Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

No mate, I genuinely prefer him to Wilson or Mulgrew at Centre Half and until we sign someone better I’d keep him at the back with Rogne

  2. Warm Spring Afternoon in South Bucks…

European Football on the horizon, there seems to be a few match fit in-form sides awaiting – avioding the Norwegians would begood, still lots of tricky away fixtures which is not exactly our Forte.

No reason we can’tge through though.

BTW Mark Hately said RFCia getting pulled over the coals for going to the Civil Court was like a new Sioning.

  3. More insane views from the darkside:

Collectively we’ve all taken a kicking, we’ve been battered like wannae Jamie Oliver’s mince pies, and its no fair so its no. The club we love has been beaten to within an inch of its life, degraded, humiliated, whipped like a sex tourist in a Thai whorehouse. We’ve lost money, players, our position in the league, our pride, our dignity, our trophy room bicycle ( I know they goat the wee bell back, but that’s no important) and face even more punishments from the ohh so impartial Septic Football Association.

But let me tell you why I’d rather be where we are right now, than where you’re average mhank fan is.

We’ve hit the bottom, rock bottom, there’s no further for us to go, we’re like the smelliest pariahs amongst the lowest jakies and even they don’t want to share their meths wae us. For the next 3 years we as Rangers fans are going to be waking up, going to games with an air of anticipation and excitement, as we travel to crack infested Peterhead and loyalist strongholds like Stranraer, whilst the Tims go tae middens like Milan and Madrid. I know I would rather be going to East Stirling on a wet Wednesday night. We’ve got the SPL in our targets, thats our goal, thats what we’ll be living for during the next 3 seasons. We’ll be watching that title deciding game knowing that we’re one step closer to our goal. Once you hit bottom the only direction is up, especially if its like a crocodile infested moat below you, as every year our team is going to improve, every year the performances will need to be that bit better than the last, every year it will be a different league and a different set of teams. Every day will be like the 12th. I would rather be the organ than the monkey. Can Septic fans claim such a future? Let them eat their steak and we’ll season our spam.

    No.

They will be waking up going to their title decider in November, will still celebrate it but in their heart of hearts they’ll know its s***. After that then what, show up every week to see their team play teams off the park, scoring hundreds of goals, each week until the inevitable end and trophy presentation. But it will all be an anti-climax. Nothing like winning the Third Division. With the financial fallout caused by our dropping to division 3, Septic will need to cut their cloth to measure, gate reciepts, tv deal and a fairer distrabution of wealth will see that. So every season their team will be getting that bit worse because of budget and wage cuts. That’s what they have to look forward to for the next 3 seasons, dull stagnant football in a joke of a league, not like ours, with us in it…we might even see a break away by the other big SPL clubs to join us in the lower league…mark my words…this could…nae, it WILL happen.

I wouldn’t swap places with the mhanks if I could, because the next 3 years are going to be brilliant. And I wouldn’t put it past us winning the SPL in our first season up either and then the Champions League and then…world domination! Heir Hitler! Mein Fuhrer!

They’ve thrown down the gauntlet and it might be too heavy to lift…but we accept the challenge even if we slip a disc and put out back oot…but then we could claim incapacity benefit…

    We are the little people.

  4. Mark Hateley says that going to Forfar next season is “a bridie too far!” This was promptly refuted by Ally McCoist and John Brown who issued a joint statement through their PR agency, Traynor Jackson associates which read: “We wull bye(sic) the pies! We don’t do walking away when it cums to such seeryuss matters!”

Then he’ll probably play, which also worries me.

I just think that since we knew that Majstorovic,Loovens and O’Dea were leaving and have pretty much known that since january, then as ever we’re leaving ourselves a wee bit short in the eventuality of injuries. We are supposed to be acquiring another 1, maybe 2 centre backs so why not bring one in early would be my thinking.

  8. The Battered Bunnet

watched a replay of the Aalen game

Wilson and Charlie had a clash of heads

would be just our luck to lose the both of them in the one go

    no matter, both recovered well

and in fact Kelvin had a good game

as did Beram and Broony bossed the 2nd half

    other team got tired

Dylan and Paddy exploited the gaps

and a sweet goal by Stokes deploying

a 3rd-man run with young James Forrest

Broony did get an unnecessary caution

a reminder that he must keep his discipline cos

when he does so, he can be a huge player for us

  16. Ally McCoist has said of next season: “The Third Division will be like Pastie Nirvana…it will be like the Champions League of Scotch pies…mark my words: it’s the pies I’m looking forward to the most…make no bones about it, those Berwick Bridies are truly exceptional…and I know my savoury delights very well indeed…I especially loved the old Devil on horseback…but now every time I see one I have this terrible vision of Craig Whytes eyes.”

Cheers. With the Fojut transfer cancelled, I expect a replacement, but I;d rather have a 30 goal striker and go with what we have at the back.

Noticed a few folk advocating 3 at the back lately, but with Matthews and Izzy, we have the best full back pair I can recall in a long time.

Scrub that. Ever. I don’t remember Craig and Gemmill, and Danny never had a decent opposite number in 20 years at Celtic.

  28. I can not for the life of me understand why the huns have not come over to Italy for pre-season, as they have in the past when they were(allegedly) a football club! The savoury delights over here are truly mouth-watering!O
