Champions League income needed for Champions League budget

1182

I suspect we have not seen the best of Daryl Murphy, who has proven to be a solid Championship and fleeting Premier League player in England but has been unable to retain a place in the SPL, but his hamstring injury, suffered after the long flight to Pennsylvania, will be a blow on two levels for Celtic.  They are denied a squad player for the crucial Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs and are likely to unable to loan him out, easing more pressure from payroll.

Daryl was singled out for credit (here) for the way he changed the shape of Celtic in our opening league game of the season against Aberdeen.  He would have been useful to Neil Lennon this coming week.

News that Helsingborgs have lost their top striker is welcome but is not quite ‘like signing a new player’ for Celtic.  Let’s hope they haven’t lost their Kenny Miller only to find their Jordan Rhodes.

There can seldom have been more financially important games to the club than the Helsingborgs tie.  Celtic accounts are usually released mid-August (16th last year) but I don’t anticipate any rush to publish this year.  Last season’s accounts could well see the largest loss in our history as the club chased their first league win in four years (insert standard lecture on financial responsibility program, avoid urge to run legacy Sir David Murray malware).

I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).  Football finance lessons are clear, if you have a Champions League budget you need Champions League income.  Time for this team to step up to the challenge.  Get along and pack the place out on the 29th.

No regrets this time.

Bed early tonight if you are off to Dingwall in the morning. I hope we see a few of the young lads.

    Thanks again for your consideration.

My early years were full of stories about WW11.

My family used to speak about the horror of Katyn.

My comments yesterday were simply in response to your opinion of Australia,it`s past and current day attitudes.

Believe me,my fellow Tim,this country,Australia, strives very hard to care for it`s citizens.

Irrespective of their colour or ethnicity.

The past is immutable, and Australia unquestionably, has it`s fair share of skeletons, but be certain, every effort is made ,at the highest levels to ensure a “fair go.”

    ie: equality for all.

Last year,my son went to Auschwitz as part of his history course.

Incidentally, his comments on return, typical of his age group, were that the best looking women on his travels through Europe were Polish.

    Some education.

    Kind regards.

    Hail Hail

That’s the bit I disagree with.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to say. (thumbsup)

  3. Paul67,

I’m very pro-board and waiting until we get into the Champions League before we spend money on players. However, I don’t understand how we could make a major loss last year. This was something you hinted to at the end of the transfer window last summer. In January 2011 our debt figure was 9M. This was reduced to 0.5M in August 2011 and the figure in January 2012 was 7M (2M less than the same period the year before).

In addition, we had group stages Europa League last year which we didn’t have the year before. We didn’t really spend any money on the purchase of players as Bangura (2.2M) and Wanyama (0.9M) was offset by Maloney (1M) and Hooiveld (1.5M).

What am I missing…..I should have paid more attention in accounting class!!

I watched New Zealand get beaten by New Caledonia (a place I’d never even heard of) back in June. Chris Killen and no-one else in that New Zealand team looked very good.

Theer was something of teh Henrik Larsson about New Caledonia’s first scorer Bertrand Kai, it may have been the dreadlocks.

  7. I think Championship clubs can sign players outwith the window, hopefully Murphy can get fit and move out.As bad a “striker” i’ve seen for Celtic, woth the scoring record of a centre half.

  8. Snake Plissken on

We were very fortunate at Celtic in the 90s in one regard – we had three of the finest midfielders Scotland produced in a long long time plyaing for us but not always at the same time.

Apart from Paul McStay who was the greatest Celtic player of his generation and greatest Scottish player who was hurt by years of poor investment, mis-management being dragged down by carrying all our expectations on his shoulders against a financially doped up opponent, we had John Collins who won us many matches and was the best technical midfielder in terms of technique and commitment to improving his technique I’ve seen. We could do with him or someone of his ability in the Celtic team now. Not just for the great free kicks and brilliant goals but for his awareness and his ability to pull something out of the bag like Naka did so many times when we needed it.

And of course we had the World class Paul Lambert who Zico no less claimed after the opening game of World Cup 98 was the only player in the opposition who could have played for Brazil. What an accolade!

We have been very blessed with midfielders down the years who are cultured, classy and overall blessed with extraordinary football intelligence.

Both McStay and Collins deserved more from their careers but the love we all have for Paul McStay is there simply because he stayed with Celtic through the dark times and was our beacon of hope. He could have strutted his stuff anywhere on the planet at any team and had the accolades foisted upon no marks like Gary McAllister but he stayed with Celtic because he loved Celtic as we do. He will always be the celt I most admire because lesser men would have gone for the money or the fame and fortune or the easy way out.

That he didn’t when he could have and many would say should have says it all.

  10. Anyone think that Man Utd are taking a huge gamble in signing RVP,

if the wages reported are correct the its costing them about £75 million

greenmaestro – It wasn’t too long ago the New Caledonians were mad keen on the old cannibalism. Sort of like Airdrie, but with nicer weather.

Chris Killen was probably worried that his carthorse-like turn of pace wouldn’t be enough to get him out of there if they felt especially peckish. (thumbsup)

Lower league sides do not have to adhere to the transfer window.

Murphy might be off to Ipswich again before long but I’m not wishing the guy out the door. He has heart which some other forwards at the club should take note of.

Daily Mail ran it last night and then pulled it. We have supposed to have been in for him to take on loan but he is on £50/60000 a week and we were struggling to come to a deal.

  18. So the MSM have widely publicised the orcs ‘record’ re 4th Division attendance.

    Well, how about this record:

When Celtic played Aberdeen on the opening game of the season, we became the World Record holders for consecutive years playing in the top division*, competing in every top level season since 1890/91.

*shared with two or three other sides who, until quite recently could not be relegated due to the restrictive size of their league system.

  20. I saw the Zigic story and cannot see anything coming of it, even if he had to half his reported current wages I don’t think he would be worth it. I also see there are rumours linking us with Goodwillie from Blackburn, however think his off-the-field antics would be enough to scupper any deal and I don’t think he would cope in the Glasgow goldfish bowl.

And as this post from KDS shows, the DR haven’t bothered to do much research into the issue:

“Football league 2 play off final in 2007 had over 60000 at wembley between Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury. That’s 4th tier. The 2009 final had over 50000 between Gillingham and Shrewsbury.

It’s good to see the DR is keeping up it’s tradition of dingying research.

So what they are aiming for is a Scottish record for an attendance at a 4th tier football ground.”
