Challenge back for title chasers

250

After the delights of the League Cup Final, attention in Scottish football returns to league action this weekend, with the champions having a Sunday noon kick-off at Dundee United.  This is the first time we have played United since January 2023, when goals from Jota and an Aaron Mooy penalty were enough to take the points back to Glasgow.

United are back to a more accustomed 4th placed in the Premiership table.  They had an epic encounter of their own last weekend, losing 4-3 at Motherwell, in a match they dominated.  It would be a mistake, however, to assume they are porous at the back.

Since a 2-2 draw on the opening game of the season, they have only lost more than one goal in five games this season across all competitions.  Three of those games were against Motherwell.  They manage to stop most opponents from creating too many good chances.

Aberdeen are on a five game losing streak which has seen their title aspirations replaced with hopes of a top three finish.  They face Hibs tomorrow, no doubt still suffering PTSD from conceding two added-time equalisers at Easter Road a month ago.  Jimmy Thelin is having his credentials examined.

After their second 3-3 victory over Celtic in 2024, Newco have spent the week reflecting on how improved they are.  That was a perilous condition for them in April, we’ll see if have changed their internal narrative this time.

That red card is as bad as it gets

    Former Motherwell defender on Sportsound

What we have is a referee who thinks that is a red card, and a VAR who thinks it’s not a red. That’s two referees with different opinions on it. Was it brutality? No. Was it excessive force? No. It’s not violent conduct that’s going to injure. He grabs him and shoves him away.

*Guess who Motherwell play on Boxing Day and have a player now suspended

  11. Clement: we had more shots, we had more throw ins, we had more yellow cards, we had more corners, our players have better hair, we had more tackles, we have more ex players on the bbc and sky, we had more ebts, we owed more money to HMRC, we have more loving cups, we have more bikes, we are more loyal, we have Wet Wet Wet and Colin Montgomery and that guy out of Grey’s Anatomy, we have most of the refs in our back pocket, we should have won……….but you didn’t 🤣☘️🇮🇪

  13. I penned this article for an Aussie sports website about our world’s most successful club accolade. Clunks linked to it earlier. Our club’s not out there shouting about it from the rooftops (like another club* did) but it marks a momentous time in our Celtic-following history. BTW, the editors changed my words from ‘most successful’ to most prolific, but when I pointed out you could be prolific without success, they changed it back to my original. HH

  20. Thanks for the feedback on the story lads; much appreciated.

Machrie44 – my original draft read:

So while managers like O’Neill, Strachan, Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers…’

The sub-editor added the (wrong) prefix. Their bad, but mine was omitting Neil Lennon’s marvellous contribution to our on-field dominance.

    ——-

PS: Arzani having a really good game the now in the Melb derby. Tilio still injured at City.

Wur scouts should be looking at the young Victory left foot midfielder Ryan Teague; cucumber-cool.

To those not wishing to see the return of KT,what about really going for a bit of star quality?.

Looks like Jota will be available in January. We are in the market for another winger.Kuhn and Jota on either wing would be a sight worth seeing.

Not beyond us,if the will is there.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Jota is the most talented winger we’ve had in many a year and, at least in my opinion, the most exciting player since Henrik. But would he be an automatic start ahead of Maeda in a BR team?

  22. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone, particularly anyone who has lost anyone dear to them over the last year.

Best wishes and speedy recovery to Auldheid

  24. Deniabhoy,

About Jota, your views on him I agree with totally.

On Maeda,it should not really be a problem. We are actively looking for another winger, and Jota can play left or right, brilliantly,so Brendan able to rotate more.Injuries, rotation, resting,we would always have 3 top wingers available.

For me,its a no brained, and I am sure he would jump at the chance.Rennes are not paying him astronomical wages.CL now a bigger draw than before for players. We have a strong possibility of having 4 games coming up,then the qualifier. We need players in January.Qualifier too early for summer signings, with all that goes with it.

  25. TurkeyBhoy – if it happened, it would be absolutely brilliant. I assume at the moment he is not the player he was first time around. No reason, however, that he cannot regain top form once he is back in an environment that truly cherishes him.

  26. That farce last night.Dear God.All first half Michael Stewart was on about that idiot with the whistle.Counted at least 10 or 12 advantages,he pulled back for free kick.Sometimes,30 yards back. His demeanour was like a wee overblown, pompous Popinjay, strutting around.

Where do they dig them up?.

I see James Forrest has an article out about what I was saying yesterday about Me Coist.Celtic should take him to task for his insinuations and innuendo, demand he grovel out a full apology.
