans bhoys on

Think this is still the case:

How many homegrown players are needed in a Champions League squad?

Out of the 25, eight places are reserved exclusively for “locally trained players” or homegrown players. Out of the eight, not more than four can be “association-trained players” and the rest must be “club-trained”.

  16. Clement holding court about the image of Scottish football abroad, he needs every single decision that goes for his team rammed down his throat,by every club he plays against, he is playing the victim bigtime, 5 days later this is still his reaction, they will win by a big margin tomorrow guaranteed

  18. I should like to mention the contributions of John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan in our era of success.

John has been first team coach since 2014 and has been a key contributor in all our triumphs since that date.

He has worked under Ronny, Brendan, Neil, Ange and Brendan again. He has been valued by all of them and has shared in nine title wins, six Scottish cups and eight League cup wins. A total of twenty-three honours -a figure that could increase to twenty-five this year – a trophy haul exactly the same as record-holders Bobby Lennox and James Forrest.

Gavin has been in post since 2020 and has worked under Neil Lennon, Ange Posticoglou and Brendan Rodgers. He too has been valued by all of them and has shared in three titles, two Scottish cups and three League cups. A total of eight honours – a figure that could increase to ten this year – the same figure that Brendan is on at this present moment.

It is not too long ago that John and Gavin were being routinely scapegoated by some – I’m glad to say that has now disappeared.

They are predominately background figures but integral to the success of the club. Brendan routinely mentions the input and importance of his coaches.

I think they do a great job and the fact that they have been retained by every incoming manager says much for their expertise in the role, and their character.HH

  19. KT has played so many good games since he left Celtic that you could count them on the one finger.

Move KT out of the One horse Scottish football environment and he gets brutally found out.

Move BR out of the same environment and he too gets brutally found out and the images of BR as he stood on the touchline clapping his team to relegation a couple of years after they had won the EPL Title were of Pedro’s barking caravans material.

McCoist knows that Celtic fans are there to be wound up cause Tims are no longer cute enough to outsmart the cheeky chappy.

Lennon is trying to set up Wullie Collum by putting him into the firing line were the buck is ‘directly’ at WC’s door and he cannot hide behind the big boy did it and ran away cheap punkisms that he is utilising.

McCoist is speaking more truth about the charlatan Michael Nicholson than any Celtic fan will speak. Apart from the fearless Joe McHugh. https://videocelts.com

And who would trust a single word from any Celtic supporter who buys season tickets from a pro EBT Cheating criminality cover up PLC Board who went along with the same club lie cover up in 2016 by putting old Rangers ticket prices onto the tickets of newly promoted club Sevco, to reinstate the Old Firm?

When Ally McCoist speaks more truth than ANY of the current Celtic supporters, Joe McHugh excepted, then maybe Timdom should think about putting the padlocks on themselves and throwing away the key?

Tims of today are as deceitful as Trade Union leader Mick Lynch.

ML sells himself as being driven by the principals and integrity as the Irish Socialist Hero Rebel of 1916 – James Connolly.

But how can this be true, when the very same ML watched on as Keir Starmer and his misnamed Labour Party as the opposition to the Tory’s – Agreed 100% with the Tory’s support of the genocide of Palestinians which the whole world watched live on the internet, and Ml said not a word about KS’s support for this genocide, just shut up an vote for KS?

ML told the British voters that they had to “Grow up and get over themselves and vote for KS’s Labour Party to get rid of the evil Tory’s.”

ML said nothing about the Palestinians being genocided or KS’s 100% support for this evil, as ML was paraded around every mainstream news station- Shilling for KS!

Red flags should have been waving on top of folks television’s when you see pro genocide KS being courted by every mainstream fake news channel whilst each channel was 100% shilling for KS, in the build up to the UK General Election which was vote rigged to ensure KS’s election and the continuation of the genocide, which ML has yet to call out KS’s horrible support of.

PS, During that General Election, every political party, Lab, Lib, Con, SNP, GRE, REF, SF, etc, all had more than 20 hrs+ live TV opportunities – and not one of these party’s said a single word about the Palestinian genocide.

So in effect – ALL of these party’s are the SAME party. Wow!

PS, Palestine was stabbed in the back by supposed Muslim country, Turkey, which seems to be full of Turkey’s.

PS, The only party who would have spoken bravely and honestly about the genocide were 100% BANNED from all fake news opportunities – The Workers Party of Britain, who despite the oppressive measures taken against this party, over 250,000 people voted for them and the WPB were the only party standing for election who weren’t allowed in to observe the vote counting. And this week KS said he is thinking about cancelling next years English Council Elections – fearing a wipe out? Or selling you all out to WEF, WHO, and other scumbagerry.

If you are not allowed to vote pro Evil politicians out of office what does that leave? IRA territory?

    Interesting times ahead.
