Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

  5. Mark Hateley believes that a remake of a movie in which a family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future would be like a new shining.

  6. Anybody wanting some real good laughs should visit HunMedia. Pure Comedy Gold. I haven’t stopped laughing for days, read the following for a sample of what can be mined, this is from a guy called GlowingHeid:

When Sparta was under attack from the Persians they were sent a threat

“You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your hash farms, I will seize your ass, slay your goats, rape your oldest concubines, pillage your cubits of wheat and riot in your city centre.”

This has so much resonance for the WAR today! For we are at WAR! Make no bones about that! We need a Churchill figure in the Ibrox boardroom.

The Spartans leader replied “If”. And it was a big IF. The biggest IF ever. In fact when he said it he nearly spat in someone’s face! This is how big an IF it was! A really big one! I say IF to O’Liewell, to O’Regan and O’Doncaster! We should all erect giant bed sheets- go NOW and take yer maws bed sheets and write IF oan them wae yer crayons! Go! We must fight back like the Spartan Spartans!

This should be our reply to the scum trying to destroy our history and take our title’s. There are so many If’s in their threats we should tell them where to go and start questioning why everyday the fenian red tops are spreading lie’s about us with Celtic staff at the forefront of the muck spreading. Why is someone at our club not defending us? Its not as if there not enough to defend! Feels like the SFA are black mailing us with threats to not give us our licence unless we take OReegans/O’Lawells punishments. Well screw that – Ally or Green need to beome Churchillian Spartans and stand up and speak out about this now or we are screwed forever!

By the way the Spartans won even though they were vastly out numbered!

  13. Sevco will be in the draw for the first round of the Scottish Communities League Cup when it is made on Friday.

The Third Division side will be unseeded as they enter the competition. 29 teams from the Scottish Football League’s three divisions will be joined in the draw by SPL club Dundee.

Sevco’s participation is dependent on the Scottish Football Association granting Charles Green’s newco the necessary membership to play football.

Alex Salmond will conduct the draw, which will take place at Stenhousemuir’s Ochilview Park at 12.30pm on Friday.

First round games are currently scheduled to be played on Saturday, August 4.

The seven Scottish Premier League clubs not participating in European competition this season will enter at the second round stage. Celtic, Dundee United, Hearts, Motherwell and St Johnstone join in the third round.

The League Cup trophy has returned to Ibrox a record 27 times since the competition’s formation in the 1946/47 season. Celtic have won on 14 occasions, followed by Aberdeen (five), Hearts (four), Hibernian, Dundee, East Fife (three) and six other winners.

Kilmarnock are the current holders, having won the tournament for the first time in their history when they defeated Celtic 1-0 at Hampden in March this year.
