Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

Seriously though, Im not writing this to get on our boards back or anything like that. This season is a difficult time for them, reality tells us that our own income may be reduced because there is not a lot of competition for us next season. The way out of this of course would be CL qualification which would increase both our income and our profile. That is probably more important this season than most others.

Howevah, we do need to secure enough quality first team player to make CL qualification a reality and often that may require us to spend a pound or two. Last season we sold Aiden to balance the books and we have moved on a few players already this season which helps to reduce the wages bill.

For me, we wont go anywhere, even in the EL, unless we strengthen the centre half positions. If we can stop folks from scoring against us we can get a draw, even if we don’t play particularly good elsewhere on the pitch. If we continue to lose soft and stupid goals, we make our own life very tough indeed at European level.

How do we strengthen when we maybe need to tighten the belts, Im not sure, but if we can do it successfully we may be able to secure 15 million quid of income.

Btw. Mark Hately says the guys who painted the sign above our local corner shop did not do a very good job. In Marks opinion, it just wasn’t good enough. It was a painted title.

  11. I tried to post this on RTC and it is now forever stuck in their moderating black hole. Why? All I was trying to do was be reasonable….as is required on there….like no use of the ‘f’ word on here. Not even the use of their equivalent i.e. the word ‘hun’.

Seems like it’s getting harder to criticise the monsters, even on the venerable RTC site. Such is life in the internet jungle.

Never mind that I am a Celtic supporter.

One club, and one club alone, mugged the ENTIRE Scottish football game. One club, and one club alone, bent the entire sporting aspect of the game like Uri Geller on steroids. One club, and one club alone, subverted the refereeing of game after game (sooner or later, the evidence of this will get a full airing. It was only hinted at,referred to,in Mark Daly’s documentary). One club, and one club alone, conned the public purse out of milions and millions.

And what do we get now, from the erstwhile ‘fans’ of said club? An endless diatribe of unremitting threats, remorseless bigotry and hatred. No matter how the olive branch is proffered to them,so that the game in Scotland can move on and move forward, they show absolutely no sign of humility, contrition,or a desire to achieve redemption after disgrace. That,in itself,is another layer of shamelessness and further sullies what looks like an irredeemable position.

So,as things stand,it looks like Sevco5088 will not even be able to play at all in the lowest division of the SFL,and instead of trying to mend fences, build bridges,’they’ seem to want to operate a scorched earth policy and invite even more opprobrium.

Why would any sane adult behave like that? The answer may be obvious to some, but even after six decades on this,at times bewildering, planet, I just don’t understand it. It seems their permanent default setting is : angry, angry, angry.

    Celtic’s first choice midfield:

Brown and Kayal will play when fit.

I’d augment them with Wanyama and Commons with Ledley and Forrest respectively close second-bests.

Domestically I’d aver that Celtic will regularly play 3-5-2, or 4-5-1 in Europe, under which guise Forrest is likely to start in the league and Ledley in Europe. Expect to see regular rotation of midfield places.

  18. I don’t think that this Sevco lot are gonna have a team organised and ready to play in Div3 this season, infact i believe that BDO will take it all off Mr Green. The EBT footballing penalties aligned to the FTT decision will finish them off altogether imo. What i think wil thenl happen is that McColl of Clydeports and Parks of Hamilton will buy St.Mirren or Kilmarnock, rename them and be back in the SPL next season playing at Ipox. It is therefore incumbent upon all the clubs with integrity, around 90%, to get rid of the Ogilvies, Doncasters ,Dowlings and Regans from the SFA and totally reform the refereeing system etc etc before the hun reappears so that their nefarious nepotism is negated for the future.

Do you think this protest will be trouble free ? There’s supposed to be a Republican protest at the City Chambers @ George Square at 12:30 for IRA pow’s to be released from Ulster jails, I think this is not a good idea as it could end in midday madness and of course the bears would be blamed for causing the trouble as per usual

    Q. If a company is liquidated and they want to use the same name are they allowed to do this ?

    A. You can’t have two companies with the same name, although if one company is dissolved (or changes its name) and provided that no one (e.g. liquidators, creditors, etc.) objects you can then use whatever name you feel like. If someone objects then there are guidelines on what a suitably different name might be, i.e. probably doesn’t include the word “Rangers”. I assume you are talking about Rangers. Trading standards could stop you making false claims (such as “since 1872”) either because they just fancy it, or because of a complaint or objection from a member of the public.

I find it strange that a company that owes millions are allowed to keep same name.

  24. Scottish football and it’s media mouthpieces are still issuing mixed messages.

On the one hand, we have Sevco ensconced in SFL3, complete with fixture list and TV dates.

On the other hand, we are led to believe that negotiations are ongoing to decide whether they get a licence to play anywhere, or not.

Also, these negotiations appear to be narrowed down to the application for a transfer of licence, as they wouldn’t meet the criteria for a new licence.

As a transfer hinges on oldco’s accounts, it seems to me that they wouldn’t meet that criteria either, as the old accounts are, a) non existent, or b) iffy.

Therefore, to indulge in this sham is equally as corrupt as any of the previous chicanery.

One more wee shove and they are gone.

We have already absorbed the concept of “Armageddon”, so what will be, financially, will be.

I guess, what it is all about now is having them lurking in the nether regions of the game, to be exhumed after the untimely rush for reconstruction.

  25. I’m hacked off we haven’t invested in a new centre back yet, if it’s all about preparing for this CL qualifier what happens if Rogne,Mulgrew,Wilson or Wanyama gets injured. Not very wise imho.
